  • "The house was lovely and comfortable and warm."

It was also very clean throughout - kudos to the cleaner(s). Just a few points of mild criticism: 1. There was a strong smell of paint and new carpets and wood almost everywhere; some people like it, but it's actually quite toxic, and the house could've done with more airing after the upgrades. 2. It is virtually impossible to keep the wood dry around the kitchen sink, particularly with the siting of the taps, and it felt quite stressful all week trying to prevent splashes and/or immediately drying them up. 3. There are a few minor marks and stains around the place which should be acknowledged by any owner, but particularly one requiring a 'good housekeeping' bond; it was also quite stressful going around and taking photographs as evidence that they were already there. 4. The bins are not good - other neighbours*/passers-by were using the general rubbish one, and there were strange things in the recycling bins (such as they were). (*Probably those on the corner, who were often noisy and annoying, and also came into your front garden at least once - probably to use the bin!) 5. Thank you for the welcome gifts, but we're teetotallers and vegans - many other people are one or the other, but don't seem to exist for holiday let owners! We gave the fudge to a visiting friend, and left the wine for the cleaner/charity/yourselves. 6. We were given the wrong contact number for you by Sykes - luckily we didn't need it. 7. The broadband password you give in the folder is wrong - it is case-sensitive, unlike your iteration. It wasn't easy to read the correct version off the unit. All of this sounds like a list of complaints, but it's not - just a few tips from the renter's point of view! Overall it was a great week, and we hope to return next year!

Hi Eileen! We’re so glad you had a great week and enjoyed your stay! Thank you for taking the time to provide your suggestions - we’ll address these for future guests, and hopefully ahead of your return visit next year. We’re sorry to hear you had problems with the neighbours and the bins. We’ve not had troubles before, and chatting to other neighbours on the street it seems that your visit coincided with the corner house clearing the property for sale (it seems we they “borrowed” all the bins on the street that weekend). We’re confident that this was a one off, and sorry that impacted you. We look forward to welcoming you back next year! Property Owner

The property

Dorset Villas welcomes you to a classic Victorian-style home in the heart of Matlock, where leafy streets, historic character and easy access to the Peak District National Park set the scene for a memorable stay.

Ideal for families or friends, this inviting house blends period features with everyday practicality, creating a place that feels instantly lived-in and ready to enjoy.

From the moment you arrive, the house reveals its warmth and personality.

The entrance hall leads into a cosy sitting room where a woodburning stove becomes the natural focal point, perfect for evenings spent chatting, reading or settling in after a day outdoors.

Beyond this, a separate dining room encourages long meals and shared conversations, whether you’re enjoying a home-cooked dinner or planning the next day’s adventure.

The farmhouse-style kitchen adds to the home’s character, offering a sociable space with a table and window bench that’s ideal for morning coffee or keeping the cook company.

A utility area keeps everything running smoothly, while a door opens directly onto the enclosed rear garden, complete with outdoor furniture, bike storage and thoughtful touches for walkers and cyclists returning from the trails.

Upstairs, two generously sized double bedrooms provide calm, restful spaces to retreat to at the end of the day.

These can be arranged as two double bedrooms, or as one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, containing two single beds.

Guests should add a comment when booking, if two single beds are required, so that the rooms can be prepared accordingly.

Each room is well proportioned and quietly tucked away, while the family bathroom offers both a bath and a walk-in shower, giving everyone the choice of a long soak or a quick refresh.

Matlock itself offers plenty to explore.

Hall Leys Park is a lovely spot for a stroll beside the river, Heights of Abraham offers cable car rides and panoramic views across the Derwent Valley, and Gulliver’s Kingdom provides a fun-filled day out for families.

Nearby Bakewell is a highlight too, known for its handsome stone buildings, riverside walks and the chance to sample the famous Bakewell Pudding.

The Peak District National Park lies right on your doorstep, opening up a world of outdoor experiences.

Walk the dramatic limestone landscapes of Dovedale, with its stepping stones and winding river path.

Cycle or wander along the Monsal Trail, a former railway line offering tunnels, viaducts and sweeping valley views.

For something truly iconic, explore the grand estate of Chatsworth House, where stately rooms, landscaped gardens and miles of parkland create a day out to remember.

Dorset Villas is an excellent choice for your Peak District escape.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.
