"We just spent the weekend at the Dragon House for a family birthday."
What a great house. The bar area and pool room were the highlights for us - perfect for a party. Great hosting by Harvey - check in and check out was friendly and efficient. Will def be back. Thanks Harvey
"The property was brilliant and I highly recommend."
"A wonderful characterful property ideal for a group of friends or family, with a bonus of your own private bar!"
. We booked a party of 10 at short notice and the booking process and contact with the owner (Harvey), was seamless and very efficient. We all had a great time!
"Great place for a gathering of friends and family."
I held my 50th Birthday Weekend here with 16 of us. Plenty of space and bedrooms with ensuite. Quirky house with loads of character spent most of the time in the bar area in the evenings had a great atmosphere with lots of guests trying there hand as landlords. We had caterers in for a hassle free Saturday meal and they enjoyed using the kitchen with its catering ovens / dishwasher etc. The dinning room was just the right size too. The house is well used but very clean and tidy.
"Ideal venue for a multi generational get together ."
We celebrated my Fathers eightieth birthday with four generations. It was great to be all able to sit down together in the dinning room for all our meals, in total twenty one attended and we were all able to have private accomodation and the ability to find some space. The garden was also fantastic for the kids ( when the weather permitted). The bar area also provided an excellent provision for some with the older members able to escape to the cosy lounge.
"We are a group of 9 (mature) ladies enjoying a breakaway from normal routine."
This house was full of character and atmosphere, and the welcoming open fire and gas log fire which were lit for our arrival was lovely. The owner gave us a guided tour on arrival and explained how to work everything, and he was extremely pleasant. The Bar with the open fire was the clincher in our decision to come to Dragon House, but all the reception rooms were great, and the bedrooms were all large. The only thing I would mention is that some areas could do with a little TLC, but it was clean and comfortable and suited our requirements totally. If all the properties that Sykes suggest are as good as this, we will definitely be doing it again next year.
"Dragon House was absolutely fabulous."
We had 4 generations together for a whole week over Christmas and we all had the best time. The owner was friendly and and welcoming. We all loved every minute of our stay. X
"“A wonderful celebratory weekend at Dragon House."
” .. from the moment we arrived and met Harvey the owner - Harvey had been kind enough to light the log fire earlier - so we were really snug. All nineteen us sat comfortably in the characterful dining room later that evening for a noisy first night together supper. This was a surprise party weekend for my dads 80th birthday Dragon House is perfect for a large gathering - a well equipped kitchen made it easy to prepare meals. Some TLC and maintenance is needed throughout the property. We enjoyed sitting in the bar which we stocked ourselves playing games.
"Lovely relaxed feel to the house, It was perfect for a family get together"
"This house is fantastic for large family's or groups of people, it has lots of nooks and hidey holes all around, the grounds are great with loads of space for rounders etc young and old alike."
The house is what it says on the tin its a Grade 2 listed house with significant character. The kitchen is amazing great beer fridges!!! We enjoyed our stay, lots to visit in the area.
"Great place for a group of friends to spend time together"
"The owner of Dragon cottage was really helpful and very welcoming."
The property is full of character and comfortable. I have re-booked for next year already, thank you!
"A wonderful celebratory weekend at Dragon House."
.. from the moment we arrived and met Harvey the owner - the magic of the place started. Being shown around the quirky, but dignified house was an indicator of the fun ahead. By first evening, the dye was set as we gathered in the 'thatched pub'. Harvey had been kind enough to light the log fire earlier - so we were really snug. All twenty of us sat comfortably in the characterful dining room later that evening for a noisy first night together supper. This was a surprise party weekend for my husband's 60th Birthday... I could write so much more about this weekend, but suffice to say - Dragon House is perfect for a large gathering - a well equipped kitchen made it easy to prepare meals, and the fastest dishwasher in the world to clean afterwards. Everywhere spotless upon arrival too. I am now working out an excuse to return!
"It was a lovely place to have a family celebration."
"It was perfect for what we wanted, thank you."
"The Dragon House has been a fantastic weekend, very unusual and fun property a little bit of TLC required here & there but a fantastic location and really enjoyed the facilities especially having our own bar - the boys loved it!"
The beautiful dining room was fantastic for our afternoon tea, and having a welcome lit fire was most appreciated!
"The Dragon House was a brilliant venue for a surprise birthday party."
It's quirky, olde worlde charm was fantastic and we spent most of our time in the bar! The property had everything we needed for our weekend of celebrations. The garden was lovely and we were blessed with nice weather so were able to enjoy breakfast on the terrace and an afternoon drink on the lawn. Being a former hotel, it had plenty of space so everyone could relax and the kids loved the little games room on the second floor.
"The house was a little tired and needed some TLC especially the mattresses on the beds as we had to swap one over with another room that wasn’t used and one of the super kings had no springs at all in the middle of the mattress, so it felt like you was lying on a board."
There was also no stream at the bottom of the garden as stated in listing.
"Whilst the accommodation met our needs and was reasonably comfortable, the state of repair was poor."
We understand the building is old and rustic but it was the fixtures an fittings which let it down, a bit more maintenance would make a huge difference.
"The accommodation was comfortable for our group of 14 and as Dragon House was a former hotel it was novel to have the run of the place without the normal restrictions of a hotel."
It was certainly spacious and once we'd mastered the industrial sized dishwasher (so much faster than the norm) we could spend more time in the bar. The one let down was that we would have expected soap to have been provided in our bathrooms but a quick trip to Lidl sorted that out.
"Great place for a family party"
"Our bed extremely comfortable but another wasn't, squeeked constantly!"
Property was quite chilly on arrival, but once we shut windows & put extra heaters on it was fine. Loved the lounge, dining room & bar, great for larger parties. Would go again
"The property was stunning and the owner was extremely helpful and accommodating."
It was the perfect venue for a family celebration. In particular we enjoyed the bar area where we had beer on tap arranged for us by the owner, and the rest we fully stocked ourselves. It was great to be able to light a log fire and drink in front of it. We also made full use of the large dining room, and great catering kitchen to host a murder mystery dinner party for 20!! and a family carvery Sunday lunch. We also used the 2 annex rooms and the adjoining but separate Wisteria Cottage to ensure that we had enough room for all the family. A really fabulous experience.

About the location
Minehead 3 miles.
Dunster is a popular tourist village near the North Somerset coast and is a largely unspoiled spot: the centre of the town retains many old buildings which hug the winding cobbled streets. The whole village is dominated by the castle on its hill but the focal point of the High Street is the picturesque Yarn Market, a covered area built in 1609 particularly to accommodate the wool traders and other cloth merchants. Inside Dunster castle there are fine plasterwork ceilings and the extensive terraced and landscaped gardens contain many rare shrubs and trees, and offer marvelous views out to sea, and towards the Quantocks. For those who enjoy exploring the countryside, Dunster is within the Exmoor National Park and there are plenty of footpaths leading onto the surrounding hills of Grabbist and walks into Dunster’s Deer Park at the foot of the castle. Dunster is well served with traditional inns, individual shops and interesting places to explore including the working 18th century watermill. West Somerset’s premier resort of Minehead is less than three miles away and has golden sandy beaches, seaside attractions for the visitor, and plenty of cafes, shops and bistros.
