  • "Firstly this is a working Dairy farm and fairy remote so there are farmyard smells and noises, no internet and poor phone signal but we could get one."

No problem for us but should be mentioned That said the farm noises were not a problem for us and hardly noticeable. The cottage is very comfortable, especially the large bed and everything in it is finished to a high standard and plenty of room. The photos don't do justice to the quality of the interior. The owners are lovely and friendly and very welcoming. We couldn't get over how Dog friendly the area is, it is very central for the Malverns, Bromley Downs, Herefordshire and some lovely and interesting market towns. Ludlow was a favourite. All in all a lovely cottage, in a great location, well equipped and excellent quality and value. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at Elephant Cottage. It's lovely to hear how much you enjoyed staying, it's in a wonderful spot and you have so many lovely walks from your door. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

  • "The story behind the cottage and the renovation was very interesting."

Margaret has obviously put a lot of thought and effort into making this historical cottage into a home from home. I love all the little details, such as latched wooden doors and bespoke soft furnishings throughout the property. The kitchen was well equipped with a good-sized fridge and freezer. Quite often we find that rental properties may be well equipped, but there is littles space for you to put your own provisions. This was not the case with Elephant Cottage. In addition to being well equipped, there was a large cupboard and pantry with plenty of storage. The provision of a downstairs cloakroom was also a thoughtful facility. The upstairs is quirky but well designed. The super king-sized bed was super comfortable, and the shower was always warm and powerful. As described in the cottage details, Elephant Cottage is situated at the entrance to a busy commercial dairy farm. Peter, his son and granddaughter were more than happy to show us round the farm and answer any questions we had. We had a wander round the farm on several days, including seeing a calf which was only a few minutes old, but we didn't find enough time to go fishing on the lake - maybe next time. The farm is only a few miles from the nearest town, Bromyard, which had everything we needed. From the fantastic Legges farm shop, a large Co-Op, and many independent shops in the town centre, including bakeries and butchers, hardware, and craft shops, as well as cafes, restaurants and pubs. We ate out in Bromyard a few times – Foxy’s Steak Bar (brilliant steaks- went twice it was so good), Cosy Cafe (fantastic breakfast), and Mahis (Indian restaurant). During our stay we visited the Brockhampton Estate (National Trust) which was beautiful and very interesting. All of the staff/volunteers were very knowledgeable and friendly. All in all, a lovely relaxing holiday in a quirky, but beautiful little cottage - Thanks Margaret and Peter – hopefully we will be back soon.

Wow it sounds like you had a fabulous stay at Elephant Cottage. It's so lovely to hear such wonderful comments about the property and we would love to welcome you back again very soon. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was to a high standard and the owner was very welcoming."

The note to the property details that it is ‘next to a working farm’ had not conveyed to us what we experienced even though we live in the countryside and are surrounded by dairy farms and are used to grass silage making. However the cottage is adjoining an extensive range of buildings that seemed to house a very large herd of dairy cows 24/7 (i.e. did not go out to the fields) and we were woken as early 4.15am by the noise of machinery moving around the yards and by the banging of metal on metal. A noise of a motor (condenser fan motor?) that was running 24/7 was clearly audible within the cottage even with the windows closed. The movement of tractors towing silage trailers on a roadway about 15 metres from the side of the cottage with the front door and kitchen and bedroom windows from around midday to after midnight for three nights of our stay was very, very intrusive. A second note to the property details which states ‘very limited wifi outside’ should be corrected. There is no wifi provided by the owner and it is the mobile telephone signal that is very limited outside.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry that you were disturbed by the workings of the farm. The description does state that the cottage is "Set in the grounds of the owner's working farm". Silage making is a specific activity which will only take place over a short period of time. It is a shame this coincided with your stay. We will check the WiFi coverage with the owner. We hope you were able to enjoy exploring the local area. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage and surrounding."

Cosy and well equipped. A log burner instead of fake electric one would have made it prefect (plenty of wood around!

Thank you for your kind comments. Elephant Cottage is a listed building and has no chimney. When the conversion took place, planning regulations dictated that the blind side of the property had to replicate the original barn doors. Therefore, behind the fake fireplace, on the outside wall, are vertical wooden planks, representing the original barn doors. We made the decision to create a focal point using genuine oak beams, later adding the electric fire effect stove for glow and romance. Property Owner

  • "We had a fantastic time."

The only thing we would point out to future holiday makers is that they should not expect peace and quiet all the time because it is a very busy dairy farm with lots of comings and goings and heavy machinery and lorries. This didn't bother us in the slightest but we'd hate for someone to go and not realise and then leave a negative review as that wouldn't be fair because Elephant Cottage is so lovely. The fishing was good there and nice to be able to amble around the farm fields freely. The hosts are absolutely lovely. We had a wonderful farm tour which was a lovely touch and enhanced our stay. Elephant Cottage is super cosy and beautifully finished. We loved our stay very much! Great area - lots to see and plenty of walks with great dog friendly places to eat.

  • "It's a lovely comfy cottage, away from the hurly burly of modern day life."

The bed was very comfortable, and the cottage was well supplied with 'pandemic' cleaning materials. Things which should be noted, although none of them spoiled our stay, are: 1. the cottage is on a working farm - expect clanks; a strong light at night on the cow sheds; the sound of milk tankers, and mooing cows; 2. there is no mobile signal or WiFi in the cottage; and 3. the cottage is alongside a main, albeit rural, road. All that said, we had a lovely relaxing week - lazy days and good sleep at night. Personally, we would recommend Elephant Cottage.

The cottage was very clean, comfortable and well appointed. Mr and Mrs Lewis were very welcoming, and gave us some hints and tips about the local area and where to visit. My husband enjoyed the fishing in the pools and even managed to catch something!! Our little dog enjoyed the enclosed garden and the freedom of running in the fields. The weather was not very kind to us, but it did not detract from a really enjoyable stay. The only disappointment was when I booked I misjudged the dates by 1 day, and when I called Skyes to change it I was charged an extra administration fee of £30, despite there being no difference in price which I feel was unfair.

Thank you to Peter and Margaret for their friendly and warm welcome. This is a great location to explore the wonderful countryside and towns. We found plenty to do in the area, which include a visit to Brockhampton Estate and walks in the Bromyard Downs. There are two little fishing ponds but we would advise heading to the bottom one. There are plenty of baby common carp to catch and in a few years when they've gained weight they'll provide good sport!

  • "We had a very relaxing couple of days."

Everything we needed to cook and enjoy ourselves was provided. We were able to get out to a really scenic area near the Welsh border without too much difficulty. The nearest town Bromyard is a mid-sized town with a big Co-op supermarket and more specialist shops shops as well, e.g. the food shop Legges. There is also plenty to see nearby in terms of National Trust / other heritage places. The only small things that might put some people off (although not us!) were (i) the large number of cows, that you could hear from the cottage, (ii) creakiness of the floor / doors, (iii) size the of TV (rather small). Overall, the property has been refurbished to a very high standard, and there are a lot of nice touches, such as the elephant themed bed covers. :)

  • "We have just spent a week here and were sad to leave."

The cottage looks small but it's a little tardis inside. It was wonderfully warm and snug, very good quality furniture and fittings, a massive bed, lovely hot shower and everything you could need is supplied. The attention to detail is amazing and the television is perfect for the size of the room. We collected our key and were sent off with a beautiful jug of home made soup as well. A bonus too is the escape proof garden so we could let the dog out and not worry that she would end up helping with the milking. You are close to the farm but we only occasionally heard the cows and it was never a problem. In fact we found the lowing really relaxing, Margaret and Peter invite you to go anywhere on the farm so we saw the milking and the calves in with mum. It was lovely and we will definitely be going back in the future.

The property

Quaint, idyllic and in the middle in a beautiful location within the heart of Herefordshire, Elephant Cottage is set within the grounds of the owner’s dairy farm which was once owned by a Birmingham circus family, who relocated from the city to retire with their animals.

It was here that a baby elephant was housed in this old barn building until it moved away.

Hence the name!

Today, the beautiful old barn has a mix of both new and more rustic features; the old beams and trusses remain, with a section of original wattle and daub inside.

Light and airy due to the high beam ceilings and multiple windows that look over the surrounding farm lands, Elephant Cottage has one bed room on the first floor which holds a superking size double room, along with a shower room and WC.

The kitchen area is kitted out with all the mod-cons you could ever need, with the dining/living room hosting an open fire.

Outside, there is a large, private garden area a mere 200 metres away from a small lake.

Nearby there are opportunities to walk in all directions, with a pub and shop within three miles away from the property. Elephant Cottage is a great place for couples to come and relax for a long weekend or week-long holiday, where you can explore the countryside of Herefordshire.
