“This was the fourth time we had visited this cottage so we knew what to expect in what is a favourite place.”

Two minor criticisms however, both relevant to Bovey Castle management: 1). Our fridge door fittings were missing resulting in limited storage capacity. Mention to Bovey Castle employee resulted in our being told that there was not much that could have been done about that. 2). Bovey Castle’s Reception seemed understaffed and ill-prepared to deal with us on top of an influx of a vintage Rolls Royce rally and managed to misdirect our Waitrose delivery driver. Had it not been for the driver’s diligence and pro activity we would have been left without our groceries for the week until Waitrose could get back to us whenever. For a top class country hotel we feel its service in these two areas was sub-par.

The property

This unique, detached gatehouse stands proudly at the entrance to luxury hotel Bovey Castle and invites you to enjoy the fabulous hotel facilities, including the indoor pool, spa (treatments extra), gym, steam room, two restaurants and stunning 18-hole golf course.

Built in 1907, the gatehouse is quirky and unusual, with stylish granite work surfaces twinkling amid the black walls of the kitchen, whilst mirrored walls bring glamour to the sitting room with its views across the picturesque golf course, and supper around the glass table in the dining room, surrounded by mullion windows, is a fitting way to end a day being pampered at the spa or walking the slopes of nearby Dartmoor.

Upstairs, the two bedrooms are light and airy, with a dressing room with the double, perfect if you're getting ready for dinner at the hotel restaurant, and choice of shower-room and bathroom.

The hotel has several pretty Dartmoor villages to visit within easy reach, including North Bovey, Manaton and Moretonhampstead, and the Miniature Pony Centre is just along the road for a heady dose of cuteness.

The scenic driving route across the middle of Dartmoor can be accessed just outside the hotel gates, and will give you fabulous views of Dartmoor's tors, heather hills and valleys and moorland sheep, cattle and ponies.
