The elevated position provides open views of the countryside. A local woodland walk recommended by Charlotte is absolutely beautiful. In a great location for travel to an amazing beach at Saunton or to other locations such as Dartmoor and Buckfast Abbey. Thanks to Charlotte for lovely homemade biscuits. We didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back.

  • "We had a lovely holiday at Hedgelea - good communication from the owner, very helpful."

Hedglea is a very comfortable, clean bungalow set in beautiful grounds. Lovely walk along quiet lane to the woods and river - our dog loved this and so quiet there for her. The lane to Hedgelea is bumpy in parts but easily manageable and we found some very nice places to visit - Eggersford Station cafe, Fingle Bridge Inn, tea rooms in Belstone, Waterside garden centre, Kings Arms in Winkleigh - great Sunday roast. All good :) - thank you.

  • "Hedgelea was very well equipped and comfortable."

The views from the patio were stunning and we ate most of our meals outside, as we were blessed with wonderful weather. Lovely walk down by the river. But most of all we loved the peace and tranquility, the glorious abundance of nature, bird song and visits to the bird feeder of nuthatch, many varieties of tit, dunnock, robin, thrush etc and the little vole, occasionally glimpsed. Thank you Charlotte and family for sharing your wonderful Hedgelea with us.

  • "We had a lovely month at Hedgelea, the orginal features at the cottage helped to make it cosy and welcoming."

It was very quiet (which we prefer) in an idyllic situation with great views. We soon got used to the narrow Devon roads and didn’t find them a problem from North Tawton, we did not venture the other way. Our dogs loved it, lots of chasing balls up and down the driveway. Thank you Andrew and Charlotte for a memorable stay.

I believe the property is around 100 years old and it certainly retains many of the original features. However, it also offers all of the comforts to make your stay very relaxing. We were lucky with the weather and the highlight for us was enjoying BBQ’s on the patio with the most sensational views of the nearby rolling hills. This is a very special, old, comfortable cottage, in an isolated location, offering a truly wonderful experience. Absolute bliss.

It was clean, comfortable, tastefully furnished & had all we needed for a super self catering holiday. The garden was secure for our dog and the recommended walk down to the River Taw was great. The location was gorgeous, offering a “get away from it all” family break, which we really needed. We would most definitely consider booking Hedgelea again.

  • "This is our second time to this cottage and we love it."

If you are looking for a tranquil, peaceful week this is the place to go. The beds are SO comfortable and we just loved sitting outside. Again we were so lucky with the weather. Review: If you are looking for peace and quiet this is the place to go. It has beautiful views and all you can hear are the sheep and cows. It is isolated (which we love) but it is a drive to get anywhere. However, my husband cycled lots (which is great if you like hills!). The woods and stream a short walk away are idyllic and our dog loved playing in the water there. The garden is not dog proof as my dog repeatedly got out but it was not an issue for us. He just crawled under the gate to get back each time. There are so many lovely pubs to visit. The beach is a good hour's drive away so although they are absolutely lovely you need to allow 1 -1.30 hours depending on traffic. We love Hedgelea as it's so peaceful and a place you can truly relax in. But if you are wanting quick access to amenities then it's not the place for you as there is no quick way out. I loved it.

  • "Overall a lovely property in the middle of nowhere, which is perfect if you want to get away from everything but still has great wifi, which was an unexpected bonus."

Lovely walks from the doorstep, okish location for local amenities, with most places being at least 30mins away, which was expected. Garden is not very big, but there is a small enclosed area for dogs, but not much space if the kids want to play any games. I'd echo previous comments that the road leading to the property is very poor, you can access from the north or south, luckily for us our sat-nav took us in via the south because we arrived in darkness, had we used the north entrance, I think our car would have been wrecked. We tried the north route during the day and it was awful, massive potholes that you can't avoid, at one point the bottom of our car was scraping along the road, we were fortunate to avoid any major lasting damage, but we never used that route again.

The garden is a half acre plot as the photos depict. As previous reviews show, it is one of the glorious elements of Hedgelea; a children's play paradise. We have enclosed the front garden specifically for little children or dogs to give a secure area. There is also access to the meadow with long grass and winding pathways with plenty of trees for making camps! The half acre garden/meadow combination is very much one of the attractions of Hedgelea. There are two ways of coming into Hedgelea and if you follow the south route directions, which we have updated in your welcome pack, there are no issues with the road. The roads in Devon are, as you say, awful and we have been battling with the local council for seven years to get the northern approach to Hedgelea re-surfaced. Property Owner

Enjoyed our welcome flapjack and the cottage was well equipped, clean and cosy. Beds were all very comfortable and wifi was very good (and needed as this place is remote!). Access is quite tricky but we have a low sports car and didn’t have any issues as long as you’re careful driving to the property from the main road. Absolute quiet at night apart from owl hooting and cows munching in the fields that surround the house. Had best week of sleep ever. Thank you, we will return for sure!

It's really well equipped and very comfortable with some lovely original features. The patio and garden are excellent. The bath and shower do need attention. They fit in aesthetically, but are not practical. When having a shower you lose your balance due to the shape of the bottom of the bath and the shower curtain, again looks great, but sticks to you if you are any bigger than a size 8. Despite that we'd still go back in a heart beat. Perfect peaceful location, photos on website don't do it justice. NB: lanes to access cottage are very tight, don't take a large vehicle.

  • "The setting for the cottage was perfect."

It was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The WiFi was excellent, it had two high speed connections, one to casting to the tv and one for general use. A lovely cake and note recommending a local woodland walk for the us was very welcoming. An excellent base to explore or just somewhere to get away from it all. Plan to return.

She was on hand for any queries & we appreciated it. The house is in an idyllic spot, surrounded by fields & woodland, but holiaymakers do need to be aware that, in good weather, the tractors are out in the fields which encircle the house & gardens & the noise of the balers in particular can be heard throughout the house.

  • "A very wet October half term probably wasn’t the best time to be at Hedgelea."

Four people’s wet weather gear quickly filled available coat hooks but the house was warm, well equipped, with comfy beds and great views. The owners provided a welcome cake and lots of ideas for things to do, and were super-quick to sort out a heating issue part way through our stay. Cleanliness was exemplary. The ‘but’ comes from the very rural location and the openness of the property. I found access daunting - all routes are on very narrow, rutted, single track Devon lanes which made journeys in and out nerve wracking. I didn’t find the garden was ‘enclosed’ enough for dogs. There is stock fencing on some boundaries and a fence/gate on one side of the house, but the bank to the main road is not secure and one side of the house is completely open. My dog was able to get into the neighbouring field (luckily empty of animals) on arrival day so we had to keep her on a lead for the rest of our stay; responsible but not relaxing.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback, we spoke with the owner who says - Having spent seven years renovating Hedgelea and three years preparing the cottage each week for new guests we were so glad to hear you appreciated all our efforts inside the cottage. Regarding the enclosed garden, we will be adding a gate over the winter to make the immediate garden area fully enclosed so that dogs can be let off the lead and owners can relax. As for the Devon lanes and in particular the last half a mile or so as you approach Hedgelea, we agree whole heartedly that this stretch is in poor condition and we will continue to petition Devon Highways to improve the situation. Despite the points raised we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "The cottage itself was great - the access was dreadful and I am very disappointed that it wasn’t mentioned in the property information."

If the fact that two two ‘roads’ to the property were unsurfaced and very poor in condition, I wouldn’t have booked Hedgelea. The number of significant potholes have left my car bumpers damaged - a normal car cannot access these two roads without possible damage to the bumpers or underside of the car. I would like a response to this issue and to know what you are going to do to make this clear for future visitors - my email is jsandrews63@live.co.uk

Thank you for your feedback which we have spoken to the owner about and understand that they are in direct contact you regarding the points raised. On the owners instruction we have now added a note regarding the public highway condition, which remains to be out of their control, onto the website. It is very frustrating that this problem continues given the number of times we have reported this to Devon Highways. In the meantime, we continue to drive around the potholes without any damage. Very exciting garden and local walks for our little dog. So peaceful and secluded we had lots of bird and squirrel visitors during the week, as well as a couple of deer grazing in the field in front, and a lovely terrace to sit and watch from. The approaching twisting, narrow lanes took a bit of getting used to but we actually met only one car in our lane all week! Only two small issues, handshower only in the bath, and spring water had a slightly unpleasant smell, so bought large bottled water for drinking - so no problem. Overall a lovely place to stay for peace and quiet. *** Owner Response *** Thank you for leaving us some great feedback. We were concerned to hear about the water so had it re-tested immediately. Thankfully, it all came back 100% clear and safe, so our guests can continue to enjoy our local spring water. Otherwise we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay in this beautiful area.

The position is exceptional with beautiful views across the countryside, situated along a quiet lane hardly any traffic. We enjoyed a very restful and relaxed week, inside the cottage renovated very tastefully to a high standard but with all mod cons and lots of little extras. In fact we didn't venture further than the nearby villages as we were able to walk along the lane to woods and along the river (Tarka trail) with our little dog.
