  • "We had a lovely week in the Light House during this February half term."

The house is in a quiet neighbourhood. It is bright, warm and cosy and fitted with everything you could possibly need. Although the weather didn't allow us to use the terrace for our meals outdoors, we did spend some time stargazing in the 'secret' garden overlooking the estuary. There is plenty to enjoy in the immediate surrounding, with lovely beaches and walks. (Don't miss the studio of local ceramist Sandy Brown, open on Fridays only.) A lovely touch was the welcome tea, coffee and milk in the fridge for that first morning's cuppa. Thank you!

  • "Comfy, well equipped property as described."

Parking was no problem in South Road. Appledore is charming with good restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops plus a very useful deli and grocery store, all a short walk from Light House. Wonderful ever-changing views of the estuary.

  • "The Light House was one of the best properties we've rented."

Great views, good spaces outside and light and practical interiors. Bed rooms snug and comfy. The range of books on the shelves was one of the most attractive, erudite and entertaining. TV was easy to use (they aren't always) and the kitchen had everything we needed including small amounts of condiments/oils etc. Parking wasn't a problem and the steep hillside front door was only 20 yards or so to the flat sea-board connecting to the prom. Ate well in the Beaver Inn and also liked the look of the Royal George and the Seagate where we enjoyed a good pint.

  • "We absolutely loved the Light House and are planning our return visit already."

Very comfortable and well equipped house in a brilliant location. A few minutes walk from the village centre, with at least 3 different routes there along charming alleys and little lanes. (The owners left very helpful instructions and general information). We liked the location, central enough without being too noisy, slightly elevated and close to the historic shipbuilding area, which has its own charm. Spent many happy hours relaxing with a cup of tea in the terraced garden, soaking up the wonderful view over the estuary. Lots of good eateries, shops and a deli/bakery in Appledore and only a short drive to Westward Ho! which provided endless and varied entertainment for two 12 year olds. We found everyone very friendly and welcoming. Thank you for being such a great base for a very memorable holiday.

  • "Thank you for a wonderful stay at The Lighthouse!"

The house is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The rooms are excellent size and the kitchen/diner/lounge feature is perfect for families. We loved waking up to the view of the estuary and we were also able to watch boat races in the evenings. There was no building work taking place when we stayed and the house at the bottom of the garden does not obstruct the view. We've visited Appledore many times and this home was a much desired property as there is free parking in the street outside. There are lots of games, DVD's and books at the house which kept our little ones entertained. The walk to the village, although steep, can be made easier via the streets to avoid the narrow road. The two outside areas area separated by a small alleyway, which can make supervising little children from the house tricky. The patio area, although well decorated, needed a bit of a clean before we could use it on arrival. I think the recent bad weather had caused lots of moss etc to fall which we needed to clean up from the outside seating area before using. The table and chairs on the patio are large and able to seat a family of 6 comfortably for dinner. Thank you Lighthouse! We had a fantastic holiday and have made some wonderful memories!

  • "From the description and photos we were expecting a bit of a wow but felt the approach to the property was disappointing with overgrown brambles and the disused shipyard."

The property itself was nicely furnished clean and comfortable a vacuum cleaner and tumble dryer would have been welcome. The beds were lovely and comfortable but would mention the single sleigh beds are a bit large for the room as my husband did walk into one and cut his toe. The property had a nice view of the estuary and it was nice to have usable outside space but again the photo showed lovely decking which was not present and the courtyard and furniture were dirty

Thanks so much for your feedback. Just to be clear for potential guests, the ‘overgrown brambles’ sentence refers to the backroad into Appledore, over which we have little control! I’m so glad you felt the property was nicely furnished, clean and comfortable, with good views. The decking was plastic and cheap, so we upgraded it to a lovely Indian stone patio, which in general has been really appreciated. The patio should be being swept regularly between guests and we will make sure it happens! Thanks again. Property Owner

  • "The pictures are deceiving as there is now a property built at the end of the garden obstructing the view."

The listing states that animals are not allowed at the property but on arrival, we saw a bowl of dog biscuits and a note welcoming us to the dog friendly property. We chose this property for the view which is no longer as stated, and also - due to allergy to dogs - chose as pets were not allowed. We only select properties that do not allow pets for this reason and the listing is therefore very misleading and could - to some - be a major problem. Our allergy reaction was thankfully small, but may be different to others whose allergies are severe and the listing should therefore be altered to reflect this. The location was great with a short walk to Appledore and perfect for exploring North Devon and had everything you needed for a relaxing break. The property is well maintained and clean but would be nice if the balcony had been swept as it was full of old cobwebs when the doors were opened. The welcome pack and supplies left were great and very welcome.

Hi. Thanks for your feedback. I hope others will scroll down to see the feedback from other guests about the views, as they are all really positive. I’m glad you felt the property was in a great location, clean, well equipped and well maintained. So sorry a note was left about the place being dog-friendly, with some dog biscuits. That was an error on the part of our (generally excellent) cleaning company. We like dogs, but do not ever allow guests to bring them to the property! Our son is allergic too. I have spoken to the company, who have apologised and will make sure that does not happen again. Best wishes. Property Owner

Everything required is supplied and I can't think of anything lacking in terms of facilities/equipment. Just 1 small point, I think the dishwasher 'go' button is broken/missing and so it makes the operation a little challenging! Great views and a short walk form the Quay in Appledore along some very quaint Devon fisherman cottages lanes.

  • "We have just returned from a superb relaxing stay at The Lighthouse."

We arrived late after a long journey, it was so welcoming to step into a warm relaxing home. The lights were twinkling across the estuary; day and night the view was sublime. There was a notification on the website of building work possibly limiting the view. Ignore that, the building is almost complete and is low level and discrete, we didn't give it another thought. This is a beautiful place to stay and the beds were like sleeping on clouds, soo comfortable. The cottage was well equipped and tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and with a welcoming cream tea awaiting us. Our agenda was mainly to relax, with some sightseeing. The lighthouse is an ideal base. We had leisurely breakfasts in the well equipped kitchen overlooking the calming waters of the estuary, watching the changing tides and small boats. Easy access to all areas of Devon, we visited Illfracombe, Woolacombe, Bideford (good for supermarket shopping) Barnstaple and the jewel of Devon, Clovelly. Appledore itself is a traditional fishing village, the quayside and market street shops are quaint, compact and offers everything you could need, we particularly recommend Sylvester's Fish & Chips on Market Street... The chocolate shop opposite was an ideal distraction while waiting for fresh fish to be cooked. We highly recommend The Lighthouse and many thanks to the owners Lisa and Steve, for sharing this gem.

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at The Lighthouse."

Setting and views over the estuary are fabulous and available directly from all the downstairs seating areas, outside patios and two of the three bedrooms. The lower seating area is particularly warm on a sunny day, very relaxing space to a have sit and read or just take in the views. The kitchen is well set up for home catering and easy to find your way around. However, we’d definitely recommend trying out some of the eateries in and around Appledore, Instow and nearby Biddeford. Bathroom is a good size and lovely shower with no hot water issues for 5 of us. Downstairs cloakroom provides a useful additional loo. We were a bit worried about parking given some comments, but found even during our high season stay we could park easily on the street, just not necessarily directly outside the property. Appledore is a great base to explore the north Devon coast but don’t miss out on the local attractions - catching the ferry over to Instow or having a walk or bike ride in the Tarka Trail.

Located in a quiet road on the outskirts of Appledore, about a 6 or 7 minute downhill stroll from the quayside. If you follow the owners guide into town you can go through a couple of pedestrian side streets and bypass the main road. There is no allocated parking and whilst there are plenty of cars in this residential area, we never had any problems parking either right outside or opposite the property. The house is mid terrace and it has been renovated and furnished to a very good standard. The 2 tier rear garden and terraces with perfect views across the estuary are the highlight. Overall 5 stars; thoroughly enjoyed our week.

Its decorated and furnished to a very high standard, was absolutely spotless and is in such a lovely position with beautiful views across the estuary. We had one little query when arrived and I just cant fault the owner at all. The minor issue was resolved straight away. The lighthouse is a very short walk into the centre of appledore where we enjoyed late evening crabbing once the tide had come in. We enjoyed food at the flame factory and the Instow arms and morning pastries from John's. We just wish we had of booked into the Seagate prior to our stay as the menu looked great but they were fully booked. During our stay we visited Westward Ho, woolacombe, Bude, Croyde and Saunton Sands, all of which were lovely and very easy to reach. We also went to the Cedars on the way to Braunton which is a lovely little pub. The lighthouse is definitely a lovely base to explore north devon with that extra bit of luxury and comfort.

The property

The Light House is situated just a short stroll from the quay in the thriving village of Appledore, on the coast of north Devon.

Inside, the owners have created a beautiful and very comfortable contemporary interior which makes the most of the wonderful light that floods the house, with a real home-from-home vibe.

The home, facilities and location lend itself to wonderful holidays all year round.

Be welcomed into a large open-plan living space with a fold-back glass wall and magnificent views overlooking the estuary and Instow Beach.

Outside you will find an enclosed patio garden with comfortable furniture, and of course a barbecue.

From the patio go down a few steps to the stunning lower terrace.

The spacious built-in seating area provides another beautiful vantage point to read, enjoy a cool drink or simply sit quietly and soak in the ever-changing views.

Inside you will find floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with books for all ages, and there are games, CDs, smart TV and a guitar so there is no shortage of things to keep you entertained if you just want to relax at home.

The stunning views and the changing tides are yours, whatever the weather!

Sit at the breakfast bar, the kitchen table or out on the patio savouring your fresh croissants from the deli as you plan your day.

The kitchen houses lovely cookware and all the appliances needed for creating some delicious meals, whilst the dishwasher ensures that you spend your time relaxing, not washing up!

The downstairs WC with cloakroom, washing machine and shoe storage area, helps keep the open-plan space uncluttered and beautiful even with a full house.

On the first floor, you will find three bedrooms, set up as a king-size sleigh bed, a twin room and a single bed (day bed style), suitable for families and friends.

The master bedroom has a French carved wooden bed and a dressing table so you can prepare for your day in style - and the best view from bed that you may ever see.

Enjoy your morning cuppa snuggled in your goose-down duvet with the doors to the Juliet balcony flung open and just watch the boats go bobbing by.

In the twin room sink into the luxury mattresses on the oak sleigh beds and soak in the stylish and gently Art Deco feel of the room.

If you are the lucky person who gets bedroom three you can spend your time creating wonders at the beautiful desk over-looking the estuary, and even set your bed up sofa-style during the day and enjoy your own mini ‘sitting room’.

The family shower-room benefits from a rain-shower, large stainless-steel towel rail and a sun-pipe in the ceiling.

If you are bringing little ones, a travel-cot, stair-gate and baby listener can provided - because packing for a young family is hard enough without having these on your list!

After a day of sun and miles of sand at Westard Ho! beach, or the fun of crab fishing over the edge of the bustling quay, return ‘home’ to enjoy the fabulous views across the estuary while the barbecue sizzles and take all your meals alfresco on the comfortable patio.

Relax after a day of walking, cycling or simply enjoying the excellent pubs, restaurants, delis, art galleries and quirky shops in the village.

While you're in Appledore, don’t forget to take the little fishing boat ‘ferry’ across to Instow beach, and sample the famous Hockings ice-cream with clotted cream.

Or head five minutes away to the seaside village of Westward Ho! with its endless sandy beach, pop-up oyster bar and seaside fun - perfect for days of sunbathing, swimming, sandcastle-competitions or taking the opportunity to take up some surfing!

Fabulous for breathtaking winter walks too.

Make the most of your stay in Appledore by walking or cycling part of the Tarka Trail which passes through the village - and if you're looking for something more country based, then look no further than Northam Burrows Country Park just a few minutes away, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and also perfect for long walks.

Staying in Appledore you are also within reach of the Royal North Devon Golf Club which has been named in the 'Top 100 Courses in the World’, and tennis courts and indoor swimming pool are within five minutes by car.

Further afield are the bustling towns of Bideford with its famous Pannier Market, and Ilfracombe with its historical and artistic attractions, quirky harbour and stunning coves.

The Light House is an excellent modernised cottage showcasing the best of Devon all year round.
