  • "A lovely cottage, well appointed and in a good position to access all of Brixham and enjoy the views from the balcony."

As others have mentioned the approach to the cottage by car is a little tricky. We have a full sized family saloon and that was tight, but no way impossible. Gulls are noisy, but once again we knew that from previous reviews, but that was offset by watching the comings and goings of the Trawlers in the harbour. Try to book the tour at the fish market - it was brilliant!

Very comfortable with great views of the harbour and sea. I would say able bodied people as there are some steep steps up to the cottage and a little noisy at times through the night with the fish market. However, we had a great time and return.

  • "The views are unbeatable however I do think that some of the write up should reflect the reality of this property."

Kitchen is small and needs a deep clean , the fridge is not og adequate size for a weeks worth of groceries. The stairs to the property and in the property need to be described better than they are they are plentiful snd steep. The bathroom also needed a deep clean as mould around the shower tray and door. The misy important thing about the write up should be the noise from the fish market and the birds nesting in the roof of the property. If you are ok with noise at night then great but if you’re not you should know in advance. Sorry this seems critical but just trying to be honest the holiday was still nice but I wouldn’t recommend this property to any one I know .

Thank you for your feedback. Brixham is a fully working fishing port. The noises from the Fish Market and the seagulls can be heard all over town. There is a picture of the kitchen on the website so the size would have been apparent before booking. It has a full size under the counter refrigerator which should be more than adequate for the 2 people in your party. The kitchen and bathroom were deep cleaned at the end of May. The owner came to the property the week after you and found no evidence of mould in the shower. The freezer compartment door of the fridge was not shutting properly and is being addressed. The steps are described as plentiful and steep - which is what they are and it would be difficult to describe them more clearly. Pictures of the internal stairs are on the website. Had you contacted us during your stay, we would have been happy to help with any issues. Property Owner

We were aware of the three floors inside the house but were not aware of the steps up to the front door which were quite steep. However my 89 year old husband coped with them remarkably well but maybe it should be mentioned in the details of the let. No other complaints and lovely views.

Hi there, the website does state that the property may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility. The main stairs are also pictured. We do find this to be sufficient info for guests, but our reservations team are on hand for further questions. - The Owner Relations Team Property Owner

Had a splendid week here in March. The cottage is great, has everything you could think of in the kitchen, plenty of cutlery and crockery. The bathroom is clean and warm, I agree the bedroom is a dream, wonderful views and comfy bed. we were lucky with the weather so even used the balcony for a beverage or two. Great location with perfect views. PS. We had no problem with seagulls they made the perfect backdrop

  • "As other reviewers have said - be sure to read the listing for Blue Horizon so as not to be surprised on arrival - except perhaps by the simply amazing views from virtually every window which you might not be prepared for."

The property was originally a fisherman’s cottage, close to the the working harbour - Brixham is still a working fishing port with all the associated sights and sounds that are part of that canvas. Previous comments about the parking are correct - and some cars are not ideally suited to using the space - especially if lower to the ground as there is a danger of scraping the underside of the car. There is either long stay parking (£8.50/24hrs - Sept 21) or free on road parking nearby which we used as do many locals. Arranged over three floors the cottage is well equipped, and proved to be an excellent base from which to explore this part of South Devon - on foot, by sea and by car. The WiFi was excellent and the SmartTV and DVD player were appreciated. There was plenty of hot water for showering, towels were provided.

So many beautiful walks without needing to drive. Cottage is stunning with some amazing views from the windows and the balcony. Would highly recommend staying here, we are hoping to book again for later this year/early next. As stated in the description, this property has a lot of steps, some very steep and parking was entertaining, for me (not my husband). Alternative pay and display parking is available in a short work, if you would prefer. Ensure to read the property details well before booking. Thank you to the owners for a really lovely, comfortable, beautiful escape away.

A patio table would be nice on the slabbed area at the top of the steps also a blind in the dining room would help to make it more private although it is a shame to shut out the excellent views. Would recommend this cottage facilities were excellent, fantastic views from every window.

  • "On arrival to the cottage we found it very easy to find and simple to gain entry via the key safe and information supplied."

The cottage was very clean and the view from the dining room on the ground floor was striking. The kitchen was compact but there was everything you could possibly want in terms of utensils, pots, pans, dish washer, washing machine and lots of crockery including various glasses. The stairs to the 1st floor are steep and narrow so be warned! The bathroom is excellent with a bath and a shower and is quite big for a cottage. The living room with TV and two sofas was brilliant, I said that the view from the dining room was striking but, from the living room and balcony it is awesome. The two bedrooms were spacious with excellent views and the beds extremely comfortable. I will say, you MUST read the description regarding the steep steps from the harbour. the first flight of 29 steps from street level is like a staircase followed by about 8 gently rising steps followed by about 8 more steep steps. Then there are more steps to the door and more again inside. We were a party of 60 somethings and managed fine but, please don't go here and complain about access as it is in the description. All in all the cottage is first class and the views are outstanding. Having said all of this if you have a car, the parking bay is only a few yards from the gate and apart from shopping it is quite feasible to spend an entire week sitting on the balcony (weather permitting of course). Would I recommend the property? You bet!

Location of property spot on Views from property amazing on the listing it doesn't look that good so get ready to be surprised take a pair of binoculars could watch the grey seals in the bay watching the boats come and go on the balcony Bed was great steps to property a challenge but it's Brixham Recommended to owners Put solid floors or laminate floors in dinning room and living room it wouldn't make it feel cold as a customer I was concerned about wet shoes dirty shoes on cream carpets scrubbed the balcony to get the dirt and Moss off so we didn't thread it on the carpet there is loose tiles in bathroom and the sofas in the lounge I wouldn't give it away its dirty and worn Please look at these I would pay more to stay you have a nice property but it could be GREAT

Thank you for completing your feedback. The views from the balcony and around Brixham are stunning. On the website we do mention that there is a flight of steep stone steps which bring you to the front patio and entrance of the cottage. As the property is a fisherman's cottage, the owners chose the cream carpet downstairs, to help keep it light and warm, especially with the stone walls, solid or laminate floors wouldn't give a feeling of coziness and warmth. A shoe rack is provided just inside the front door of the property and guests are asked to remove their shoes upon entering. The sofas have been checked and have been deep cleaned. The balcony was found to be clean and the balcony furniture is brand new. The tiles in the bathroom have been checked and none were found to be loose Property Owner

  • "Even though it is made quite clear in the listing, I cannot stress enough the matter of accessibility."

Do not under estimate the matter of the stairs, both up to the cottage and in the cottage. And also take the advice about backing down the road to park..... Aside from that, the location has the most stunning views. The bed is wonderfully comfortable, albeit the generator at the fishery building was not always conducive to a good night's sleep. Location is great for local amenities. Balcony is wonderful place to spend time watching the activity in the harbour and catching the sun.

  • "Location of the property is excellent, just behind the main street."

The road to the property is VERY narrow so if you have a big car like us be careful. The property is on 3 levels with the kitchen on the ground floor with the dining room. Bedrooms on the top floor have fantastic views across the harbour and are comfortable. The main issue we would say would be some parts of the cottage need updating or a very deep clean. The sofas are dirty, the heated towel rail in the bathroom is badly rusted at the bottom and the floor needs re-grouting as there are a lot of loose tiles. Window frames around the property were full of cobwebs and grime. Dining room on the ground floor needs laminate flooring not carpet, and needs brightening up as it’s a small area with very dark furniture in it. Kitchen is small but more than adequate with new cupboards and appliances which is a plus. The furniture on the balcony is old and rusted so we didn’t use it which is a shame as it would be a superb place to sit on an evening and relax watching the boats come and go. Overall, this property could be so much better given some attention and thought. Location 10/10, cleanliness 3/10.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback following your recent stay at Blue Horizon. We've spoken with the owner who has asked us to cover the points mentioned in order to help yourselves and reassure future guests. We always carry out an annual post season clean of our sofas, carpets and soft furnishings and aim to that very shortly following a very busy season. We also plan to replace the heated towel rail and the garden furniture. We investigated your mention of loose tiles and were unable to find any loose floor tiles. Window frames were cleaned at the end of July. We made the decision to lay carpet in the dining room mainly for the warmth this can offer and have no plans to change this at present. Despite the points raised we are pleased you enjoyed the fantastic location of our property. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was in a fantastic location, very comfortable and ideally situated for exploring Brixham."

The trickiness of parking, which is made clear in the instructions, cannot be overestimated, and we in fact did not use the car from the day we arrived until we left. But there is so much to do in and around Brixham, either on foot, or reachable by bus or boat that this didn’t matter at all. There are a few aspects which could be tidied up or replaced - such as a rusty microwave and bathroom radiator - and more use could be made of the outside aspects of the property, balcony and around the front door, but none of these detracted from what was a lovely week in Devon.

Brixham is a good base for touring the area. There are just two negatives that I think would be useful feedback - there was no welcome pack and if that had been explained we would have prepared for it. The property

Set close to Brixham harbour and town centre, the elevated position providing captivating harbour views, Blue Horizon is a delightful two bedroom cottage, set across three floors.

Character features including exposed stone walls and timber beams a nod to the history of this cosy fisherman's cottage that has been tastefully refurbished and will have great appeal as a family or romantic getaway.

A flight of steep stone steps bring you to the front patio and entrance of the cottage, where immediately you will appreciate the super views afforded from this sweet and welcoming seaside cottage.

The charismatic dining room furnished with an oak dresser adorned with pretty polka-dot crockery leads through into a modern neat kitchen where views to the harbour can be enjoyed whilst preparing meals.

An open tread winding staircase takes you to the first floor living room with patio doors opening onto a sunny balcony, the best position to relax and enjoy the comings and goings of the fishing boats in the harbour.

Amply proportioned the family bathroom is modern with bath and separate shower.

A staircase to the second floor reveals two lovely bedrooms both with sea and harbour views.

Tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac, you have worry free parking on a narrow drive across from the property, however reversing down the street is the best way to access the driveway due to lack of turning space.

A short walk down a series of steps will lead you to the harbour and town centre of Brixham, a vibrant fishing town with cafes, restaurants and plenty of shops.

Enjoy Breakwater beach voted one of the cleanest Blue Flag beaches on the English Riviera or walk the coastal footpath through Battery Gardens to Fishcombe Cove or further on Churston Cove, both picturesque coves ideal for kayaking or swimming and often quieter in Summer months.

Take the ferry to Dartmouth or Torquay or enjoy a day trip to Greenway, the former home of Agatha Christie.

About the location

BRIXHAM

Dartmouth 5 miles; Paignton 6 miles; Torquay 8 miles.

Brixham is a working fishing harbour located on the southern side of Torbay, the area known as The English Riviera, famed for its sunny mild climate all year round. The focal point of the harbour is a life size replica of The Golden Hind, Sir Francis Drake’s ship. The prettiest part of Brixham has small cottages in hilly narrow winding lanes leading to the harbour where all the activity is centred. Home to Britain’s largest fishing fleet which regularly lands their catch in the harbour, Brixham fish market sells to major restaurants in the UK. Brixham is the ideal destination for a traditional holiday with many family attractions around Torbay including two Blue Flag beaches, Paignton Zoo and many regattas and maritime events throughout the year. There are a host of safe cycle trails in the area, the South West Coastal Path and some of the best golf courses in the region. A good mix of relaxation or action, to suit all ages, where you are never far from the sea.
