  • "Thank you for sharing your wonderful cottage."

It was lovely in every aspect, both inside and the garden. We have stayed there before and plan to do so again with our family. We thoroughly appreciated the very high standard and everything on offer to make our holiday truly wonderful and we take home some lovely memories.Charming chic in bucket loads, can't ask for anything more ! Private note not for publishing: the central heating boiler in the attic above the end double bedroom may have a fan/bearing problem as every time it came on, day & night, it was making a very loud noise and vibrating the ceiling.

  • "The cottage was beautiful and the level of fit-out was outstanding; a young, fit family would love it."

The omission of a picture or description of the stairs, however, was a problem to me. My wife and I are 71 and 68 years of age respectively and both have knee replacements. We invited my sister and brother-in-law, the latter being brain-damaged from a tumour. We managed, but...

Perfect cottage, really well equipped and plenty of space for 4 adults and 2 children. Garden was pretty and gave us useful outdoor space. Close to lovely beaches and amenities.

  • "What a gem!"

We have holidayed in the area for many, many years and is our favourite place, but needed to find replacement accommodation as the owners were retiring back to our usual stay. Higher Collaton Cottage is truly charming and chic with exquisite furnishings of the highest standards. The gardens and setting being a rural iddylic retreat of great appreciation. It was picture perfect but we played a game to try and find something missing which, apart from a tin opener, which we did not need, could not fault this captivating place. The staircase, which is part of this characterful cottage, may present a challenge to the elderly or very young, but by the end of our stay we were stepping happily up and down with little concern. We can't thank you enough for sharing your wonderful home and wish to thank everyone for making it such a fabulous stay. We are a little disappointed it's already booked up for our next holiday. Can't wait to return

  • "A beautiful cottage with lovely well maintained gardens."

It would be helpful to have a quick guide that explained how the heating and cooker worked. Look forward to being back there.

  • "Fantastic and beautiful, only negative is no downstairs toilet for the elderly guests."

Also, there is another smaller cottage right next to this cottage that's not advertised, which was great for our privacy out of season as there were no guests there but in peak with guests might not be so tranquil. Loved the location, beaches are brilliant, beds were really comfy, my wife said it was like sleeping on a cloud. Beautifully equipped kitchen, dinner sets were quality.

  • "This property is beautiful & in a beautiful location but i would never recommend it to anyone."

The property is unloved. It needs instructions on how to use the heating, clearly visible so guests can adjust it according to the weather. The cottage was not cleaned properly. All the surfaces were sticky and grimy. The fridge was broken. There was no curtains over the second door in the living room. The cushions were dirty. The settee was filthy. The stove had not been cleaned out and was full of ash. There was nothing to clean it out with. The DVD player was broken. The tap in the kitchen was dripping and you couldn’t stop it. The patio doors were all rotten on the outside and it was so hard to open. The stairs were so steep. There was a dirty earplug in the bed, how disgusting! There were hairs on the floor of the bathroom. I know this cottage is in the country, but the cockerel 50 yards away is so load at 6am In November. In summer when your windows are open it must be 4.30am -5am people on holiday don’t want waking at that time! We certainly did not. That explains the earplug in the bed. I have stayed in hundreds of properties over many years and this was very badly maintained.

Thank you for your comments and we are so pleased you appreciated this beautiful 16c Devon longhouse and the wonderful South Hams countryside. The heating is operated via the latest Google Nest system and we will ensure instructions are added to the house manual. We are disappointed to hear you were unhappy with the cleaning and we apologise, although we can assure you the sofas were all cleaned at the beginning of the season. You are correct there are no curtains to the study door. The fridge & freezer are working, the note is to advise guests that the ice maker is presently not functioning while we await parts from Germany. You may be aware there are significant problems in sourcing parts at present. The wood burner is less than a year old and it’s normal practice to load new logs onto the old fire and the whole lot burns through. Unfortunately the stairs are one of the fine features of this lovely old cottage and cannot be changed. As for the neighbour’s ducks, lambs, chicks and the cockerel; they all help to remind us of the cacophony of sound one hears in the countryside. Response from the owner Property Owner

) Main en suite bathroom smelt badly of rotten eggs. Clean enough ( although fusty smell throughout like it needed a good airing) and well equipped but for the price we paid I would expect it to have been spotless and not dust.

We contacted Salcombe Office (Coast and Country) at about 5.00 pm and they were with us half an hour later. Gwen from Salcombe Office was more than helpful and sorted out the heating and we had a new iron next day. We could not ask for more.

  • "Great accommodation."

Generally clean however there was a lot of dust on light fittings in the bedroom which bothered my partner who suffers heavily with allergies and has asthma. The beds were very comfortable however we found the duvet very heavy for the time of year, we mostly slept half out of it. The iron also was broken. The experience of the cottage in general was outstanding - with all the charm we were expecting. Additionally the facilities were very good with all the things anybody would need. We would stay again.

  • "A beautiful spacious character property with beams and winding staircase but with modern facilities."

It was very clean and comfortable with welcome outside spaces at the front and rear of the cottage to catch the sun. We enjoyed the rural setting with the local cockerel, sheep and ducks as the main background noises as traffic down the lane was rare. However the location is excellent because many walks can be done from the cottage and other attractions are close by.

  • "A very comfortable and well equipped cottage and we enjoyed our stay."

The owners have clearly put considerable effort into ensuring that the cottage is a welcoming place to return to. Sky TV, a laptop (& Wi-Fi), a well equipped kitchen, a great shower and a comfortable living room all enhanced our stay. The garden is lovely too with several places to sit and the location is very, very peaceful. A few logs for the wood burner would have been good and some tools for it such as a poker and tongs would have been even better! We went out and bought logs and kindling before we discovering we couldn't use the wood burner safely because the tools were missing. £20 wasted. We were not terribly impressed with the cottage preparation either. The keys were not in the specified place when we arrived (in fact they were nowhere to be found) so we had to ring the office who quickly delivered them (the cleaner allegedly didn't know where to put them so took them away with her! Initiative is clearly not her strong point.) The cottage seems to have been empty for a few weeks prior to our arrival and did not appear to have been recently prepared for us. There were flowers in vases (a welcoming touch) but these had been dead for a long time (rather less welcoming), there was a dead woodlice in the bed (my wife was not thrilled) and the place was very cold on arrival (although it warmed up quickly when we turned the central heating on). Overall though we very much enjoyed our stay here and the positives.outweighed the negatives.

  • "Stunning chocolate box cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

Spacious enough for our family with two small children and great location near Salcombe and surrounding beaches. I hope we will return to stay again sometime!

  • "For the price paid, it would have been nice to have received a welcome gesture."

Lacked personal touches. E.g. toiletries, extra pillows, games or even a few videos for rainy days! Beach items maybe a plus for travellers. Did not use upper garden, due to difficult steep climb, not sure if a table is useful in the upper back garden, being such a distance from the kitchen and house, Otherwise a pleasant stay.
