  • "Joe's cottage was a brilliant base for our holiday in Donegal."

It was so convenient having a young child, everything we needed was there in Joe's cottage. The hosts were so welcoming and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed. The property itself was gorgeous with amazing views. We felt very at home there and we could not recommend this property enough.

It is very comfortable, and really well equipped (a real bonus for us was having WiFi). The owners were very helpful and friendly. We had afternoon tea, and a glowing stove, waiting for us when we arrived. Absolutely lovely!

  • "This place is like a slice of heaven."

Joes cottage is a fabulously restored cottage with exceptional views. Mary and John have put great time and effort into making sure everything you could possibly need for your a stay is catered for, and I mean everything (picnic baskets, stroller, kids thermometer, loads of clean towels etc).We arrived to a warm cottage with some treats on arrival, a map of all the local must sees and even new toys for our little 5 year old. Having stayed in many air B &Bs before this is by far the best one I have ever stayed at. They even had the fire laid for us and fuel for future fires. They were there to greet us on arrival and spent time going through how to use everything and gave us a history of the area. They checked in by text to see if we needed anything further and were in general just a delight. The cottage is close to all the scenic places to visit (sea caves, waterfall, dolmen) and is surrounded by beautiful beaches. The town of ardhara is 5 mins away by car. I can't rave about this place enough. We will definitely be going back. Thank you so much John and Mary for a lovely stay. Samantha, Andrew and Ava

  • "The location was fantastic and the promised view lived up to the expectations."

Inside and outside the house there were so many places to sit and relax and take in the views and the sunsets. Have breakfast and dinner outside, relax in front of the fire and take in a lovely walk at Loughros point. Just 2km from Ardara but more importantly there are amazing beaches, boat trips, the highest sea cliffs in Europe, neolithic sites and great food within easy reach. The hosts left us lovely scones to get us going and gave us lots of information about the area. I would definitely return to Joe's Cottage.

  • "The most perfect holiday cottage in a beautiful part of the world."

It had absolutely everything we needed (2 adults and 2 small kids), as well as character and charm in abundance. Joe and Mary were so warm and welcoming. The views are spectacular. It’s fully enclosed so very safe for kiddies. By far the best holiday house we’ve ever rented. We can’t wait to go back.

About the location

ARDARA, COUNTY DONEGAL

Donegal Town 17 miles; Derry Airport 54 miles.

Ardara, voted by The Irish Times as one of the 'best villages to live in' in 2012, is one of the most attractive towns in Donegal, set in a wide valley where the Owentocher River enters Loughros More Bay. Visitors can enjoy the many craft and gift shops, together with the traditional Irish pubs. There are many brown trout lakes in the area for budding fisherman, or why not discover the nearby caves and falls of Maghera? Enjoy walking the magnificent Glengesh Pass, with spectacular views over the Atlantic from Loughros Point. Every March, the village hosts a successful walking festival with walkers coming from all over the world, while May boasts the annual “Cup of Tae” traditional music festival. Donegal town, 17 miles away, is situated at the mouth of Donegal Bay, on the River Eske, and is overshadowed by the Bluestack Mountains, which provide a great base for hill walking. With Donegal Castle, and the remains of a Franciscan Abbey which dates back to the 15th century, there is plenty of Irish history to absorb. There is a horse riding centre just one mile away, great golfing opportunities nearby, with a magnificent links course open for players of all abilities just seven miles away, and five miles away is Killybegs Sea Angling, where a competition is held on the first Saturday in May and September each year, along with the Killybegs International Sea Angling Festival, which is a two day event on the second weekend in July. Also 20 miles away is the wonderful Slieve League mountain, which has a height of 601 metres (1972 feet) and is situated on the Atlantic coast of County Donegal. With its sandy beaches offering good surfing conditions, restaurants, shops and pubs, this is the perfect base for an Irish break.
