  • "Great location, everything you need at this homely historical cottage."

Our 2nd time, Bliss Hill, Maws, Tile Factory and Severn Valley railway were brilliant. Shakespeare Inn just across the road, just the job. See you on our next trip.

Thank you so much ❤️ see you next time. Amanda x Property Owner

  • "Arrived on a Friday afternoon in September lovely and warm outside walked in cottage and the cold and damp just hit us,we went into kitchen an awful smell of drains opened cupboards and the smell of damp just hit us,we got 2 plates 2 dishes and 2 mugs that is all we used ."

The sink was blocked and we had to plunge with dishcloth to get water down. The lounge walls had damp patches all over them.at one stage the wall above the fire place was actually running with water. the window didn’t have a latch . Don’t be fooled by pics on site as the patio furniture was nothing like in picture it was a plastic chairs settee and little table full of green mold with cushions that had seen better days. Going up stairs the first thing is the door on landing going into hairdressing salon no security our side it felt like anybody could walk through it at any time and if you are in the bathroom it is opposite first feeling of insecurity Then the bedroom yes the bed was comfy but again a door leading into the neighbours again no security our side so felt very vulnerable and really felt nothing of value could be left.also the neighbours talking was like they were in the room with us. Again the window had no latch on it. The bathroom being the same steel windows and a screw screwed into the sill that held the window open or closed.then the bathroom plug got blocked … We had brought a passport for all the museums before we went so we did all of these and stayed out as long as possible the pubs ,cafe etc nearby are great.by Wednesday we were both Ill with colds and bad chests so yes we did leave early would never recommend this property it’s the worst holiday we have had since booking with Sykes in the last 15 years plus and normally we have at least 4 per year. This property needs a bit of tlc .and a true marketing picture. There is no allocated parking it is a free for all opposite with the pub backing onto the wall along it so if the pub/ hotel, people walking etc is really busy you have to find else where. Never did find the car park that the vendor said there was as the other parking in area is pay on exit so could prove expensive. We asked questions before we went but didn’t get much of a response from the vendor.

Thank you very much for this negative feedback. I’m so grateful that you are the minority. Which is clearly reflected in my reviews. Regards Amanda. Property Owner

The only negative is we had to bring our own quilt as I have an allergy to feathers down which is quite a common allergy for asthmatics. Maybe yiu could leave a synthetic quilt in the cupboard? This could also be used a lighter quilt in the summer months. Otherwise it is a lovely cottage beautifully presented

Having read some of the earlier reviews, l would think we stayed in a different place! Clean and tidy, no mould anywhere, paintwork and flooring perfect. Yes the stairs are narrow and steep but that’s what you get in a cottage. Enjoyed sitting in the courtyard feeding the ducks. Coalport is great and we would happily stay here again.

Very comfortable bed and sofa. Kitchen bright with good items. A little more cutlery please. I feel that there should be a much stronger warning about the steep, narrow and twisting stairs. The website should also state that there is no mobile phone signal at all. Thank heavens the Wi Fi was good. The cottage is in a idyllic setting.

The surrounding area is excellent . The cottage was ideal for a couple , with a good outside space to enjoy the weather and the friendly ducks . The pub across the road served great food and we also enjoyed the beer garden at the pub just over the footbridge across the river . We thought that the bed was a bit soft and the pillows needed replacing but otherwise everything was great and we had a very enjoyable stay .

  • "The cottage itself is beautiful and in a lovely location."

We found the bed and the sofa uncomfortable, probably due to the uneven floors. In an old property the floors can of course be uneven but a large modular sofa did not help. The breakfast bar style eating arrangement is also not ideal as the table wobbles. My husband became unwell and could not get comfy and due to this lack of comfort we left early. I mention his illness simply as it illustrates the comfort issue. There was mould around the shower tiles. The kitchen sink has a drainage issue causing unpleasant smells. A shame as it's a lovely picturesque place and otherwise we very much enjoyed our stay. We loved the location, the easy access to a number of restaurants and pubs, watching the damsel flies flitting over the canal, feeding the ducks, and exploring the locality with its fascinating history in general.

  • "We loved the cottage and its location, and would recommend anyone looking for a total chill out to book it!"

In general all was well. but we felt the cleanliness (specifically in the kitchen area) could be improved, on arrival, we had to wash all cutlery and crockery... as when first tried to use found them to be "Unclean". We don't feel this was the fault of the owners, but it is their responsibility to ensure all is well before the next batch of guests arrive. All other areas, although basic were good.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Canal Cottage."

The location was just spot on. I feel it was a bit light on crockery, just one glass tumbler? We didn't like the two locked interior doors upstairs, one in the bedroom and one at the top of the stairs opposite the bathroom where you could clearly hear all the conversation from the hair salon. These doors were locked from the other side, who has keys?. We would have felt more comfortable with sliding bolts on the accommodation side.

  • "This is not a criticism of the property itself."

Some of your Sykes properties are fully stocked for a stay with household items, for instance cleaning items and some other properties are, as on this occasion, short on these. This time we had to purchase toilet and kitchen rolls, disinfectant etc, whereas our last booking had plenty. I feel it would help if there could be some consistency across all rentals with a level of provision stipulated so all customers would be aware of what to expect.

Canal Cottage was everything we had hoped for and more. It was comfortable and well equipped. Being an old cottage it had low doorways so it was necessary to duck and sometimes I forgot. The Ironbridge Gorge is a very interesting area with plenty of walking opportunities and museums to visit. There are also some very good pubs and cafes. We visited the Shakespeare Inn opposite the cottage and the Half Moon Inn in Jackfield which was about 15 minutes walk away. We can recommend both.

The location was perfect, easy access to the pubs and great walks on either side of the canal. Was easy access to the local museums - can recommend the Coalport China museum, Bliss Hill Victorian town RAF Cosford museum, and Ironbridge of course. The cottage was warm and cosy, everything you needed in a small space. No good for anyone with mobility problems as the stairs are small and steep, as well as the steps leading down to the cottage, but lovely to stay in such an authentic cottage, with the canal right in front with the ducks and their chicks all waiting to be fed each morning. The bed was really comfortable and the bedding was great quality, the cottage was really clean and the bathroom modern with a great shower over the bath, and a great kitchen with everything needed. I would certainly recommend the cottage, no negatives - except take a bath sheet if you prefer a larger towel than a small bath towel.

There are steps leading down to the property, steps up to the door and steep narrow stairs within. That said, the place is lovely. It is nice and comfortable inside with just about everything you could need. The patio area outside is nice and although it is not enclosed it feels nice and private, although do be prepared for ducks coming up looking for food and people walking past asking where the Tar Tunnel is (next door). There are lots of things to do in the area, walks, museums to visit, pubs (The Woodbridge was the best we visited) and of course the historic town of Ironbrige is just a few minutes drive.
