The property

This delightful country cottage lies deep in the East Devonshire countryside, close to the tiny village of Membury and a short distance from the market town of Axminster.

Perfectly placed for a walking holiday or those seeking rural peace and tranquility, Wagtail is one of a small group of privately owned holiday cottages that share immaculate and well-tended grounds along with the owner who lives in the main farmhouse.

French doors from your own private garden lead into a cosy sitting room with electric woodburner style stove for added warmth in cooler off season months.

There is a separate dining area and a neat modern kitchen to the side and a useful utility room with cloak room/WC.

Upstairs there are two pretty country bedrooms; a spacious double with cot and a twin that can be joined for a king-size double on request.

They share a modern first floor family bathroom.

Outside, a pretty enclosed garden is a real bonus and is equipped with table and chairs providing a private retreat for evening drinks.

Guests also have full use of the beautiful grounds with barbecue area and picnic areas.

There is plenty of parking on site in a private carpark a short walk up the hill from the cottage.

Lying amidst rolling hills and narrow country lanes in a beautiful corner of the Blackdown Hills an AONB, the area is a walkers’ paradise with two country walks from the grounds leading through picturesque meadows and rolling green woodland.

The market town of Axminster is a short drive where you will find the popular Axminster River Cottage Canteen and just outside the town, River Cottage HQ.

The town hosts a popular weekly market and the area is ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle.

The coast is within easy reach with popular resorts of Lyme Regis, Seaton and Beer all within a half hour drive.

There is certainly much to do and explore in this fabulous region of Devon, however if all you wish to do is relax and unwind, then Wagtail makes a great choice for a countryside break at any time of year.

About the location

AXMINSTER

Wadbrook 3 miles; Chard 7 miles; Taunton 24 miles.

The lovely market town of Axminster has been made famous by the well-known organic shop and canteen in the area, which were introduced by TV presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Nestled in outstanding peaceful countryside, Axminster is certainly a place to relax and unwind. Famous for its carpets, which are often likened to Turkish examples, it is one of Devon’s prettiest smaller towns. Situated on the River Axe and within easy reach of both the West Dorset and East Devon Jurassic Coast, Axminster has many attractions, including plenty of privately owned shops, a weekly market and excellent old inns, with one dating back 100 years with its own resident ghost! With beautiful views on offer and the National Trust properties of Shute Barton and Loughwood Meeting House close by, Axminster is a must to visit.
