The property

Hidden away amidst rolling green hills and the narrow country lanes of East Devon, Kingfisher cottage is one of a small group of privately owned cottages that lie within the owners’ immaculate grounds just outside the village of Membury.

An ideal base for a couple or friends wishing to explore the region on foot or by bike.

Kingfisher is a spacious and comfortable cottage with immense character and charm.

Having once been split into two apartments the cottage has two en-suite bedrooms, a lovely double room on the first floor, and a ground floor versatile super king-size zip /link double, that can be a twin on request.

A pretty, first floor sitting room is dual aspect and bright and airy, boasting wonderful views across the grounds and countryside beyond.

A spacious dining area is on the ground floor which serves as the main entrance and leads to a neat galley kitchen.

Outside to the front there is a sunny patio equipped with seating and table, and to the rear, a dinky, private garden, surrounded with pretty, flowering shrubs which offers a lovely spot for an afternoon cream tea as the sun creeps around the side of the cottage.

The immaculate grounds are shared with the other cottages on site, and have a barbecue area and seating for picnics or relaxing with a good book.

Membury lies in a beautiful corner of the Blackdown Hills an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is conveniently placed to explore East Devon, Dorset and Somerset, with close proximity to all three borders.

The market town of Axminster is just under 5 where you will find the Axminster River Cottage Canteen and just outside the town, River Cottage HQ.

Visit the coastal town of Seaton and the new Seaton Jurassic, or a stroll along Seaton Wetlands and discover the wildlife that live in along the scenic estuary.

The popular coastal resort of Lyme Regis is 9 miles.

Enjoy a stroll along the seafront or sample some local seafood at Hix overlooking the beach.

Try your hand at the latest sport of Paddleboarding, tuition and boards are available from the beach.

The woods at Trinity Hill, just outside of Axminster provide a lovely circular woodland walk and the Tea Pot cafe at Miller Farm Shop at Kilmington makes a great place to stop for a cup of tea and slice of cake.

There are some super gastro pubs in the area, The Tytherleigh Arms, on the way to Chard comes highly recommended although it may be worth booking in advance.

About the location

AXMINSTER

Wadbrook 3 miles; Chard 7 miles; Taunton 24 miles.

The lovely market town of Axminster has been made famous by the well-known organic shop and canteen in the area, which were introduced by TV presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Nestled in outstanding peaceful countryside, Axminster is certainly a place to relax and unwind. Famous for its carpets, which are often likened to Turkish examples, it is one of Devon’s prettiest smaller towns. Situated on the River Axe and within easy reach of both the West Dorset and East Devon Jurassic Coast, Axminster has many attractions, including plenty of privately owned shops, a weekly market and excellent old inns, with one dating back 100 years with its own resident ghost! With beautiful views on offer and the National Trust properties of Shute Barton and Loughwood Meeting House close by, Axminster is a must to visit.
