  • "A lovely, quaint cottage in such a beautiful town!"

Our first visit to Stratford and we chose to stay for Christmas. The cottage had everything my family of 4 needed with comfortable beds, a lovely hot shower and a cosy open fire. The only slight complaint I’d have is it was a little cold at first and the heating took almost a day to get to the temperature I wanted. I feel the cold so this could just be a personal thing! But we would definitely return for another stay at Masons Court.

Location good, beds and chairs comfortable, kitchen well equipped -but I would not book again due to poor maintenance:- Overhead light in main bedroom not working Lamp on sitting room window not working Taps in bathroom stuck No instructions for house (lots of people have commented on this in the guest book) Paint work scruffy / dirty - house needs a deep clean /repainting Cheap plastic headboard in main bedroom

Overhead light in bedroom - there was an issue with the switch. We were not aware of this. After this was communicated to us after the guests has departed this was fixed straight away. If the guests had contacted us about this we could have sorted on the same day. Lamp on sitting room window. There was no issue with this light. The light was simply just turned off on the switch on the light. Tap in bathroom has now been fixed No instructions - this is something we will work on putting together for the cottage Paintwork scruffy - this is a valid point since this review we have been round to repaint certain areas Cheap plastic headboard in main bedroom - not had any other negative feedback about this before. It is a standard wooden/MDF bedframe so don't agree that there is anything wrong with this Property Owner

Couple of issues need addressing. Lock on door is temperamental and can take a few attempts to work. Tap in bathroom will not turn off without brute force. Main bedroom lights tripped the electric and didn’t work for stay ( need an info pack as it took a while in dark to find the fuse box)

The whole ambience of the cottage is amazing. Communication, advice, cleanliness, comfort, safety and location all score a 10 out of 10 from my party. We will definitely book again this year and I'm sure we have found our new go to place . We live over 100 miles away but the journey is worth it to get to this hidden gem

  • "We had a great time staying at 4 Mason's Court."

It sits on a relatively quiet road, considering it is so close to the centre of town, and is in walking distance of all the attractions. There were three of us and consequently #4 was very comfortable. However, in line with the points made in other reviews, it would be very "cosy" if there were four of you. You would probably have to move some furniture around downstairs. Also, the combination of a large double bed frame & small room means that the person sleeping furthest from the door has no bedside table (there isn't room) & has to get in & out of bed by crawling up from the end. The twin room is fine. The only other point to make is that the inclusion of an information pack, containing instruction manuals, etc, would take the guesswork out of operating things like the washing mashine, dishwasher, oven & even the coffee machine. It's obviously not rocket science but who wants to waste time on holiday with trial & error? Finally, I would like to end by stating that these couple of slightly negative points did not impact our enjoyment at all. Mason's Court is a fabulous place & I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again should I find myself in Stratford upon Avon.

  • "This property displayed a sign to say they had won Sykes "Little Gems" award for going "above and beyond" to make their property inviting back in 2018."

Felt like they are resting on their laurels as there were things that could be easily made better here. A missing hook on the back of the door, no cover for the egg seat in the garden so it was soaking and couldn't be used, ten hangers between four people, the ice compartment in the fridge (mentioned in other reviews as needing defrosted) was still useless until we did it ourselves) and a dripping tap in the bathroom. These could all have been so easily fixed but just hadn't been. The cottage is beautiful and historic and if you want to say you've stayed in the oldest residential building in Stratford, here's the place - or the other similar cottages which share the building - units 1 or 3 (2 is privately owned). It is very small for four guests though, and anyone over six foot will need to be careful not to bump their heads. The main bedroom is very small, watch you don't constantly bump your shin on the corner of the bed as you open the door, though the bed is most comfortable. The second bedroom is stylish and far more roomy but there is no wardrobe, only two large drawers to share between two. It could do with more shelves and hooks to allow you to spread out your belongings - we were fortunate in that our party were only three so we could live out of one of the suitcases stationed on the spare bed and I used the stairs to set out our shoes. The bathroom is very nice with a lovely modern bath and shower over it, though the plumbing needs some attention - and the toilet flush is on upside down - took us a day to work that out though once you see the problem, it works fine. In the kitchen, the layout is very attractive but there was no microwave and the stools for sitting round the breakfast bar were so very very uncomfortable we couldn't eat there. In good weather, you can instead eat at the large garden table which we did and enjoyed, this is benefitted by some pretty lighting in the evening. There was Netflix on a large television, and music, books, or dvds for your use. A parking permit allowed us to park in any of the surrounding streets free for the week - parking wardens are everywhere in Stratford! All in all, I personally wouldn't go back as I feel there are far better Sykes lets in the town such as 1 Masons Court ,which is considerably better in our option. It doesn't take much to defrost the freezer when guests are pointing this out, make the effort! Also only one house key is a bit inconvenient. Historically a win; comfort-wise could certainly be better.

    Reviewed by Jane3.4Jul 2023

  • "The freezer compartment in the fridge needed defrosting!"

The freezer compartment was completely full of ice, we arrived on a hot day and it would have been nice to have been able to have some fresh ice in the tray ready and waiting. There were crumbs under the bar stools in the kitchen and it was also clear no one had vacuumed behind the sofa or the chest of drawers in the twin bedroom! The carpets could have done with a steam clean. Walking around bare feet left feet very dirty. Should have realised as you can see the dirt stains in the carpets. It would have been nice to have had a patio umbrella or some kind of shade whilst sitting at the patio table, not everyone wants the hot sun beating down on them when they are sat outside.

Highchair and travel cot were good once we could find them, might be handy to have them out for those who have requested it in the future. As others have said, a microwave wouldn’t go a miss but managed without. Only niggles were the shower head coming away from the wall which is quite dangerous and the property would benefit from a deep clean, it was quite dusty in easy to reach places and marks on the walls etc other than that was a good stay.

Beautifully done up and decorated. Good utilities within the cottage, has everything you want/need kitchen wise. Could do with a few blankets for the living room and a couple of extra pillows upstairs. Also an automatic light in the court would be very useful, as the uneven cobbles can be a bit difficult to navigate in the dark! We took our own logs this year but found there were some available at the cottage. Pity there isn't a door curtain for the stable door at this time of year to help with heat loss but noted the addition of a door sausage since last year. One minor issue is the shower riser pipe is insecure and the top rain shower popped out of the bracket a couple of times which caused a slight panic. Overall though very nice and will return.

Would have benefitted from a few more instructions in property ie which bin for recycling/general waste, what days these should go out for collection, how to work heating, where to buy firewood but we managed to work all this out ourselves as we we were there a week. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 4 Mason's Court and would definitely stay again.

It would have been useful if we had a hand book which explained when to put out the bins etc. The heating came on and it was rather warm on our last day! We swept the path clear of the mulberries to avoid carrying them in to the cottage. I used the dustpan and brush and didn’t find the broom until the last day.. The character of the building definitely added to the Stratford experience. The interior is of a high quality with well equipt kitchen. Very comfortable, with good, easily manageable central heating and hot water. We were there during a very stormy period but didn't feel the need for extra heat from a fire. Good beds. Everything was within walking distance, plenty of restaurants and bars. We especially enjoyed Yabard craft ale bar on the same street. As others have said, it is quiet at night despite being in the town. We parked the car safely in a street nearby, using the pass provided (there's no longer an allocated space behind the house as earlier reviews indicate). For unloading it's easy to park for up to an hour outside the police station next door. A couple of suggestions: there's space in the kitchen for a microwave so why not provide a small one? And simple instructions about the heating & timings (perhaps laminated for Covid safety) would have been useful. The owner was very helpful when we texted him about the cottage not being warm enough & he changed the temperature & timings remotely to suit us. We didn't realise until the end that we could use the free-standing thermostat to change the temperature ourselves as we're unused to that type of thermostat and assumed all changes had to be done by the owner!! But we had a wonderful short break.

  • "The property is amazing and in an excellent location and I would definitely visit again."

We visited for the Christmas Market, the use of the parking permit makes things easier but the locations on where it could be used were very busy and had to try a few before getting sorted but I put that down to the time of year. There were no logs provided for the open fire even though the property states fuel included, only a few pieces of kindling had been left and being December there was some draft from the main door, knowing this now I would take my own supplies next time but its worth noting for future stayers. A vistors book with instructions would be beneficial, especially on how to increase the heating, we had to scramble around for manuals on the cooker, heating etc so it would be great to have all this in one location. All in all a fab property!!

Just happened to be the coldest weekend of the year and being the oldest property in Stratford it wasn't the warmest when we sat in for the Sunday evening. Soon used up the logs we took with us and the extra we bought from local discount store, front door could do with a draught proof sausage dog or similar. Not a complaint but we thought details stated fuel included, we were happy to take our own as a top up to any supplied. Anyway, we will definitely stay again and highly recommend this property and Sykes in general.

Fab location of course, you can walk into town in two minutes. We walked to the theatre and back.- no need to faff about with parking. In fact, we didn’t use the car for the whole holiday. Everything in Stratford was accessible by walking. Another nice surprise was that the cottage is actually set back away from the road, so it was much quieter and more secluded than anticipated. You walk beyond an old iron gate through a cute little walkway to reach it-it’s enchanting. We just wanted to stay forever. To sleep under 15th century beams, yet have all mod cons too, including a washer/ dryer and a dishwasher. The stairs are characterful but easy to negotiate- they’ve been made more accessible.
