Mountshannon is a lovely village on the shores of Lough Derg in County Clare, with pubs, a shop and a hotel. Mountshannon has a small harbour facing south onto the Lough, and a safe family bathing area, as well as a small but well-maintained park with lough views. There is easy access to Inish Cealtra, or Holy Island, from the village, and tours around the island are provided. On Inish Cealtra are church ruins, stone crosses, and a cemetery which is still in use. The more romantic visitors to Inish Cealtra may care to pledge their love by holding hands through the hole in the stone and vowing to be true. 5 miles away is Scarriff, a large village with great angling. Fishing, walking and cycling are all on offer throughout the area, and nearby Lough Derg is popular for fishing, boating and sailing.
