  • "The decor and the original features in the open plan, upstairs area makes for a pleasant relaxing living and dining space with excellent sea views."

The downstairs bedrooms are spacious and have comfortable beds and good quality linen. The ensuite bathroom would benefit from a shelf for toiletries and a holder for toothbrushes and a towel rail and a soap holder in the shower. The inside of the property is clean. All the other 4 star properties we’ve stayed in provide hand soap, bin bags, foil and cling film but there was only one soap in one of the bathrooms and none of the other items. It was also very unclear as to what we had to do with the rubbish as there was no bin at the back as stated in the visitor pack. The instructions for the recycling were also incorrect and we put it out on the wrong day. The main negative of the basement bedrooms is the view from the windows. Both rooms look out onto steps and these are dirty and neglected, with overgrown vegetation presenting a trip hazard on the steep steps at the back of the property. These spaces need to be cared for and painted white to counteract the lack of natural light and feeling of dinginess in these rooms. The steps both front and back do not give a good first impression of the property and the garden area bears no resemblance to the lovely garden space depicted in the photographs. Dirty windows also contribute to the feeling of dinginess. The large number of steep steps to the rear of the property, and the steps down to the front of the property, make it unsuitable for those with mobility problems or young children. Parking at the rear of the property is excellent but was difficult to find, especially as we arrived in the dark, and a clear number 11 needs to be visible from the road. I am sure that when I booked, it advertised a washer and drier but there is no drier in the property. This is essential when there is only one bath towel and one hand towel per person, with no hand towel and only one teatowel in the kitchen, and there is no outside space to dry washing. There was an airer but towels take too long to dry on this. A few minor adjustments as mentioned above, a tumble drier and clean and cared for outside spaces would make this property and excellent holiday let.

Thank you very much for your feedback and I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay. I did provide hand soap, bin bags, tin foil and cling film for your stay. Regarding the view out of the windows there isn't anything i can do about that as it is a basement flat and hope it did not affect your stay too much. The steps are cleaned and checked after every departure and i am sorry to hear you found them dirty. I can see you attended the property during the winter month of October. I appreciate the photos show a warm, sunny rear garden but the weather and month you attend is out of my control. I have confirmed with Sykes Cottages and i have never advertised a tumble dryer in the property. I hope we can see you in the future. Property Owner

  • "Everything upstairs including the view is great."

We found downstairs not so inviting as it felt damp and dingy. There were cobwebs on the bedroom window and the outer door to the rear entrance was filthy. There was no washer/dryer as in the description, just a washing machine. Ilfracombe was lovely.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Oceanview Apartment 1."

The weather was wet for much of our stay so it was a relief that we had such a nice and spacious apartment to relax in, with good WiFi too. The apartment is on two levels with the bedrooms effectively in the basement and the kitchen and living room on the ground floor, which has a great view of the sea and Capstone Hill overlooking the town. In fact, the pictures of the apartment don't really do it justice. We spent a lot of time just taking in the view from the sofa in front of the big ground floor bay window. The apartment building is very close to the harbour and high street. The only thing that really lets down the location is that the surrounding area is very run down and many of the buildings are quite shabby. The high street itself has many boarded up or derelict shops, but the harbour and promenade are very nice. It has to be mentioned that the apartment is up a very steep hill which is not easy to walk up, and the access road at the back made for quite a challenge to get the car in, having to make a very sharp turn into a narrow lane while going uphill. The steps down to the apartment are also steep, although this is mentioned in the listing. You can also get into the apartment from the front but this also requires going down steps into the basement, and avoiding banging your head on the bay window. So I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with mobility problems. For us however, as a family with teenage children, it was ideally located to explore the town and other parts of North Devon. As a footnote, the only other thing the owner could improve is the instructions about recycling / bin collection. The dustbin at the back of the apartment was totally full from the previous occupants, with the lid bursting open when we arrived (although there was no number on the bin so we assumed it was ours) and it wasn't emptied during our stay. Recycling boxes were collected while we were there, but we only knew about that when we saw neighbours putting their recycling out the front. The collection day seemed to be wrong in the information pack and it looked like previous occupants had also filled all the recycling containers (which are located in a storage area at the front of the aartment). It seems that bin collections are a bit haphazard in Ilfracombe! That aside, we had a memorable stay and enjoyed the apartment.

  • "Great place!"

Really nice spacious apartment on two levels. Beautiful views from the front room and great kitchen space. Good car parking space also! Thoughtful host as we arrived to find a box of delicious biscuits! Excellent array of books for the children which came in handy too. Would not recommend for anyone with mobility/fitness issues. The steep climbs kept me fit throughout our stay. Would definitely recommend.

  • "Apartment was beautiful with amazing views."

It had everything we needed and was very clean. Beds were so comfortable and lovely bedding. Amazing to have a beautiful utility. It’s only a 5 minute walk down to the beautiful harbour, very steep walk, those with mobility issues this would not suit. There is a Tesco nearby within driving distance There are some shops such as Co Op and a mini Morrison to the left of the apartment , we walked there on the first night it was raining and so not many people about this part of the area was a little run down. We tended to always turn right out of the front of the property its a beautiful walk down. Loads to do in this part of Devon. Highly recommend the Clift Top train in Lynton and Lynmouth , tunnel beaches and Woolacombe Beach. My only couple of points about the property is windows need cleaning, this was a shame they hadn’t been done due to such a lovely and I had read this in previous post. There was a small screw sticking up from the floor near the stairs , we just avoided this and I think to make this feel more homely some lovely pictures on the wall in the rooms is needed.

  • "We were warned of the steps leading to the property but there was no hand rail on the bottom steps which could have been slippery when wet."

There was also no proper handrail inside the property on the stairs. We were all able bodied but felt that the lacking of rails was a potential health and safety risk

  • "Our first impressions of the apartment were not brilliant, but it’s a typical basement flat entrance so not sure what else you could do, but on entering the flat it is lovely."

Very spacious and comfortable with a fantastic view. We did have communication with the owner who was very friendly. The hills are a killer for those of us who are not so fit, but worth it 100% to sit and enjoy the view once in the apartment. We will be back if we go to ilfracombe again. The patio area looked ok but no view from there so sitting in the front with the window wide open was just as good. Thoroughly recommend.

  • "Great property."

Lounge and kitchen very good and well equipped. A few things need attention. Great view from the front windows, but they need cleaning. Bird poo and cobwebs! Bedrooms are downstairs and there was a slight damp smell when we arrived. No ventilation in front bedroom as window won't open. Also the blind doesn't work - room is overlooked from street level. The radiator in the en suite doesn't work = damp towels. Instructions for refuse disposal need improving. Never did find the wheely bin or recycling boxes.

  • "Beautiful apartment close to amenities, we enjoyed our stay and would stay again in the future."

Close to the centre of Ilfracombe, plenty of shops nearby and the waterfront is a lovely view from the apartment and only a 5-minute walk away. Would definitely recommend.

  • "The apartment was spacious, modern and pristine with comfortable furnishings and beds with quality bed linen."

The owner seemed to have thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable and responded promptly to a small problem we had with the front door lock. The access from the dedicated parking at the back of the property will be challenging for the less able person, having 30 steps down and it was more difficult in the dark. Also we would ask the owner to provide details in the handbook about recycling. The view from the lounge window was wonderful and we enjoyed late afternoons after walking watching the ever changing sky and sunsets. We would definitely recommend Ocean View apartment.

  • "Lovely furnished appartment, might be difficult for the elderly with the steps leading to the back entrance."

Also front door lock temperamental, struggled to unlock the door on most occasions. Which could be very annoying when coming in after a day out in ilfracombe. Besided that we loved the views from the front window.

The view is fantastic. The beds were very comfortable with high quality bedding. We appreciated the very generous welcome pack which included flowers. Two points to mention: we found the dining table and chairs uncomfortable and access from the back is difficult with 30 steps.

  • "Fantastic property queries answered promptly by owners."

Only feedback would be; rail in second bedroom and somewhere to sit and do makeup would be useful as we were 4 adults sharing 2 bedroom. We arrived in the dark and were unable to locate key fob as it was indoors and not clearly marked and car park space was not clear, and we were unsure how to get it it. Only minor things to help though as the overall stay was lovely, in an extremely clean and comfortable flat. Very tastefully decorated.
