  • "Garden Cottage is in a great location for many towns and villages around the Cotswolds with an abundance of pubs, tea shops, independent shops and walks."

There are also some interesting National Trust properties and Blenheim Palace a short drive away. The cottage provides everything you need in a lovely setting. I would however like to provide some additional feedback on a few things that I believe would offer a better experience and therefore rating. - Suitable sensor lighting along the gravel pathway to the cottage which is pitch black in the evening during the winter months would be very helpful. - Appropriate bathroom flooring rather than carpet would be more hygienic and provide a clean appearance. - Upgrade of towels and bath mats would make a big difference. The ones provided were well worn and one of the bath towels was barely bath size. - Bedding and pillows could also benefit from an upgrade. The pillows were incredibly heavy and hard and the addition of a top sheet under the duvet can detract from it’s comfort and purpose. If it’s purpose is to reduce laundry I would suggest this would not be appropriate practice for a holiday let. - a display stand of homemade goods to be purchased occupies valuable space where suitable seating would provide more comfort. - a few welcome commodities are always a lovely touch and make a difference. As long as these are packaged and sealed with the necessary content information, guests are able to take responsibility of specific dietary requirements. The above feedback is intended to be constructive and to enable an improved experience and in no way is a criticism of the property itself.

Thank you for all your constructive comments. Firstly, there is electric lighting along the entire length of the garden path which maybe now a little hidden by the Yew hedging, but activated by a switch on the wall ! New towels & bathmats now purchased. Pillows too upgraded. Yes ,the top sheet is to reduce duvet covers being washed to death, especially after a number of long & short stays. For your information no one else has complained in over 17years. Other guests love the availability to purchase homemade chutney , jelly & marmalade unique to Garden Cottage & many have purchased Bird In The Hand crafts to remind them of their time here. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Niki. Property Owner

  • "A small but perfectly formed cottage set in a mature garden with trees and wildlife."

It was clean and had everything that we needed for a short self catering holiday with enough utensils, crockery and cutlery to make preparing meals easy. The bed and pillows were comfortable and the bath towels large. The settee is a little small for 2 people to share comfortably but other than that, the owners ensured that we had a lovely, relaxing stay at Garden Cottage.

So glad that you enjoyed your stay & found everything to your liking. You certainly had excellent weather for walking The White Horse Hill and exploring Downton Abbey in our neighbouring village of Bampton. Property Owner

  • "Niki is a fabulous host, nothing is too much trouble, even providing us with a fan during last weeks hot weather."

The cottage may be small but is well thought out and designed. The setting is fantastic in a country setting within the owners large landscaped garden, it is not overlooked. From the settee you can watch a good variety of birds flying. The only adverse comment regarding the cottage is for anyone with mobility issues. The garage space is circa 35 metres from the cottage and it is not possible to get the car any closer. So as well as the walking, cases and all bags have to be carried as above. My mobility scooter would not work on the first area of gravel but did manage the gravel garden path. Niki used the wheelbarrow to get our luggage to the cottage. Overall the stay was worth the inconvenience. Thank you Niki

  • "Lovely little cottage set in a beautiful location."

Clean and had everything you could need. Kitchen well equipped, fridge small but enough for 2 people. hosts very friendly and helpful. Well placed for many attractions in this part of the Cotswolds, we visited several stunning gardens, Blenheim, Oxford and a few charming villages. The garden is huge and we loved watching the deer visit as well as the red kites which seem to be everywhere. My only small gripe is that the sofa isn’t really big enough for 2 to relax comfortably and the wicker armchair wasn’t overly comfortable. However it’s a lovely place and I would recommend.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at Garden Cottage. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. It's a great base to explore the Cotswolds and we would love to welcome you back again in the future. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

The cottage is even better than on the photo's. The house is small but big enough for 2. Everytthing you need for cooking is available. It is very tastefully decorated. The garden is beautiful. The owners are very nice. the only suggestion is to put 2 comfortable chairs on the terrace. In addition to the 2 nice looking, but not so comfortable iron chairs.

So glad that you enjoyed your stay, we do have more comfortable chairs so we will definitely make them available ! Property Owner

  • "All in all a very disappointing experience."

The cottage is well presented in a beautiful garden and Niki could not have been more welcoming. However our stay was extremely unpleasant due to a persistent insect infestation. It was apparent on the first night that there were a lot of spiders around the place. My partner has a phobia and it resulted in poor sleep for both of us, as I was woken up to catch around 20 of them on the first night. We also noticed wood lice appearing at night too. These were around the edge of the floors, but also on the kitchen worktop and hanging from the loft hatch in the bedroom ceiling. I’d pick off about 10 a day, hoping that would be an end to it. Ants were also a problem in the kitchen, with them crawling all over the surfaces and cupboards. There is no lid to the kitchen bin, which may possibly have attracted them. In hindsight we should have complained immediately, but each time we thought that we’d sorted it ourselves and that would be an end to it. We did report it to Niki after the 5th night though and gave her the opportunity to sort it out. She attempted to eradicate them during the day, but we returned to the property late in the evening to find the problem to be as bad as ever. We took the decision to cancel the holiday rather than endure another night and packed up and left the cottage around midnight. We thought the four hour drive home would be preferable to another night there. We left the 8 wood lice that were found in the bedroom in a glass, for Niki to see the extent of the problem from just one evening. We also offered photographic evidence of this. The owners showed no concern that we’d had to leave and a request for any refund was flatly refused. Sykes Cottages state in their terms and conditions that they are simply a go-between and have no responsibility for the accommodation and just referred us back to the owners. We did take out an insurance policy through Sykes, but this did not cover the property being uninhabitable.

"We are naturally concerned about your "extremely unpleasant stay", of which we were only made aware on your 5th day. Equally, receiving such a review is both upsetting and disconcerting. We have been running Garden Cottage as a holiday let for 16 years and yours is the first review we have had about a "persistent insect infestation". All this could have been avoided if you had informed Sykes that your partner has an insect phobia and asked if Garden Cottage, situated in a garden, would be an OK place to stay. Your view that the insects you found amounted to a "persistent insect infestation" clearly was not shared by the guests that proceeded you or those that followed. Knowing your partner's condition it was surely incumbent upon you to inform us straightaway so that we could jointly assess whether the problem could be addressed. You offered no photographic evidence. We would have liked to have seen a picture of the 20 spiders on the first night, given that there were none the night before. As for the ants we saw no evidence of them when we vacuumed the carpet. Leaving it until the 5th night to inform us, with a glass of 6 woodlice as evidence, before leaving at midnight came as a complete shock, which you have interpreted as "no concern". For those who do not suffer from insectophobia Garden Cottage is clearly not an "uninhabitable property". We strongly advise that in future you inform the booking agent of your partner's condition in advance." Kind Regards Niki Property Owner

  • "A stuning location in a beautifully rural and secluded setting."

What the cottage may lack in floorspace, is more than made up for in it's tranquil setting, and the expertly manacured and tended gardens and grounds, which the visitor has full access to. Because of it's remote location, we found it hard to find the entrance in the darkness, but were ushered in by Niki, waving a torch down the road. What a lovely surprise awaited us the next morning. All basic essentials are to hand which makes Self Catering very easy. In addition to all of this Niki displays some of her artistic "Bird in the hand" craftwork of stitched and embroidered pieces, to purchase as you wish. We bought some beautiful Christmas pieces to take home with us. We would definitely wish to return on a future occasion.

The cottage was perfect and suited both myself and my husband perfectly, it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The cottage was decorated beautifully and was thoroughly cleaned prior to our arrival. The cottage was situated in the small town of Black Bourton where we were able to enjoy stunning walks, we were only a short drive from some of the larger towns as well as local attractions. Niki had kindly created a welcome pack which highlighted everything the Cotswolds had to offer and the must see places, this was incredibly helpful and we planned some lovely day trips. We would also recommend the The Plough Inn in the village of Alvescot which was just a short 5 minute drive with free parking at the rear of the pub. The food was superb and reasonably priced, again we would have to thank Niki for the recommendation from the welcome pack which highlighted some wonderful places to eat nearby. We cannot find any fault with our stay at Garden Cottage and our hosts Niki and Lawrence were some welcoming and friendly, we were even given the pleasure of meeting Jasper the family Labrador who greeted us every morning by sitting by the back door in the garden. We highly recommend anyone who is considering a visit to the Cotswolds to stay at Garden Cottage, we are already talking about booking our next trip.

    Dingemans

  • "We enjoyed our stay in the garden cottage."

Our welcome by Mrs Clarke was friendly and informative. The location was delightful. We enjoyed the lovely garden and the generally good weather allowed us to sit outside and use the patio. Not having wifi was a disappointment, we spend the summer in Europe every year and always check that wifi is available so that we can keep in touch with family in Australia. For such a small cottage the facilities were good. lots of hot5 water, an excellent shower and comprehensive kitchen utilities. The bed was comfortable but perhaps a new duvet and pillows would be an improvement..

Thanks for the cake and flowers on arrival! We chose the cottage for its location in the centre of everywhere we wanted to visit, including Oxford (plenty to see and do). Bath was a bit further but the baths were a lovely insight into Roman England. The Cotswold Wildlife Park on the doorstep is a good day out, not just for children in well established gardens. The property

Garden Cottage is a delightful holiday cottage located adjacent to the wonderful Shilbrook Manor, itself a listed building built around the 1860's.

The property has undergone a complete overhaul and today provides a high standard of self catering accommodation whilst overlooking a simply stunning garden of two acres.

The cottage is situated on the edge of the hamlet of Black Bourton, which has history dating back to 1086, and is within easy reach of popular spots such as Burford, Woodstock and Lechlade on Thames.

Local attractions include Bampton's Downtown Abbey walk (2 miles away), William Morris's Kelmscott Manor (3 miles) and Jeremy Clarkson's 'The Farmer's Dog' pub (6 miles).

This romantic hideaway is ideal for a couple who want to escape to the Cotswolds.

The owner, who is a garden designer, is also a keen horticulturalist very happy to sell plants (when and where possible!) in addition to eggs and home made preserves.

About the location

BLACK BOURTON

Bampton 2 miles; Burford 7 miles; Oxford 21 miles.

Black Bourton is a small medieval village in Oxfordshire, notably the birthplace of influential novelist Maria Edgeworth and painter William Turner of Oxford. Black Bourton has an excellent gastropub and is home to St Mary the Virgin Church which features superb 13th century wall paintings carefully uncovered in 1932. The nearby village of Bampton, one of the principle locations for Downton Abbey, is well worth a visit to discover the many sites of interest, including the West Oxfordshire Arts Gallery. Burford, the ‘gateway' to the Cotswolds, is within easy reach, and Oxford is just 21 miles away. An excellent base for touring this beautiful region.
