About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.

“We arrived on a cold and dark November night.”

The property is situated off a dark lane with no street lamps. By the time we saw the sign for the property we had driven past the entrance especially as the post code took us to the local pub further down the road. There was then no lighting in the car park until you came to a set of steps when remote ones were triggered. Eventually we groped our way to the door. This was a common theme for the weekend. ...

Inside it was clean but cold. No heating was on, no instructions on the table, no spare key and eventually we found a torn off scrap of paper with a WiFi code purely by chance. That said it was cosy and comfortable once we settled in. The bathroom was full of rusty furniture such as a shower tidy, shelves and hooks; all cheap and easy to replace plus the grouting was filthy. Disappointing. Finally the microwave did not work. All in all not what I would expect for £140/night. We did have a nice weekend but felt you should know.
