  • "My friend and I plus my 2 dogs spent Christmas at Woodlands cottage."

I wouldn’t normally stay in a cottage attached to the owner’s house but I want to thank Jane for being so welcoming , to the point where my friend felt comfortable enough to ask for some flour she’d needed and I felt comfortable walking my dogs around the beautiful grounds. My friend is a chef and she was impressed with the kitchen quality. I found the bed very comfortable which is important. Very handy to have 2 sofas and 2 bathrooms. The weather was atrocious but we hunkered down. We did think the wood burner was real and were a little disappointed to find it was electric, but that was our mistake. The WiFi isn’t great but my friend was able to make zoom calls so it was adequate. Spotlessly clean , a bit draughty and cold but it was December in the middle of a 3 day storm ! The garden was enclosed and safe for the dogs which was very important . An enjoyable stay .

The cottage was clean and comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. Jane and Brian were very friendly and helpful. The cake and milk on arrival was a lovely touch. Jane cooked us a lovely meal midweek which is highly recommended. There is a lovely secure garden which the dogs enjoyed. The Kings Head pub serves lovely meals and is very friend!y and only minutes from the cottage. Already looking forward to going back.

It is in a beautiful setting, that's quiet with lovely grounds. The garden is nicely secluded and adorned with roses and most smell divine. Inside, the cottage is well equipped and very comfortable with all you need for a restful stay. Jane, the owner, is welcoming and charming. My only criticism is with the WiFi. For ordinary surfing it is fine but the upload speeds are pitiful. Having said that, it wouldn't put me off returning another day.

We had one minor property issue on the Sunday (which did not need immediate attention) - but a tradesman came that day and resolved the issue very quickly (impressive for a Sunday the day prior to a Bank Holiday) No complaints at all, and we would happily stay there again.

  • "We loved the cottage and had a very cosy time there."

The owners were very nice and helpful, the kitchen was really well stocked. We really appreciated the Christmas decorations and the gorgeous treats left as gifts. The only minor inconvenience was that you need to walk through the second bedroom to get to the bathroom, which is tricky in the middle of the night! But all in all we were very happy there.

I'm so glad you had a happy Christmas at Woodlands Cottage, and thank you for such positive feedback. For the benefit of any future guests reading this comment, I'd like to add that there are two bathrooms in Woodlands - a large family bathroom, independent of the bedrooms, and a small en-suite off the twin room. It sounds as though you didn't open the door to the main bathroom - which is a great shame! Best wishes Jane Property Owner

We were made to feel very welcome with our dog and encouraged to walk in the owner’s adjacent gardens and our daughter loved the huge trampoline. The cottage itself is warm and cosy and an ideal base from which to explore the area. The kitchen is huge and a great place to cook and congregate in. The furniture and beds were uncomfortable. The stairs were very steep. In summary the cottage was tired and in need of complete overhaul, and redecoration. On the plus side the gardens, and surrounding area were very good. Finally it would have been nice if someone had come to see us diring our stay, and we could have discussed these problems in more detail.

Sorry to hear your complaints - I don't agree with the points you make, but of course you're entitled to your opinion. Our cleaners are conscientious and experienced, and we trust them implicitly. We didn't come and say hello because we were in Sicily. However, our housekeeper came to say hello on your arrival, and any complaints you had subsequently could have been made to her. Jane Viner Property Owner

Amazing views, with a beautiful cottage set in some stunning grounds. Nestled in the countryside, it made a great base for days out to Ludlow, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye amongst others. The nearby Kings Head Pub is walking distance, and definitely worth at least one visit. The owners were welcoming and friendly, and the property itself was to a high clean standard. The kitchen was our main focus, and with a big range oven, was so much fun to cook and relax in, and watch the world and the wildlife go by. We cannot recommend this cottage enough, and will be looking forward to our next visit.

Thank you so much, and we’re absolutely delighted you enjoyed Woodlands Cottage so much, as well as the gardens, and all the county has to offer. You were lovely guests, and we look forward to welcoming you back before too long. Property Owner

  • "I am sorry to say we were quite disappointed with the Property."

It is in need of some attention to sort out various defects (e.g. towel rails hanging off the walls) and was not very comfortable. The dark settee was especially uncomfortable. However the main issue was that it was generally not very clean (e.g. the microwave, fridge, kitchen table were all dirty and there were piles (x4) of Dog mess in the garden). We saw the Owner on the second day and mentioned our concerns. We were told they had just engaged a new cleaning company, so clearly there are some teething issues. Generally it is in need of a good clean and some TLC.

It's so disappointing to read this, and while we regret this customer's feelings about his stay in Woodlands Cottage, we don't think it's a fair or balanced review. We're proud of Woodlands Cottage, and work hard to make people feel as comfortable and welcome as possible. Please don't be put off! Jane and Brian Property Owner

  • "Having stayed in several cottages (one previous with Sykes with the same star rating which was superb) we were disappointed with Woodlands Cottage."

The cottage was in need of some TLC and redecorating throughout. Basic items like the fridge/freezer, cooker and microwave were not in the best of condition and not too clean. The beds were also rather uncomfortable. During our stay we did not see anything of the owners which was strange as in every other cottage we have stayed the owner’s have always come and said hello and asked if everything was to our liking. It’s such a shame that our stay in a very beautiful part of the country was let down by our accommodation.

I'm so sorry you felt let down by Woodlands Cottage. Your holiday coincided with our own - we were in America, at our son's wedding celebration, from April 26 until May 11, but I can assure you that if we'd been at home, we would certainly have come to say hello. I've noted your points, and while your views are fortunately not shared by most of our guests, I shall certainly take them very seriously. Best wishes Jane Property Owner

  • "The cottage was really lovely, as soon as we stepped inside I was really impressed by the kitchen."

It had everything holiday makers could want and was really quirky too. The lounge was very spacious for the two of us, a settee each and upstairs we could choose from the double or twin room. The shower room suited us as we don't have a bath at home . The only thing I would have preferred was carpet in the lounge and twin bedroom as that would have been cosier in my opinion. The location in the grounds of the Manor House with Country views is amazing and very quiet and although it is attached to the Manor House you aren't aware of having neighbours.

The cottage is attached to the owners house which we would normally not entertain however I’m glad that we “took the risk” as in no way did we ever feel uncomfortable with this. • "The listing was inaccurate, it states that the double bedroom has an ensuite, with an additional family bathroom with walk in shower."

In reality, the twin room has the ensuite, and there is no walk in shower in the family bathroom. Because the whole family likes to have showers, we all had to use the children's ensuite, which was inconvenient overall the standard of accommodation was good, the setting was lovely and the owner Jane was very helpful when we pointed out some problems we were having including getting a new dishwasher fitted immediately! The following are some minor problems:- we had a problem with the dishwasher but as I have noted already Jane dealt with this as soon as we raised it. there were no instructions for the washer / dryer and it was difficult to work out how to work it - Jane did print out some instructions she found on the internet for us in double room, one side of bed did not have bedside lamp (because to do so would have blocked of access to cupboard) - this meant that only one of us could have the bedside lamp on to read The maximum temperature on the shower could have been a bit higher the main issue for us was the inaccurate listing, it is unlikely we would have booked the cottage, if we knew the reality of the bathroom situation - we made Jane aware of the inaccurate listing

About the location

DOCKLOW

Leominster 5.5 miles; Bromyard 6.5 miles; Hereford 17 miles.

The tiny hamlet of Docklow is surrounded by rolling Herefordshire countryside, and there are some traditional inns within a short drive, which offer a warm welcome and excellent food. Docklow is ideally placed for exploring everything this peaceful county has to offer, as well as – a little further afield - the delights of neighbouring Shropshire, Worcestershire and The Cotswolds. The area has many lovely walks, including the long-distance Three Choirs Way and Offa’s Dyke, and there are also cycle trails, horse riding and fishing all available nearby. A short drive from Docklow is the historic town of Leominster, with the lovely Priory church, half-timbered architecture, many antique shops and a variety of other independent shops and cafés. A little further away is the cathedral city of Hereford, where the majestic cathedral itself is home to the fascinating Mappa Mundi, and Chained Library. Hereford dates to Saxon times, and its position in the Welsh Marches made it the site of many a skirmish over the centuries. Surrounded by the hills beyond, and with its medieval bridge over the lazy, winding River Wye, it is the very image of picturesque England.
