  • "Everything was perfect."

The cottage was beautiful and spotlessly clean. Everything you could possibly need was available, including plasters and sellotape in a drawer of ‘bits’. A lovely little welcome card, flowers, cake and fresh milk was waiting for us on arrival. A huge amount of cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, Iron & board, hairdryer. Everything! The location is beautiful and very peaceful but beware of the very narrow lanes to the village which are a bit scary if you’re not used to them!

  • "We were enthusiastic to discover the Devon coast this year."

Sadly this was not to be! Leaving the Devon Expressway we found ourselves on 4-5 miles of dangerous single track road with few passing places and scary 'head to head' encounters with local cars and an occasional tractor!. On arrival at the cottage we were disappointed to discover it was well below our expectations for the high end rental price point. Internally it was smaller than indicated in the listing photos, TV and kitchen appliances dated, furnishings and bedding tired. Worst of all we found the bathroom overrun with black mould!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We are sorry to hear of the issues you raise. Detailed directions are provided to all guests visiting 1 Gabberwell Cottages and it's always advisable to use these rather than a sat nav. Devon is well known for their single track roads and the occasional tractor! We are fully confident that the photos show a true reflection of the property. We’ve spoken to the owners who dispute your statement on the bathroom and feel this comment is unfair and unjustified. As you’ll see in the other property reviews, other guests who have stayed at the cottage have been very complimentary about its facilities, cleanliness and comfort. The owners take their letting of 1 Gabberwell Cottages very seriously and pride themselves on giving good holiday experiences – this is reflected in the feedback we have received, and we have every confidence this will continue to be the case moving forward. Well equipped, quiet, cosy and very comfortable. Lovely woodburner which despite it being August, the weather made it a grateful addition. The cottage has been well set out with modern fittings yet compliment the age and style of the building. Would without hesitation recommend staying there and would love to return ourselves.

The Cottage is Lovely. Very Comfortable. Especially the Very Large Bed . Best nights Sleep . The Garden is Very safe for Dogs and very pretty. The only downside side , Because the Weather was Beautiful we had a few BBQs .and we love eating alfresco We found the picnic bench isn’t very Comfortable. And couldn’t sit at it for very long which was a shame I have a hip and Back problem. So found it very uncomfortable . With no back rest . Although there were very comfortable sun lounges. You couldn’t sit at the table with them , a Patio dining set would be more appreciated . We would definitely be returning. Roy the owner is lovely.and was very Helpful

  • "Lovely well equipped cottage, in a quiet location."

In a friendly village. Really enjoyed our stay. Although advertised as dog friendly, information received on day of arrival then states dogs to stay downstairs and should be shut in kitchen overnight! More dog tolerant, than friendly! Honesty about this at the outset would have been preferred.

Thank you for your feedback, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay. We are sorry if you missed on the summary points when booking that pets are not permitted upstairs, this is also listed in the booking terms and is a condition for all pet friendly properties across the Sykes portfolio. The log burner was wonderful and the owner was very helpful and delivered plenty of logs for us to use during our stay. Lots of lovely areas to visit including Salcombe and Bigbury-on-Sea. Fantastic garden centres nearby with amazing cakes and local produced items for sale. Restaurants we would recommend are The Cove in Kingsbridge and take away from The Ghurka in Modbury. We had a very relaxing week and would definitely recommend the cottage and the area.

The cottage had everything we needed for a family of 4 plus 2 dogs. The log burner was wonderful and the owner was very helpful and delivered plenty of logs for us to use during our stay. Lots of lovely places to visit in the area including Dartmouth, Salcombe, Plymouth and Bigbury-on-Sea. The nearest large supermarkets are in Kingsbury (around 20-30mins) so we had a supermarket delivery to the cottage which worked very well with top up shops from the Co-op in nearby Modbury. We had a very relaxing week and would definitely recommend the cottage and the area.

It really does have everything you need and it was clean and comfortable. The owner was incredibly helpful and was easily contactable. We took our Labrador with us and he had a great time. The garden was safe and secure and most nearby beaches were dog friendly. The only criticism would be the garden table which was very old and not very comfortable. The garden would be transformed with some modern garden furniture. This is a small point. Overall we loved our stay and would recommend it .

  • "Lovely week, thank you."

Host was very prompt/quick to respond and friendly. Saw a side to S Devon's coastline we'd not seen before and magical afternoons with sunsets/afternoon sun streaming in to garden. The cottage was a smaller than expected from the photos. The double bed was so small that we ended up taking the twin and our youngest child (12) ended up sleeping downstairs in the lounge on a roll matt. Very comfortable for a couple, perhaps with a baby, but a little cramped for four adults.

  • "We found that the cottage provided everything we needed for our holiday - for us and our dog!"

The location is very tranquil, while only being a short walk through the pretty village to the welcoming local pub, which serves good food and is also dog-friendly. It doesn't take long to walk to the coast path. Wonwell beach and estuary are very attractive, either to walk along when the tide is out, or for a swim. We encountered both the owner and the neighbours and found them to be friendly and helpful. We don't usually visit a holiday cottage more than once, as we like variety, but we do intend to return to 1, Gabberwell Cottages.

The owner has thought of everything with the exception of one small thing. The TV is a relatively old one and doesn't get catch up, netflix etc. It would not cost a fortune to buy a new Smart TV. That aside, we loved our weeks stay there. The cottage was spotless and rarely for us when we are away from home we slept really well. An added bonus is that the village pub is very good. We ate there 3 times and on all three ocassions the food was good and the prices very reasonable.

The log burner was great for ambiance in the evening although we didn't really need it as the radiators were very efficient. Everything was thought of and the cottage was excellently equipped. well equipped kitchen, even a knife sharpener. Only fault in kitchen was where it is half conservatory there were no blinds for the glass roof, so our dogs were a bit nervous and they barked at the wrong time of day/ night. Hot shower, nicely presented bathroom, and downstairs toilet. The two Patio steps were a bit deep. Garden is fenced adequately, could do with being a bit higher at the bottom of the garden. Next to a farmers field which was growing some kind of grass. Pleased it was not livestock, as we have young dogs who are very curious about other animals. If you want peace and bird song, with only the odd car noise, this is the place to come. Would thoroughly recommend. Would hire again, but would take our own pillows.

The location is lovely and the village and local pub (The Dolphin) are both picturesque and nearby. There are a good number of walks a short drive away, with beaches where you can walk with your dog, in the summer months. The Dolphin needs a mention as we did not see it possible to walk and enjoy a meal at any of the other surrounding village pubs. Food and beer is good and meals plentiful but you must book tables on the days you wish to eat, as the local inhabitants use the Pub for celebration meals so even Monday can be busy! The shop at St Anne’s Chapel is good to visit and has most things you need for days out rain or shine. Yes we would love to visit again with our dog Charlie.
