  • "A fabulous property."

The best equipped and cleanest property I have stayed in. We loved all the different seating areas outside, you could move around the garden with your tea and cake as the sun moved. A lovely touch was when the owner rang to check that everything was okay and to see if we had any problems. We would most certainly return for another stay.

Thank you for the lovely feedback. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Appletree Cottage. The different areas in the garden come into their own as the sun moves around and it sounds like you made the most of all the different seating areas we've create around the garden. Our wonderful housekeeper, Cheryl, does an amazing job, as does Amanda and her team of gardeners. We'll be sure to pass on your comments and you'd be most welcome to come again. • "We loved staying at Appletree Cottage - a quintessential thatched cottage with such a pretty garden."

It was very comfortable and equipped with absolutely everything we needed for a truly home-from-home feel. A good internet connection too! The owners gave us a lovely welcome with a gift of wine, chocolates and flowers on the kitchen table, milk in the fridge and even a phone call on our first evening to make sure we had arrived safely and had everything we needed. The location provided a great base for exploring Dartmoor with a wide variety of interesting historical places to visit, lovely walks at nearby Parke NT and beautiful moorland scenery to admire.

Thank you for the lovely feedback. We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Amanda and the gardeners do a wonderful job to make sure something interesting is always happening in the garden throughout the year and that birds and butterflies come to visit. We hope you'll come again and you'd be most welcome. David and Hilary Property Owner

Extremely well equipped. The owners couldn’t have been more helpful, and the welcome pack was much appreciated. Only the weather was less than perfect, but the coziness of the cottage made up for all the rain!

Thank you for the lovely feedback. We're always delighted to hear that guests have enjoyed their stay and very glad that the cottage was nice and cozy for you during the poor weather. When it rains in Dartmoor, it can certainly rain! Hopefully the weather won't put you off another visit and you'd be most welcome at any time. David and Hilary Property Owner

  • "What an absolute gem !"

All mullioned windows & exposed beams, nooks & crannies, very tastefully furnished, and with literally EVERYTHING required for a peaceful & relaxing holiday. Having stayed at many properties in the South- West, we can honestly say that this is THE most delightful cottage we have had the pleasure of booking ! Ideally situated for visiting the many places of interest in Devon, but if you are so inclined, you could easily spend a week here just chilling ! The gardens have several seating areas & if in season, the apple trees will provide you with a readily available crop of beautiful fruit ! It is really secluded & quiet, literally all you can hear is birdsong. Sitting in the window seat was delightful, especially early morning/ late evening. The cottage was exceedingly clean & tidy on arrival, & credit must be paid to the housekeeper. Also, the welcome wine & chocolates were greatly appreciated, & a nice gesture. As was the call from David ( the owner ) to check that everything was to our satisfaction on the first night of our arrival. We could find NOTHING to fault ( how many places could you say this about ? ) & we would thoroughly, & without hesitation, recommended this property. Be warned though - the lane in & out of the hamlet is VERY narrow & not for the faint-hearted, but easily negotiable IF you take it cautiously & with consideration for the locals ! In summary - 10/10 from us !

Thank you so much for this really lovely and thoughtful review. We try to make sure our guests enjoy themselves and have everything they could want from a Devon cottage. The birds are wonderful, even though they steal our thatch, and over the years we've learned where the sun falls in the garden during the day and made sure that there are plenty of places to just sit and relax. We don't know what kind of variety of apples we have but they are tasty and coming in late August or September has the benefit of being able to pick them straight off the tree. We hope you'll return again and will enjoy Appletree just as much as the first time. David and Hilary Property Owner

  • "An absolute gem of a find."

Yes the drive up could be off putting to some but the result of total peace and tranquillity is worth it. Fabulous wrap around garden to sit and relax in if you get the weather! Fantastic view from the kitchen window of the field over the road with the cattle. Owners very attentive, it is by far, the the best equipped cottage we have stayed in. Bovey Tracy is just far enough to walk down into and enjoy the lovely cafes and park. Will stay here again.

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay in Appletree and thank you for posting this feedback. It's lovely to see the fields, and also how they change over the seasons. We've improved the different seating areas in the garden in the past year so that you can get the morning sun in one place and the evening sun in another. You'd be very welcome to return at any time. Thank you for your lovely feedback. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Appletree. Hopefully you didn't have to do too much sewing and very glad that you found the needle and thread! It's comfortable, warm, well equipped and stylishly furnished. The garden is a peaceful delight and we loved watching the many different birds that visited daily. The parking is a little tight, as mentioned in other reviews, but we managed fine in our Ford Focus. We hope to return in the future as there are still lots of nearby places we would like to explore. Thank you David and Hilary for your warm welcome

Thank you for the lovely feedback. We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay in Appletree Cottage. The birds certainly enjoy the garden, though they also steal our thatch. But it's give and take and we're happy to share the garden with them in return for some singing! During the year we also have a wide range of butterflies and moths coming to visit so something is always going on in the garden no matter which month it is. Thank you also for taking good care of Appletree during your stay and we hope to see you again. David and Hilary Property Owner

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our holiday at the beautiful Appletree Cottage."

The information pack that we received prior to our arrival was the most comprehensive we have ever seen and provided extensive details on the home, equipment, directions, local area and much more. The owners clearly want to ensure that their guests have the best holiday possible and were only too pleased to help in any way. The house really felt like a home, and it was spotless. The garden is beautiful and the location was perfect for us - we enjoyed trips into Dartmoor, to Paignton Zoo and spent an enjoyable rainy day exploring the World of Marbles and The Jolly Roger in Bovey Tracey. Returning to Appletree Cottage at the end of each day was a joy and it was a privilege to be able to stay in this beautiful thatched cottage. Our son particularly enjoyed the large window seats, where he spent time each morning reading. Thank you too for the beautifully laid out welcome - the attention to detail in this home was second to none. We would certainly recommend Appletree Cottage.

The owners are excellent communicators and very much cared that our holiday was comfortable. They made us feel welcome with a gift of Prosecco & milk in the fridge. There were clear instructions for everything, in fact we have stayed in many holiday houses but this was the easiest and most user friendly set up we've encountered. The cottage was clean and very well kitted out, the kitchen was easy to use with good quality appliances & cooking equipment. The garden was so very pretty, as one might expect of a rural Devon thatched long house, with roses round the door and lots of little spaces in the garden to capture the sun! The property is so peaceful and we really did feel at home...we were sorry to leave but we hope to return next year. Thank you once again to Hilary & David, who are lovely people, conscientious, & checked we were OK after our late arrival. :-) PS. Recycling the rubbish is always a tricky subject in an area one doesn't know! We recommend sussing it out sooner rather than later & don't leave it till the last minute like we did...with the usual head-scratching!!

There is a large well equipped kitchen where we ate and it would be a real challenge to find anything to be critical of, it was really lovely. When we stayed in early June 2019 the garden was even more beautiful than shown in the photographs and anyone interested in flower gardens will love it. About the location

BOVEY TRACEY

Newton Abbott 6.5 miles; Teigmouth 10 miles; Exeter 15 miles

Nestled in the valley of the River Bovey is this stunning little town known as "The Gateway to the Moor". Bovey Tracey got its name from the meandering river that flows through it, with 'Tracey' representing the family that were the lords of the manor after the Norman Conquest. It has a great history with heavy involvement in the English Civil War which resulted in the name of the town's pub "The Cromwell Arms" which serves real ale and good food. The history of the town can be discovered in the Heritage Centre, with the Dartmoor National Park Authority also nearby. Bovey Tracey offers a selection of shops and cafés along with the stunning Mill Marsh Park and the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery which offers guided tours. The town comes just outside of the Dartmoor National Park which provides seemingly endless walking and cycling paths along with incredible scenery. The market town of Newton Abbot sits nearby, offering a fantastic day out with charming buildings and a good range of amenities. The beautiful city of Exeter is also within driving distance, and if a day at the seaside is what you're after then take a trip to Teignmouth.

Note: BBQs are not permitted due to the thatched roof. Short breaks are not available.
Due to the changes in level in the terraced garden, this cottage is not suitable for young children or those with limited mobility.
Parking at the rear of the property is accessed via a narrow lane.
Reduced rent for smaller groups up to 2 people - available all year. Note: For any holiday starting between 16th September and 27th May, a heating supplement of £35.00 will be added to the cost of your holiday.
