  • "We have stayed here many times and love the rustic and charming cottage, great location a short walk from Salcombe, fab fire and dog friendly garden."

Well kitted out with everything you need. Upgrades are brilliant. We’ll be back

Im so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Elworthy once again. Thank you for your comments we do try hard to make the cottage as comfortable as possible. Its situation and ample parking makes it a special place to stay for attractive walking to town along the creek. Property Owner

  • "Looked like lots of improvements have been made in recent times but still very musty especially in cupboards."

Quaint cottage. Log fire was excellent and made a real difference to comfort.

We are sorry you felt the cottage was musty, prior to your visit we had an exceptional amount of rain which could have caused the problem, in these old listed properties. Now the season is coming to a close we have an opportunity to do any work necessary. Pleased you enjoyed the woodburner. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful looking cottage in a superb location with easy access to Salcombe and surrounding areas."

Bed was very comfortable with nice linen. However, the cottage was not clean, lots of cobwebs and dust, paint chipped off inside walls, frayed carpet in sitting room. On arrival it smelt very damp and musty. The fridge had been turned off, door closed and had a pool of water in it snd smelt. We had to wash the crockery snd glasses before use due to dust and cobwebs. The sitting room door curtains are far too long and were damp and musty at the bottom. Some of our clothes felt damp after a few days. The wet room shower drained very slowly. Dog mess in the garden had not been cleaned, the garden was overgrown and therefore limited access to the shed. Poor instructions regarding recycling. There are no facilities in the Boatyard, we asked 3 local people none of whom knew where we could recycle. Bins and boxes should be provided as other properties have them. The hoover didn’t work properly snd was clogged up. Overall it felt tired and unloved. Could do with a good clean and TLC.

How disappointed as the owner of Elworthy to read your comments. The cottage had guests up to the day of your arrival so i cannot understand the fact that the fridge was turned off and cleaners had been in on the changeover. The cleaners spend between 4 - 5hrs cleaning and making beds so no excuses for cobwebs. What a shame as we have had a very busy season with the majority of guests enjoying their time at the cottage and the beautiful Salcombe area. Many have rebooked. I will investigate your comments, and as you can imagine following a busy season, the winter is the time for re decorating etc. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was lovely on the outside, great location with good parking and outside space."

And quiet. Unfortunately the ground floor around the wet room was damp and as we had lots of rain the week we were there it just got a musty smell which was also in the front room and it wasn’t great. The fire was great and helped a bit in the evening. The cottage does need attention inside on the ground floor. Upstairs was fine. Beds comfortable. It also needs to be made clearer that the wet room is on the ground floor and the beam at the bottom of the stairs low. Finally recycling… request to do so down by the boat yard but no guidance or containers to sort and take down. Most places allow you to recycle at the cottage and it’s sorted thereafter.

  • "Wonderful location."

Adorable cottage but it does need a deep clean and some renovation. A tumble dryer or outdoor washing line would be useful. The shepherds hut is super cute but the mattress is too big for the base so has no support on one edge. But on the whole, a gorgeous place to stay. Thank you.

Thank you for your comments - yes the location is a big plus especially with plenty of space for car parking. I will ask the caretaker re the washing line as it was in situ as far as im aware. Regarding the mattress in the Shep Hut it fits exactly on the base, i can only imagine it had come forward of its base, so very easily rectified. Sorry it was a problem for you. Property Owner

  • "A lovely well equipped quaint cottage."

Although expecting low ceilings, because of its age, we think it would help if it was mentioned in the information that anyone 6 ft. or over is going to find the sitting room and kitchen very challenging. We had travelled a long way so perhaps some fresh milk for a hot drink and enough kindling for a fire the first night (storage heaters not really sufficient in the cooler months) would have have been both thoughtful and welcoming. Furnishings, beds and linen very comfortable, and position of cottage excellent for all we wanted to do.

  • "The cottage is in a perfect location, so quiet yet within a fifteen minute walk of bustling Salcombe."

It’s thoughtfully decorated with some lovely pieces of furniture, especially the bed! Unfortunately, as we were staying at the end of February we did find a couple of the rooms chilly. The heating isn’t really sufficient in the shower area and the living room heater didn’t seem to work very well. However, the bedrooms were cosy and warm. The dishwasher was also broken but hopefully this is easily rectified for the next guests. We would have no hesitation in staying here again, it would be perfect in the summer.

Thank you for your feedback, the heaters are new so we must investigate why they didnt work as expected. Did you light the woodburner? Its very efficient and really does blast out the heat. Will take a look at the problem with the dishwasher. Property Owner

  • "On arrival we were very surprised to find the garden very overgrown and unkempt and encountered several steep steps which were not mentioned in properties description."

Inside the cottage felt damp and smelt of drains and our first thought was to make a cup of tea, only to find the crockery chipped. We entered the living room and went to open the door to the outside and tripped over the fraying jute mat placed there. A second mat in front of the fire was in the same condition. Overall the cottage was grubby, peeling paint, cobwebs, windows that wouldn't open, carpet had been removed from "en suite" leaving behind raised staples, toilet flush handle was practically useless and it appears this had been reported before, only 1 radiator operational. We vacated the property after 3 nights very disappointed with the whole package. Reported this to Coast & Country on 26 September and have had no comment from them. We have stayed in numerous properties in the area and this was very inferior in comparison.

We are very sorry you didnt find the cottage up to the standard you and ourselves expect - I have talked to the caretaker about your comments which will be rectified asap. Its such a shame as we have received such good feedback from this seasons visitors, - the gardener has also been asked to tidy what is needed. Property Owner

  • "We had a fabulous stay at Elworthy."

The cottage was just as we expected in a lovely quiet location and just a short walk into Salcombe. Everything we needed was provided. The garden was a little overgrown around the garden shed which made accessing the garden chairs a little difficult, and one of the slats on one of the seats of the garden table was loose and raised up when sat on. It did cause us a problem but would but could easily trap the fingers of the little people

We are pleased you enjoyed your stay at Elworthy. The problem with the garden seat was noted and is now repaired, and the gardener has told me he will cut back the hedges as soon as he has time to sort them. Thank you for your comments. Owner of the cottage. Property Owner

  • "We have just spent a week in Elworthy Cottage."

When we arrived the cottage was cold and smelt damp and musty. We opened the doors and windows which helped a little but there was no heating. The storage heaters were switched off and there were no logs for the fire. We turned the heaters on for the next day but by evening they were cold. There was a strong smell of fish in the kitchen which we think was caused by a problem with the fridge. The shower drainage was inadequate and overflowed into the toilet area. Everything just felt damp. The clothes which had been in a cupboard unworn are now being dried out at home. I realise that old cottages do not have dampproof courses but the lack of heating facilities could surely be remedied. I expect that if the weather had been hot and sunny we would not have needed heating, but this is England.

How disappointing to read your comments especially as we have had such good reviews. The cottage was occupied and cleaned up to and including the day you arrived so should not have smelt musty. There is normally a net of logs, so I will question why you didn't have any when you arrived. New modern and efficient heaters were installed recently. Property Owner

I thought it was perfect… Husband however grumbled about low beams/ doorways.. he’s tall. I don’t think low beams are mentioned in description. I realise this is often the case in old properties. If you like perfect peace and hilly walks, this is the place to go.

Elworthy is 17th century so as most cottages of that age the ceilings are lower by design, im sorry your husband found them a problem, its more than often an attractive feature which people seem to love. Yes, its very peaceful tucked away in Batson with just a 15min walk along the side of the creek to the hustle and bustle of Salcombe and its lovely beaches, walks, shops and pubs etc. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was idyllic."

Well equipped and a perfect base for enjoying Salcombe . Quiet surroundings and an easy 15 minute walk into Salcombe along Batson creek ( short steepish hill to negotiate on the way back up to the cottage but the rest of the walk is flat) . Morning coffee on the patio was lovely. The only thing we found was the king-size bed mattress was too soft for us but that's personal preference. The cottage was delightful though and we also hired the shepherd's hut which was very comfortable and cute. The outside loo was a bonus with 5 of us staying . Overall we had a lovely time and without hesitation we will return .

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your lovely feedback. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Elworthy Cottage, it sounds like you had a great holiday. Your feedback has been passed on to the owner who is thrilled with your comments, she has also informed us that the mattress will be replaced at the end of the season. • "The cottage is lovely, idyllically located, lovely and quiet at night time."

It has a visiting your gran homely feel to it with endearing features. However, no toilet upstairs was a pain, especially at night. The mattress could do with a change. For the price paid, a decent set of curtains wouldn't go amiss. The sofa is old, as well as the pillows. The shower overflows very quickly. A bath would be amazing to soak in. We had to call up and ask for extra bin bags- we had a 6 month old with us and naturally used more rubbish than a couple usually would, but then again if a family of 4 was staying there they would face the same difficulties. Same with the washing up liquid. Why so cheap with the basics? All just seemed a bit budget for the price and we left with the impression that is was a business that was a hinderance to someone rather than what we were hoping it would be; someone's beautifully maintained cottage in the heart of Devon that's both charming and functional. Oh and the bins hadn't been put out previously so when we came to leave the black bin was already full. Still happy with our stay, just a few niggly points that we were reminded of on a daily basis.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are thrilled that you loved Elworthy Cottage, it is in such a beautiful setting. We work very closely with our owners and caretakers so are disappointed to hear the matters you have raised. We have spoken with the owner who takes a lot of pride in her cottage and is saddened to hear you felt her business came across as a hindrance. She has taken your points on board and will certainly look into them. It can be difficult to offer a property to accommodate everyone’s taste as it is such a personal thing. However we really appreciate your review as we can then work to make it the best experience for all. We can only apologise you came across the nigles you did.
