  • "Kittiwake was a lovely modern house in a great position right next to the ocean."

However in certain areas it could have been cleaner. Around the cooker hob, there was also a dirty tray left in the oven and the mattress protector in the master bedroom was stained, and although the kitchen was well equipped it lacked a couple of small saucepans for a boiled egg, tin of peas etc, and a can opener that worked. There was also no welcome box.

We Arrived At The Property On Time ,The Cleaners Were There And We Had An Hours Wait. We Beleive No Extra Cleaning For Covid Had Been Done,Just A Basic Clean. Dust And Flies On Most Window Cills And Skirtings,Velux Window In Kitchen Full Of Cobwebs And Flies. To Us The Single Beds Are Only Suitable For Children, Not Adults. Shower On Top Floor ,Very Poor Flow Rate. All In All ,Great Holiday Accommodation, But We Think More Should Be Made Of The Very Poor Access Actually To Hallsands. The House Is In A Fantastic Position,But Due To The Access, We Think This Would Put Us Off Visiting Kittiwake Again,Which Is A Real Shame.

  • "Kittiwake was such a beautiful cottage in an absolute idyllic setting, and a stones throw from the beach."

The property was amazing, well equipped and beautifully presented throughout. Our days were spent relaxing on the terrace and decking and taking in the sea views. We loved that you could watch the waves from the lounge , and admire the green countryside from the kitchen ! Best of both worlds. There are amazing walks from the cottage, along the coastal path. One way takes you to Beesands Beach and a lovely stop for lunch. The other way takes in The Lost Village of Hallsands and over to Start Point Lighthouse, and down to Mattiscombe Sands . Our holiday was simply heaven, and can't wait to visit again.

  • "This house certainly exceeded my expectations in so many ways It was so comfortable and everything we needed was there, I was really impressed."

One point which let the house down was the amount of cobwebs and spiders! I did feel these could have been dealt with by the cleaners. Also the ensuite bathroom in the main bedroom wasn't particularly clean, the shower had black mould around the door and the room did smell of damp.

I realise with the current climate that you as a company are making a lot of money as is the owner! Cleanliness was a top priority as you stated in your Email . We visited this property last year, the cleanliness was very poor this year. Shower outlet disgusting, cupboard of bread products rotting and cracked glasses. I was asked by coast and country to provide photographic evidence which I did and heard nothing back. The house is so hot we complained about this last year and various others have complained but you still not able to turn The heating down..... it must cost the owners a fortune! It means that germs are breeding and it was extremely uncomfortable for everyone which meant none of us slept properly for a week. It is a beautiful property in a wonderful area. We also are just converting a barn for holiday letting purposes which I will properly manage myself as there just was not the attention to detail.

Thank you for letting us know about your recent stay at Kittiwake. We were sorry that the property was not presented to our usual high standards for your arrival. We did receive your email following your first night at the property, and replied offering the housekeeping team to re-attend, and requesting pictures to be sent to us. Unfortunately we didn't receive a response from you. Any issues should be reported to us as soon as possible ideally by telephone however where this is not possible please email us at info@coastandcountry.co.uk We also do have 24 hour out of hours lines for emergencies or issues including what you experienced with the heating as we would have been able to organise an engineer to resolve any problems. • "Such a beautiful home with stunning views."

Our Christmas dinner was perfect with no shortage of items needed in the kitchen. The home is very well laid out and the warmth was needed but at night a little too warm! We had dinner at the Church House Inn which was lovely, so definitely going back there ! The only slight issue was that we could not locate the first aid box "in the kitchen" when there was a minor 'chopping board accident' on Christmas day! Perhaps it's there somewhere but instructions just need to be a little more specific! Thank you for a wonderful Christmas retreat.

  • "This is a really nice cottage."

We have stayed In other Sykes Cottages where we have been greeted on arrival with a welcome pack of bread - often Devonshire Teas - tea coffee etc and often basic condiments. Sadly this Cottage came with no provisions. Not ordinarily a big deal but as this cottage is very remote - 25 minutes down one car hedged lanes to get to town and shops - some provisions would have been good. A coffee machine - Nespresso, or like, would also have been a nice touch. The listing also does not adequately describe the remoteness and the need to shop first. We had a number of emails with details for arrival but these too did not stress the remoteness. The Cottage itself and the location Are 5 Star. A little more effort from the owner would have produced an overall 5 Star rating.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review following your stay at Kittiwake. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and rate the cottage as 5 star. We passed your comments regarding the lack of an welcome pack on to the owner and are pleased to report that a basic refreshement pack will be provided from now on. We have also added notes to the travel directions to advise future guests to stock up on provisions en route. We hope that we can welcome you back to Hallsands again soon. Property Owner

  • "We had a problem gaining access but it was resolved by a call to the team."

I do think you should warn guests about the lane access as it is extremely narrow for at least the last mile to the property - it did have an impact on our stay. Accommodation suited our needs as a family we were warm and felt safe. Sadly the weather wasn’t on our side and we wished we had known about the Woodlands 7 day entry at the start of the holiday as we could have used the tickets during the week.

  • "What a beautiful location."

Perched on the side of the coast path, with broad views out to sea, it is a lovely spot. The house is well maintained, comfortable and clean. There were a few niggles - the heating was uncontrollably hot, the drains didn’t drain away quickly enough in the shower and the windows could have been cleaner, but these were minor in the scheme of things and did not stop us having a wonderful week.

  • "Absolutely divine stay."

The only criticism I have would be that the photography were not as good as the reality met on arrival and that I could not find a lemon juicer. Seriously a wonderful property and even if the weather was not at its best, the whole experience was close to magic. Now I regret saying all this, as I am concerned that it will not be free to rent often anymore! The view is stunning and the ensuite bathroom top quality. For those who think it is too remote from shops and coffees, well, this is exactly the appeal of this wonderful property and I would like to add that Waitrose did deliver to the cottage with great efficiency. some locals in a farm behind Hallsands also offered me organic eggs and life could not have been better. I tried to stay another week, but sadly, it was taken already.. I am looking forward to come back to this wonderful area and house. Thank you again for those who look after it so well.

What lovely feedback to receive. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time at Kittiwake. Hallsands is an idyllic place where you can get away from it all, and it seems that you managed to do just that! We look forward to seeing you again soon Property Owner

  • "This is a stunning holiday cottage."

It is beautifully furnished and very well equipped. A great holiday experience. My only negative comment would be that as it caters for families a stairgate would be advisable on the top floor.

About the location

HALLSANDS

Start Point 1.5 miles; Beesands 3 miles; East Portlemouth 5.5 miles; Kingsbridge 8 miles.

Hallsands is a small village near Start Point, one of the most southerly points on Devon’s coastline, near Salcombe in the beautiful South Hams area. The sheltered South Hams Peninsula is in 'deepest Devon', a pastoral landscape of flowering hedgerows and ancient sunken lanes, carved into by the richly wooded Avon and Dart Valleys. This quiet fishing village, with its dog-friendly, unspoilt beach, is situated next to the historic ‘old village’ of South Hallsands, just three miles from the popular Beesands Beach which has its own gastro pub and shop. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is decorated with white, pink and ochre thatched cottages, picturesque fishing ports such as Dartmouth, and is renowned for its stunning coastline, popular with yachting enthusiasts. Much of the clifftop land has been acquired by the National Trust, a haven for bird watchers and walkers who take advantage of the South West Coast Path, peppered with perfect picnic spots. Nearby, uncover the beauty of Blackpool Sands and Torcross, a historic site where the Normandy landings were practiced; explore the nature reserve at Slapton Ley, and stroll along Slapton Beach, feeling the soft sand between your toes. Park at East Portlemouth and catch the ferry across to the beautiful seaside town of Salcombe with its renowned estuary, or visit the Start Point Lighthouse, less than a mile away. Hallsands is a wonderful base for uncovering the unspoilt beauty of Devon and the South Hams, all year round.
