  • "I love going to The Bakehouse."

It is my favourite part of the Moor. Unfortunately I could not go with my daughters as we now have a little dog. That is the only downside

  • "Well equipped cottage."

Fantastic out of the way location. Would return.

    Mrs Caprice-payneJul 2021

  • "Lovely restful cottage with lots of original features with a contemporary twist."

Delightful setting nestled right on the edge of Dartmoor with lovely walks from the cottage - it did feel as though you were away from everything and could enjoy a well earned break.

  • "Very quiet and remote location."

Little traffic on lanes, great walks on moors. Owners very helpful.

  • "A lovely quiet cottage with great character."

Set close to the moor, with great walks of all types, in all directions. We loved our stay.

    Mrs JonesJun 2021

  • "Very cosy cottage in quiet surroundings, with lots of walking on the doorstep."

The owners were friendly and helpful, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It might be worth mentioning in the details that the bathroom is on the ground floor, as some guest may like to know this in advance.

  • "The cottage is supposed to be able to cater for 4 people, yet the downstairs accommodation is TINY and you would have to start moving the furniture around if 4 people wanted to sit at the table!"

We always go for extra space when booking a cottage (there were only 2 of us), yet even with just the two of us it felt very constrained downstairs - often we were squeezing past each other in the kitchen area. The cottage was VERY spidery - cobwebs everywhere and large harvestman spiders had to be regularly removed. If you had a fear of spiders (which I do) this would be a nightmare. A good regular vacuum using the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner would sort this out.

  • "If you’re looking for the quintessential cosy little cottage on Dartmoor, then look no further."

The cottage is nestled on the edge of the high moor, with great walks right on your doorstep. The walk through the fields and down the lane to the pub, with a sky full of stars was a highlight. Beautiful spot, wonderful cottage and very friendly and helpful owner. It helped that the weather was as good as it was, and returning from our walks to light the log burner, making hot chocolate and snuggling down and watching the night draw in was simply perfect.

  • "Its great to deal with such an efficient company - and particularly one that answers the phone within a few rings."

The property

Equidistant between the pretty villages of Throwleigh and Gidleigh is The Bakehouse, a beautifully renovated, late medieval cottage sheltered by oak trees.

Inside is smart with slate floors downstairs and beautiful oak floors upstairs.

The living area is small but perfectly formed, and well thought out to provide you with everything you'll need, as well as a host of features, including granite worktops, a huge fireplace with wood burning stove and original ancient stone stairs.

On the first floor are two bedrooms, a roomy king-size double with handsome roof timbers and a twin (2'6" beds, linkable to 5' double).

Sunny and south facing, The Bakehouse looks out over its own neat, walled garden where you can sit in the sun and listen to bees, and birdsong.

The cottage is part of the historic group of farm buildings around the ancient farmhouse.

The owners run the farm, where cattle, sheep and ponies are grazed.

Nearby Chagford offers a choice of interesting shops and inns, a seasonal outdoor pool and tennis courts, and the cathedral city of Exeter is just 17 miles away.

Sandy beaches are a 20 mile drive away.

The Bakehouse is a lovely retreat with wonderful walking directly on to the moors from your doorstep; abundant wildlife and moorland archaeology.
