  • "We all loved our week at Yelfords."

It’s a beautiful property with outstanding views. It truly was home from home. Extremely comfortable and well equipped. Another week creating memories in one of our favourite parts of the country. It was perfect for our group of 4 adults and 2 well behaved dogs. If we wanted to be very picky, it would have been nice to have been provided with a couple more tea towels. Also availability to buy more logs there instead of having to buy them when we were out would have been great. We really enjoy walking from home so a special trip was required to collect more logs as we enjoyed the log burner in the evenings. Talking of local walks, there were two of us recovering from knee and foot surgery. The immediate area and the walks into Chagford involve some unavoidable long, steep, hills. I don’t believe this was made clear on the listing and it may be too much for others who are looking forward to walking into the nearest town. We have holidayed with Sykes for many years now in the Lake District, The Peak District and in Dartmoor - this was one of the best properties we have stayed in. Thank you for making our week so special.

Thank you for your complimentary review. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and greatly appreciate you taking the trouble to leave the cottage so clean. Tea towels, we can do something about and will supply more in future. Thank you for the suggestion. The hills are a little more difficult to deal with. They make us puff too. But we will make sure it is mentioned in the listing. As to the logs, we are happy to provide a complementary basket to start the stay, but as we run a business and are sometimes called away, we can’t guarantee availability of logs. Consequently, we feel it is better to be clear, so that customers are not disappointed. Property Owner

  • "The property is well situated for the moors and lovely walks, however it is on a very narrow road and the run to and from the village to access the wider area is a very adventurous journey."

We found the property to be clean and tidy, our only complaints would be the lounge furniture needs renewing and the beds were very very firm, also we found the kitchen ovens were very low down.

Thank you for your kind comments about the cottage location and the easy access it provides to the moor. Tranquility, beautiful views and moorland locations in Dartmoor inevitably involve some single lane travel. However this is only a mile and a half of road with some 20 passing places. The sofas in the lounge are aged vintage soft leather with plenty of wool throws to make you comfortable. With a cottage as fully booked as ours, we cater for many dozens of holiday makers every year, each with a different preference for bed firmness. We have found that most people prefer medium to firm mattresses, so we have opted for this standard. Range cookers and AGAs are the norm in country cottages, and while they do not include a high-level oven, this is clearly identified in the photographs of the cottage and should come as no surprise. • "We had a wonderful stay at Yelfords Cottage."

The house and surroundings are so peaceful and beautiful, with access straight onto the moors and Mariners Way footpath from the back of the owners fields. The house is beautifully decorated and clean, with absolutely everything you could need for a stay away. The garden is fully enclosed for children and dogs and if you are quiet you will get visits from the local wildlife (deer, coockoo, ducks on the pond etc) . Mr and Mrs Caine were very friendly and helpful and told us to contact them at the main farmhouse if we needed anything but gave us our privacy also. The house (in my opinion) is in the perfect spot… the middle of nowhere but close enough to drive to the local village of Chagford and within 30 mins of most locations within Dartmoor. Lots of walks nearby and also lots of activities for the more adventurous if that’s what you are looking for. We wouldn’t hesitate to return, a true hidden gem.

Thank you for your kind review. We always enjoy having people stay who appreciate the peace, the tranquility, the views and the walks. Thank you for leaving the place clean. Property Owner

We visited in late May 2021 and found the owners to be very friendly and helpful - greeting us and showing us around the lovely, well-equipped cottage - detailing the appliances and describing walks that started from our doorstep. From that point, they were unobtrusive, but fast to respond if we contacted them with any queries. After each day’s excursion, we would dine, play board games in the lounge or have barbecues in the sunlit courtyard - often watching huge buzzards soaring over the hills and woods of our scenic surroundings. We must have covered 70km+ on foot exploring the north east area of Dartmoor and it was great to return to a beautiful, light and spacious cottage with fantastic views and fascinating watercolour paintings that appear to have been painted by the owners or their family. We do not hesitate to recommend Yelfords Cottage as a wonderful place to stay and we would happily book future stays there. Christiana Royal Wootton Bassett

There was nothing really wrong with Yelfords Cottage and the owners were very helpful. But I felt the furnishings were quite dated and the decorations were tired. I'd also like to say that since Sykes Cottages purchased Helpful Holidays, the level of service has plummeted. Dealing with HH was always a pleasant experience. The phone was invariably picked up immediately and the people I spoke to were bright, friendly and very familiar with the properties on their books. The (Sykes Cottages) customer experience is now totally different. It has all gone "a bit corporate". I no longer get the Friends & Family discount of 5% that I used to value with HH. I've just spent six minutes waiting in a telephone queue, after ploughing through various numerical "options" on the telephone answering system, only for the phone to be picked up in a call centre somewhere and told that they couldn't really help me because of the GDPR requirements .
