  • "We had the most wonderful holiday, the thatched cottage was beautiful, so cosy and full of character, spotlessly clean and great location."

The only problem we had was the cooker/hot plate it was beyond our ability to understand how to use it, so we decided to eat out for breakfast and lunch which was no problem. We loved our stay and thank the Owners for providing us with such fabulous holiday accommodation and having the park opposite the cottage was a added bonus with the dog.

  • "Lovely cottage, very traditional decor, great position."

Could do with some new crockery and a cull of some of the ornaments as felt a bit old fashioned and unnecessary. The plastic grass in the lean-to really needs to be changed as looks naff and not in keeping with rest of the cottage. Comfy beds, decent shower

  • "We are both in our late eighties so the absence of an upstairs toilet was a problem for us."

The cottage was cold and the tv volume was fixed at a low level and difficult to hear. I realise that these things would not be a problem for younger people but by Wednesday 7th we left for the comfort of our own home. The cottage was very pleasant and in a nice location Mike Teague

  • "Lovely cottage in a pleasant village which gave us easy access to great walks without long drives, which is exactly what I was after for a walking holiday!"

The kitchen knives were sharp - a rarity in rented cottages, which is why I tend to bring a sharp knife with me. Two small quibbles. The specification mentioned cones to preserve parking outside. I couldn't find these, but it did not matter as there was no difficulty parking this week. Outside of the owners' control was the fact that two near neighbours were carrying out renovation work during the week. This did not affect the cottage or cause a nuisance, but did mean my car was covered in dust.

It was within very easy walk of the village centre and there are lots of walks from the door of the cottage. We had an excellent week at Small Piece and would love to return in the future.

  • "A great little cottage ideally situated for all the amenities that you could want."

The only issue was the lounge suite was a bit hard for comfort, maybe that's just personal preference but really did not detract too much from the overall experience.

Only gripe, television and Sky remote controls a little confusing, could do with more information. Parking no problem at all, and locals very friendly. Had good weather and a very enjoyable stay.

The two armchairs in the lounge were most uncomfortable, the seating is hard. The two single beds are very soft and not good for back problems. There were no bin liners in the kitchen after emptying the contents.

  • "We have just returned from a relaxing holiday in Porlock and can highly recommend this delightful and cosy cottage."

Unlike previous comments on here, we also had no problems at all with the Sky TV nor phone reception to be honest. We never had any issues parking right outside whenever we ventured out in the car and we found its location to be perfect for many walks of differing lengths and gradients. If I had one complaint, it is simply to say that a week here is not long enough! A nice little addition may be to put a little chair or stool in the bathroom, but that's just a personal preference and not a complaint. All in all, Smallpiece is everything it should be: Clean, comforting and relaxing in idyllic surroundings.

  • "Really Great stay."

Everything as described. You can't really describe the cosiness of the place but it was very cosy. Loads of nice little touches. Some people had a problem with parking, I be sees from other reviews. But we had no trouble at all. Parked right outside every time.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Small Piece."

It is ideally situated for Porlock village (where my parents live!) and the wider Exmoor area. We knew where it was but the directions were clear. There was plenty of crockery and cutlery and everything we needed to cook (although, unfortunately, some of the plates had been put away dirty). The bed was comfy, the cottage was warm, parking was easy. Porlock was very quiet which was good - apparently the COVID is increasing again in the area. I grew up in a thatched cottage about 10 miles from Porlock and Small Piece felt like home as soon as we got inside with its quirky layout and low ceilings. We loved the little Christmas touches as well. Thank you!

  • "Poorly maintained."

Tired bathroom & kitchen really needs updating for a holiday rental. Cleanliness needs improving a lot. No conservatory, just a cold damp lean to. Could see that parking could be an issue, not designated per property, not enough room for 2 cars outside the cottage, our 1 medium sized car blocked the window & part of the front door. However, great location, easy walk into quaint village. Size of property good, beds fresh & comfy. Heating good, although some radiators need bleeding as cold at the top!

Many thanks for your feedback and we are pleased you enjoyed the size of the accommodation which is a bonus in a 17th century property. The fresh beds which we are thrilled you found comfortable, are thanks to our dedicated weekly contracted cleaner. The conservatory is a robust walled structure which can be seen on picture 15 on the Sykes website advert and while the property does back onto a river and has 17th century stone, the conservatory does have a wall mounted heater that will provide adequate heating. We sent an email 6 weeks prior to your arrival about the change to the parking and offering to help with any queries. We can reassure guests that vehicles can park at the recreational grounds during the day. For overnight, vehicles can be parked outside the property on the quiet rural lane that the property is located on. There are also bollards available at the property for use outside to reserve a space as required. We are also scheduled to have maintenance at the property which will include an end of season deep clean and we will also be liaising with a plumber regarding radiator attention. We will also be having any grouting work done in that maintenance schedule. Thanks again for your comments. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage."

More facilities than published, there was sky TV, freezer, dryer. We had no problems parking but could see there could be. It stated when we booked there were two parking spaces, this is not the case. You are not allowed to park overnight in the recreation area and it is first come first served outside the cottage, we were lucky as the cottages either side were empty. Felt the bathroom should have had a blind at the window. Although it looked as though no-one could see in, we did experience someone on the bank opposite early one morning.

Many thanks for your feedback and we will update the advert to include the Sky TV, freezer and dryer, we're glad you enjoyed them. Regarding the parking, Sykes sent an email to you a month prior to your arrival advising that parking would now be roadside and we amended the advert at the time. We did ask you in the email to contact us if you had any questions regarding this change but did not receive any contact from you before you arrived. We can also confirm that there are bollards available at the property for reserving the roadside parking spaces. We would also like to reassure guests that the bathroom has curtains. Property Owner

I think for the price we paid for a week that a welcome pack would be the least the owners could offer and some information on what to do in the local area, a map or 2 maybe?

Thanks for your comments, we regrettably do not provide a welcome pack at the moment due to the covid situation. We do supply local info brochures however and these can be found in the cupboard in the hallway. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was lovely, and had everything we needed, both for us, and the dog."

The location couldn't be better, as it is directly opposite the entrance to the recreation ground, which has a dog exercise field at one end. The village is only a couple of minutes walk away, and has excellent shops and restaurants. There are lovely walks in the area too. We couldn't get the oven to work, but we didn't really need it, so it wasn't too much of a problem. We will definitely be back!

Thank you for your lovely comments and your high scores. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. I checked the oven as soon as I was aware and the switch needed putting on. I do give my mobile number out pre arrival for guests that need help, and I would have sorted it immediately for you if I had known at the time. Property Owner

I loved the sound of the river from the bedroom and it had so much character. The road in front was quiet and had an excellent recreation ground opposite with a dog exercising area for our dog. Porlock is a great place to stay with pubs, cafes and a wonderful walk to the Weir. The owners called to check everything was ok and along with the Somerset sunshine it was a very happy stay.

About the location

PORLOCK

Minehead 5.5 miles; Lynton 11 miles.

Porlock is a quaint village, popular with tourists due its character, proximity to the lovely North Somerset coastline and situation within the Exmoor National Park. There are plenty of little gift shops along with pubs, cafes and restaurants to be found and only two miles away, the picturesque harbour of Porlock Weir offers wonderful views across the Bristol Channel. The Porlock Hill takes travelers up a steep, winding road out of the village to the Exmoor Hills, where walkers, horse riders and cyclists will love the open space, where ponies and red deer roam the moors. In 2011, Exmoor was designated as Europe’s first International Dark Skies Reserve, and so this is an excellent base for a romantic evening spent gazing at the stars, where a clear night unveils an abundance of interesting constellations to the naked eye. Porlock offers the choice of sea fishing from the weir, and the reservoirs and rivers of Exmoor are only a short, scenic drive away. Golfers can stay in Porlock and enjoy one of the several courses on the edges of Exmoor, with the nearest only seven miles away. The medieval village of Dunster, where the castle dominates the skyline, makes a great day out, or take a ride on the West Somerset steam train along the coast to the little harbour village of Watchet.
