Really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful weather helped but the cottage was great. Thanks

The cottage was excellent . The location was a bit out of the way for sightseeing, but for a total break lovely. Garden was great for the dog walks in the surrounding area.

  • "The cottage was dirty with breadcrumbs and mouse droppings on the worktops as well as mouse droppings on the floor and furniture."

There were light bulbs not working and some without bulbs. We had been to Cedar cottage just before lock down and were delighted with it. This is why we booked it again this year but as you can read it wasn't the same experience. Having said that Sykes were very good, quick response, contacted the owners immediately and we came to a agreeable refund for our stay. This is why I would recommend them and will use them again.

Thank you for your feedback. It was disappointing to read your comments as the condition of our property for guests is of the utmost importance to us. The cottage had been cleaned thoroughly on the Saturday before arrival on Monday. Unfortunately, between Saturday & Monday, it appears that mice entered the property. The contact number for our housekeeper is displayed clearly in the cottage and guests are encouraged to call her immediately if they have any concerns/problems. In this case we were not notified until the 4th day of the stay. Once we had been made aware of the situation, our housekeeper immediately visited the property. Property Owner

  • "The beds where very uncomfortable and the fridge had a bad smell."

..cottage itself was lovely but lack of cutlery and cooking equipment for four people. Location lovely very quiet and great local shop 5 minutes drive

We are sorry to hear that you found the beds uncomfortable. All mattresses have been replaced this year and it is unfortunate that our firm mattresses did not suit your comfort. We supply sets of 6 for cutlery & crockery - as a small cottage, we are restricted to space but hope that this will be ample for 4 people. Our housekeeper cleans the cottage very efficiently and I would suggest that the smell in the fridge was a residue from the cleaning product used. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was well equipped, and in a delightful rural location with lovely views, We watched a couple of fabulous sunsets."

There are also a couple of wildlife ponds on the property that were unexpectedly large and interesting. One small criticism was that the weather turned colder during our visit (late September) but there was no way to turn on the heating. We found ourselves sitting in fleeces on two evenings- not quite what you expect when you have paid over £130 per night. Yes there was an electric heater, but that isn't a substitute for central heating. It would be good to warn people that the spiral staircase is very steep. We are fortunately mobile enough to manage it, but anyone with breathing problems or a heart condition would struggle. Ditto smaller children.

Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear that you were cold. The instructions for the central heating are in the Guest folder and guests are encouraged to set the temperature to suit their comfort. Should there be any problem during your stay, the contact details for the housekeeper are left for guest use and she will always do her best to address any issues. In addition to the central heating, there is an electric fire in the lounge and a electric heater in each bedroom. Property Owner

It was extremely stiff, almost to the point we were worried we would break to key. The handle and the slide button on the key box were also stiff. Apart from this, everything was perfect, we had a lovely holiday : ) This is the second time we have been to this beautiful cottage : )

  • "The cottage was comfortable, well equipped and with ample parking - fairly remote (& with stunning sunsets) but smelt badly of damp - but wasn't."

We sprayed air freshener and let plenty of fresh air in but to no avail. The double mattress has seen better days and we felt that mattress and pillow protectors really should have been used for hygiene purposes, especially in light of the current virus situation. Directions were a little lacking - on leaving the main road the cottage is 3 miles down a mostly very narrow, single-track lane on which you often meet other vehicles, including tractors. So you need to be prepared to reverse into pull-off places.

  • "We didn’t consider the property to be dog friendly as it is listed."

The fence is a foot or so high in several areas and our spaniel was in all the other gardens every time we let him out. The main carpet is cream and it was hard to keep it clean with a wet dog running in and out as we had a lot of rain! Sadly there was no washing machine which we had not noticed in the listing so had to do a hand wash. The bathroom towels were old, thin and at the end of their day. Although you said bringing towels was an option, it would have been better to say you don’t provide towels, as we could easily have brought ours and would have done, had we known what to expect otherwise. The directions were not great and the Sat nav took us on a goose chase. The mileage and sign posting didn’t appear accurate in your directions. Otherwise we had a wonderful week. The cottage is very pretty in a fabulous spot, as long as you can find it! The area is stunning. The above is to help others, so as not to experience our minor frustrations!!!! Thank you for a great week.

  • "The cottage was in a complex of a several other cottages which I don't feel was advertised clearly."

However, it was extremely quiet even with most of the other cottages being occupied. The cottage was very cosy, but some of the kitchen small electrical goods need replacing. In fact, on our second day there on trying to use the microwave we realised it was broken. We phoned the number of the housekeeper as instructed in the cottage details only to find their inbox full so we weren't able to leave a message. We left a text message, which very disappointingly wasn't answered for our stay. Managed to get hold of the housekeeper on the morning of our departure, who apologised and said she would get the microwave swapped out. Not so useful for us! The vacuum cleaner definitely needs an upgrade, had to use it twice following visits to the beach, but had to open front and back doors to do so, because of the overpowering smell of dog. Realise it's a dog friendly cottage but changing the vacuum bags more frequently would be a good idea. The cottage is brilliantly placed for visitinf beaches and family attractions, views from the garden are wonderful. The peace and quiet very relaxing. Correcting the above small problems and would highly recommend.

Thank you for bringing these things to our attention. All that you mentioned has now been addressed. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in North Devon. Property Owner

The cottage is beautifully presented with lots of special touches from the owners making it very cosy and homely. The garden is great and looks out on to the peaceful countryside. Great location within reach of local towns of Bideford, Barnstaple and Bude and also within a 15-20 minute drive to a choice of many beaches. Great holiday.

  • "The description of enclosed garden isn’t correct as the garden isn’t enclosed."

There is a small fence between the neighbours garden but not enough to keep dogs in or out. One of the reason we picked the cottage was the enclosed garden so it was a little disappointing. The cottage was lovely although the kitchen a little small. The setting is amazing and the area beautiful.

  • "Loved the cottage, it was clean, comfortable and very well equipped."

The owners were also very helpful. The location although quite rural was good for visiting local attractions and the lovely North Devon coast . We found the Milky Way theme park which was only around 10 minutes drive away very good for our 7 year old grandson (and us adults). Fish and chip shop at Woolsery very handy for an easy nice meal. The main entrance for the cottage was a little confusing when first arrived as you need to go right round to the rear car park area and then across the garden to the main door that is used, although you could off load things using a front door.

  • "Before we booked I phoned Sykes to ask if the garden was enclosed as we were taking our dog."

On the photos it showed the garden enclosed by low wooden poles but we wanted to check it was secure for the dog. We were told it was enclosed so assumed there would be wire around the garden as well. There was not. The fencing was very low and in some cases only about 50cm high. Within minutes of our arriving a neighbours dogs came into the garden and house pinching our dogs biscuits and toy. The owner was very apologetic and retrieved the toy. The dogs were very friendly but very boisterous. Our dog also within a very short time went over the fence and into the adjoining gardens. As there was a very large pond down a very slippery slope quite close to the house this meant we could not let our dog in the garden without being with her and often on a lead. Not a relaxing time. In fact we left after 4 days. Also it was not mentioned the 2.5 mile road to the property was a single track road with very few narrow pull-ins and as there were working farms in the area this meant a good deal of reversing on my part. An ideal retreat if we had not wanted to explore the area.
