  • "The Good: The property and holiday experience itself was great."

The O'Regan's made sure we had everything we needed and were very helpful in giving us info we needed about the area to ensure we had a splendid time. The Bad: The only headache was having to re-schedule the holiday for September (it was originally planned for April) because of COVID. I didn't mind the re-scheduling itself too much because that is understandable. What was annoying was having to pay an extra £150 to reschedule it. (This was the cheapest week to re-schedule; a week before or after would have set us back an additional £300!!) I felt that was unfair, and wish that Sykes Cottages would have allowed us to re-schedule with no extra cost. I understand that COVID wasn't their fault, but it wasn't ours either; and I felt it was unfair for them to take it out of our hides.

  • "Cannot say a bad word about the property or the owners, it is a very deceiving property on arrival but it really well maintained."

The rooms were well equipped, the kitchen was well equipped and the living area very nice and comfortable. The heating system kept the property lovely and warm and was very quick to heat up. We found it very easy to locate the property and found the owners very welcoming. We had young children and the spiral stairs weren't ideal but we knew this prior to arrival. They loved the surroundings, met the family pets and really enjoyed the walks around. We would definitely return.

  • "This was a fantastic place to stay for a holiday."

The cottage had everything we needed and was really spacious for our family of 4. The owners lived a 4 minute walk from the lodge and were extremely helpful and hospitable. We were blessed with fantastic weather during our stay, and the location of the lodge meant that we could travel to most destinations in under an hour. Cobh, Cork City, Kilarney, Tralee and Kinsale were a few of our days out, and at night after dinner, we made our way to the owners house were the kids played football on the green, and we played snooker inside. They even have a small bar where you can pull your own pint of Guinness!!!! This was our first holiday doing self catering, but I have to say that it won't be the last, if we can continue to get great places to stay like this one.

  • "From the outside the cottage looked fine and on entering the kitchen all looked well."

However, we were sadly disappointed with the lack of some of the basic equipment for self catering such as a colander, measuring jug or indeed a jug of any sort, oven gloves, tray, washing up liquid, wash basket to take wet washing out to the line to dry it. There were a couple of books on Ireland which did prove useful but, unlike in most other cottages we have stayed, there were very few leaflets on places of local interest which would have provided us with opening times etc. The bedding and towels were ok but the bath mat in the en suite we used was dirty. There was also a dirty teatowel and dish cloth in one of the kitchen drawers. One of the worst things was a dreadful drain smell after using the shower or washbasin in the upstairs en suite shower room and the downstairs toilet. I did leave a note for the owner about this as it might have been caused by a leak.. Everywhere needed a really good clean: the shower screen was water-marked so clearly hadn't been cleaned properly. We couldn't use the dressing table as a previous guest must have left a 'vaping' device in one of the drawers which had leaked a sticky substance and the bottom drawer was sprinkled with wood dust from the dresser having active woodworm. All in all, very poor housekeeping.

  • "Jackie is a lovely lady who was very welcoming and informative, the cottage was immaculate."

The beds were so comfortable and beautiful bedding and towels. Lovely hot showers and a cosy wood burning fire. The cottage was very easy to find and an easy 5 mins to Macroom which has all amenities also its in an ideal spot to visit Blarney Castle and we visited friends in Kenmare really easily too. Wish we could have stayed longer!

About the location

Macroom 4.4 miles; Cork 19 miles; Killarney 33 miles.

Carrigadrohid is a village in County Cork and is placed on the north bank of the River Lee. The village is home to a shop and pub and also to Carrigadrohid Castle built in the 15th century by the MacCarthys of Muskerry. Nearby is the small market town of Macroom nestled in the picturesque valley of the Sullane River and is dominated by the walls of Macroom Castle. This bustling town offers a choice of shops, restaurants and pubs, three hotels and still holds a twice weekly street market. One of Macroom's best kept secrets, Castle Demesne, is set amidst hundreds of acres of mystical woodland, awash with secluded riverside walks and stunning, panoramic views of the town, while three miles from Macroom lie western Europe's only extensive remains of Alluvial Forest. Carrigaphooca Castle, stood on an outcrop of rock, high above the trees is worth a visit, while the fabulous cities of Cork and Killarney are within easy touring distance, as are the stunning beaches of West Cork.
