  • "The Merchant’s Store was a perfect place to spend a week in Ireland."

From there we could easily drive to a number of other locations or just stay local as the urge dictated. Pubs and shops were within an easy walkable distance. Paul was very accommodating and easy to deal with - a charming gentleman indeed. If we’re lucky enough to get back to Ireland one day, we would definitely consider staying there again.

  • "The Merchant's Store is a genuinely great property providing ground floor access throughout, substantial rooms and a quiet location only 40 metres from the main Market Square and a superb 19th century pub - Crotty's - renowned for its friendly Irish atmosphere, cosy small rooms warmed by fires, rugby on TV, weekend live music, superb home-made food and very carefully looked after Guinness."

In addition the store is walking distance from local shops in Kilrush which is a beautiful West Clare small town on the stunning Shannon estuary and the Wild Atlantic Way drive or cycle route to see County Clare's impressive (very) high cliff-lined west coast. Inside the store we enjoyed the outstanding unique historic furniture and fixtures including paintings and signs and the carefully restored bar and shop features. As retired geography and history teachers we rated everything including the excellent value for money and scored the property unquestionably A+++ and ideal for a small group of up to 4 holiday makers.

Parking was free and we were close to the square and the shops. It was really easy to pick up the keys from the owner's shop and they were really helpful. (We had a toaster that didn't work and when we popped into the shop around the corner, they replaced it immediately.

Suggested a more detailed list of amenities in the house as people traveling on the budget airlines have restricted luggage and may prefer to know what they do not need to take,( but the house was lacking nothing)

  • "This was a truly amazing place to stay."

It was decorated and furnished in line with its era but still had all the comforts. The feel of the old bar was retained and this added to the experience. My 8 year old loved 'working' behind the bar taking orders for drinks and food. A great place to stay and so central to access all parts of county Clare.

The Merchant’s House Heritage Holiday Homes

These unique holiday homes overlook the Market Square in the lively harbour town of Kilrush, County Clare. Lovingly restored and beautifully furnished, these Kilrush homes offer wonderful period charm, boasting a number of original features dating from the property's beginnings in 1811 and subsequent history through the intervening 200 years. In 1963 the Fleadh Cheoil was held in Kilrush and The Dubliners played in what is now the kitchen of The Merchant’s Store. The timberwork and coving are faithfully presented in a style akin to that enjoyed by the milling merchant who first called the property home in the early 19th century. Antique furniture brings a certain level of luxury and visitors can take a step back in time and relax in the original cast iron clawed leg bath found in The Merchant’s House. For those that appreciate easy access to the amenities of a town, this Kilrush cottage townhouse is centrally located, perfect for the many shops, pubs and restaurants while the town is also home to a small beach, pier and marina. Kilrush is situated on the Wild Atlantic Way, a scenic driving route, which incorporates pretty coastal villages, walks and surfing beaches making it ideal for people of all ages whatever your taste of things to do. Upon leaving Kilrush, the Clare coast lays claim to some of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland while the spectacular Cliffs of Moher are less than an hour's drive. Whether you decide to explore the sights of this beautiful part of Ireland or to indulge in some traditional music and a pint of 'the black stuff' in one of the many welcoming pubs in the town, you can be rest assured that your charming Kilrush cottage townhouse will be waiting to welcome you home at the end of another fantastic day.
