  • "Caherkeen cottage is a lovely place, well situated and carefully looked after."

I gave us (my daughter, my best-friend and me) utter satisfaction. We also appreciated Patrick Murphy's kind welcome and humour!

  • "Beautiful location of this Cottage: Newly build and well built, but fittings a little like dump you old china, cutlery etc to rental."

Mix match and a lot of chipped crockery. Cleaning could be a lot better. Reservation with Sykes was a nightmare and ruined the whole experience. The reservation staff were rude and opinionated and would lot listen to customer issues. No empathy and just quoted from the rule book. Never again. Owner had not a good word to say about Sykes and will not use again in the future. He thought rude to deal with and taking 20% fee. Loved the location but never again the Sykes booking agent. Terrible.

  • "The cottage is very comfortable."

Not quite as isolated as suggested given there is a house sharing the driveway but a beautiful spot. Dogs were very welcome but if your hound is not sheep friendly they can’t wander around the cottage untethered. Lots of the local walks also don’t allow dogs, even kept on the lead, woryh thinking about that before you plan your day. Would certainly come back,

It is one of the loveliest places on earth. Really well appointed, warm, and the view from the living area is breath taking. I cant wait to return.

  • "Fabulous view."

Stunning scenery on walks just up the road. Shingle beach a few minutes down the lane. House modern and clean and well appointed. Very helpful owner. Comfortable fresh cotton bedlinen. The leather armchairs were comfortable but a bit weathered! And although there was a large pasta cooking saucepan there was only one other small useable saucepan - the non stick ones were too scratched to use with bits coming off into the food - possibly worth throwing them out and replacing them with a non non-stick saucepans.

  • "The cottage is in an excellent location with stunning scenery within view and even more so with a short walk or car ride up the hill, where it is easy to park in a lay-by to watch sunset over the Skelligs and the fantastic coastline."

The entire area is a walker’s paradise (in clear weather) and there are walks to suit all grades at this end of the Beara Peninsula. We may have missed finding a shop at “2 miles”, usually picking up groceries in Eyeries, Allihies or Castletownbere which are further afield. We didn’t use the nearest pub but one in Allihies where the food was well cooked but gourmets might find it basic in scope. The owner is extremely friendly and also has another cottage next to Cahirkeen cottage. There is sufficient space and privacy between the two although we did not like to “invade” this by moving our picnic table into the evening sun at the end of our cottage patio. As there was a sharp north westerly blowing during our stay we were a bit chilly outside in the evening due to its aspect so preferred to eat indoors and admire the view from there. There is also an outdoor bench which we did move to a sunnier position late pm. No problem with sunrise! The cottage had pretty much everything we needed with comfy beds. The cottage was clean and tidy and we found the layout and uncluttered feel easy to settle into. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to friends and relatives, or rebooking.

  • "The cottage was beautifully kept with fantastic views of the the sea and hills from the kitchen/living room."

When we arrived, the house was already lovely and warm. The landlord was extremely friendly and very helpful in every way. The kitchen was fully functional and had everything you need for self-catering. There was also useful information on the local attractions and sights. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return again.

About the location

ALLIHIES, COUNTY CORK

Castletown Bearhaven 7.5 miles.

The village of Allihies in County Cork, on the Western tip of the wild and rugged Beara peninsula, lies in a region of unspoiled natural beauty. Allihies overlooks beautiful Ballydonegan Bay, with its magnificent quartz strand, a direct result of the mining era and somewhere you can take in some history at Allihies Copper mine museum. Each summer a festival is held in August (around the 15th), with horse racing, novelty events, and dancing in the Community Hall. The village lies on The Ring of Beara, a tourist trail of about 195 kilometres (121 miles) circumnavigating the peninsula. Attractions nearby include Dursey Island, which is linked to the mainland by a Cable Car and is the only such ride in Europe to cross over water. The island is also a recognised Bird Sanctuary, with numerous species, rare and otherwise, seen regularly. There are also many coastal and countryside walks and quaint villages to enjoy. Other favorites for visitors to Allihies include Dunboy Castle, Derrynane House and Puxley mansion. A great location for exploring West Cork.
