Location: *Good location for exploring North Devon. Facilities: * £59.99 for entertainment pass for a 2 bed chalet. *Indoor pool was 0.9m deep and outdoor pool 1m so not much swimming to be done for adults. *9 yr old did enjoy the outdoor pool and flume when it was open. *Extra fees for timetabled pool activities such as inflatables, which we did not bother with having already paid quite a substantial amount to 'swim' in shallow pools (entertainment passes also covered access to evening entertainment but we were not wanting to use this). * Obviously this has nothing to do with owner but may be informative information for future guests as the main Parkdean site fails to mention pool sizes too. Chalet: *The chalet is described by Sykes as 'fresh'. The glossy web photos make it look welcoming and clean but close up there are large cracks in the walls in both bedrooms. The markings on the knobs for the hob have worn away. *The shower has low pressure and randomly changes from cold to scalding hot. Hardly getting ready in style, Sykes and not ideal for using on children. * The lounge furniture is neither cosy nor leather. Very firm and uncomfortable with no upper back/neck support for anyone over 4ft - disappointing after busy days out. *Our main expectation was being able to relax and be well rested on holiday. This was not possible as the main double bed has a mattress that sinks in the middle when two adults lay upon it, pushing up the sides, forcing the couple into the centre of the mattress. I tried to sleep in my son's bottom bunk but was unable to, later discovering it was the same mattress but in a single size. We had no sleep for the first two nights. I contacted Sykes after the second night to be told comfort was 'subjective'. Sykes contacted the owner who apparently said it was our personal opinion and that she wasn't going to replace the mattress as there was nothing wrong with it. I didn't expect the mattress to be immediately replaced but some suggestion for a resolution would have been nice. I rarely had any mobile signal or Wifi at the chalet or in the Clubhouse so did spend a bit of time, frustratingly, on days out trying to sort this via email. My last email on the fourth day from Sykes said the owner would not be providing us with a memory foam mattress as the property was a holiday let. At NO point had I asked for a memory foam mattress. I sent Sykes an email repeating that I did not expect an immediate bed replacement but that the bed provided was unsuitable and having resigned ourselves to sleeping on the mattress on the lounge floor for the rest of the holiday, I requested some form of recompense. 4 days later, I have no reply. *Paying £600 to not be able to use a bed or bedroom in holiday accommodation is something we find unacceptable. Website reviews of that particular mattress give it 1 star out of 5 and suggest it is not suitable for couples. Sykes make promises about comfort and home from homes but have then hidden behind their contract that they are merely a booking agent when we've had an issue. In effect the response we got was 'sorry and put up with it'. We have stayed in many hotels and self catering accommodations and have never had an issue where two individuals find a bed intolerable and have to sleep on the floor. Two positives of the accommodation is that towels and linen are provided and that the kitchen is well stocked. Overall, we would not visit this particular chalet or holiday park again and we would not use Sykes for future holidays based on this experience.
