  • "A comfortable, well equipped,warm house."

We enjoyed our stay. The only criticism was the lack of handrail on the lower flight of stairs to the kitchen. We found this potentially dangerous.

  • "Fabulous little property, location excellent."

Facilities in property very good just needs a little TLC. Only negative , being over four floors was not made clear until our booking was confirmed. My eighty year old mother did struggle with the stairs. That said it would not put us off booking the property again.

Great location in Dartmouth and close to all amenities. As it is set over 4 floors you do get used to your legs having a bit of a workout, with the kitchen in the basement and main bedroom on the top floor! The property is furnished with everything you need and the kitchen is well equipped. The free parking permit for the main car park is a real bonus.

  • "Have visited Dartmouth annually for many years and always lovely to discover a gem!"

Such a delightful house set in an ideal location, close to shops, amenities and the River Dart. The house was a home from home with everything you might need. The view from the top is worth the price alone ~ and worth climbing all the stairs, simply stunning! Just a couple of things ~ The stairs to the kitchen ought to have a two way light switch. Appreciate having the parking permit for Mayors Avenue car park, could it not also include the Park & Ride? Lastly, loved the quirky items and art work dotted around the house ~ made the house all the more homely.

  • "Just as we remembered the house from our last visit in 2016."

Great location for town, the views from the top floor still outstanding although we find the stairs from bottom to top hard work now. We also think the on suite shower is due for an update, but does the job. The standard of cleaning when we arrived was excellent and it was apparent that the house had been redecorated throughout with new carpets. Always a nice house to stay in for a holiday.

  • "We spent two weeks in this lovely cottage in the centre of Dartmouth."

Having read a negative review just before leaving we were pleasantly surprised. The best thing about the house is definitely the view from the top floor and we spent time just sitting with a cuppa (and occassionally a take-away cream tea) looking out at the comings and goings in the harbour below. For us the house was wonderfully well-equipped. Especially the kitchen. We like tea and usually take our own teapot but the house has one! And a water jug! Half way through our two weeks the agent contacted us and offered us a clean and fresh sheets and towels. They are local so you can easily contact them about any issues you may have - we didn't need to. It was good to have a parking permit for the carpark which is only a short walk from the house and there is space in the road to drop off on arrival and as you leave. Although the house is central to the town it is not overly noisy. The shops have everything you need and many luxuries you don't! We chose to look round the town in the mornings and late afternoons when it was quieter. Fish and chips, fudge, ice cream and cream teas abound as well as lots of pubs and eateries to chose from. There are lots of things to do locally; use the ferry to Kingswear, take a boat trip down the river , walk to Agatha Christie's summer home, visit the castle, take the steam train to Paignton and look round the Royal Naval College. There are also beaches where you can swim and a multitude of water sports. The house is on four floors. The living room is comfortable and has a TV which even technophobes like ourselves can work! The beds are comfortable and two bathrooms mean you can space out a little. The dining table in the kitchen sits 6 and as said earlier the kitchen is well equipped with storage space for our own provisions. The washer dryer was great as was the dishwasher. Two small issues: the stairs between the four floors are quite steep and the water pressure was not great. One small improvement I would make would be a little table in the room with the view for a table to put your cream tea on!

  • "Aeolus house is well situated in Dartmouth and the view from the top floor is wonderful and really makes up for the lack of facilities, old and tired furnishings and kitchen equipment, stained carpets and marked walls!"

A clothes airer that collapses when full of clothes, no room in the kitchen cupboards for food as they're full of unnecessary items. The house was tidy but not clean! Dirty pans in the cupboard, food crumbs inside the fridge and stuck to the side. The stairs are quite narrow and steep, something to consider when booking as it's over 4 floors, It became very tiresome to prepare for the day! The top floor bedroom with the king size bed was lovely, although the ceiling slopes away and makes it difficult to get in and out of the bed without twisting your back! The view from the landing at the top is absolutely spectacular, most evenings spent with a cup of tea watching the ferry going back and forth, great viewpoint of Dartmouth! Take ear plugs the seagulls are really really loud from very early on. We were lucky with great weather and made the most of the local areas, Paignton via steam train a must, paddle board off Strete beach lots of fun, Totnes a lovely town with amazing pasties and boat hire on the river Dart. If you love seafood especially fish and chips..... Rockfish is well worth booking a table, absolutely delicious, very well catered for kids too with a wonderful pack of goodies and lovely friendly staff! The Dartmouth arms is good for a pint in a plastic cup that you can take out to sit by the river but don't waste your money on the food it was grim and expensive! There is a lovely large play area at coronation park for kids, tennis court, playing field and a fab cafe. We had a wonderful time in Dartmouth and will definitely return but not to this property!

We are very sorry to hear about your concerns regarding the decoration and the furniture in our property. The entire house was recorated at a cost of several thousand pounds in 2021, and the carpets replaced in 2020 so I am somewhat surprised at your comments. We have been unable to see the property ourselves this summer because of the volume of bookings. The furniture is almost all vintage so I apologise if this appeared tired to you. With regards to your comments regarding the cleaning, I will refer this to Coast and Country for their response, as they are responsible for cleaning between guests. Our regular cleaners have been very assiduous when we have visited our house. Property Owner

  • "We had a great time in Dartmouth with this cottage as our base."

It is so central to everything - too close to the icecream parlour - perfect for a quick walk down to the harbour. Its so lovely - the pictures dont do it justice as this is a big space. The lounge maybe a bit tight and the sofa not that comfy but for a few hours at the end of long days out it was fine. We were thrilled with this house, the kitchen space is huge with dining table and we found the bedrooms perfect for what we needed. I would rebook this house for location alone.

Parking was the only issue as the car park often got too full so we had to find elsewhere to park. Lovely location right in the town. Would definitely return! Thank you.

  • "We loved Aeolus house."

It’s charm, central position and view from the Juliet balcony made up for having no outside space. The parking permit was also a massive bonus and I would suggest this is more clearly highlighted on your website as parking is. We initially t The bed linen was good quality and clean. However, when stripping the beds, the protective undercover came away and revealed a rather soiled, albeit dry, mattress which was a little off putting. Finally the only other negative was the lack of washing machine. We managed for a week but anyone staying for 2 weeks would struggle. There is a washing machine in the property so it was a little frustrating not being able to use it. Maybe the information on your website is incorrect? Overall, we had a wonderful stay. We would definitely use Sykes cottages again and if in Dartmouth, would stay at Aeolus House.

  • "Aeolus house was a very pleasant surprise."

From the description and photos, we were expecting it to be small and a bit cramped, but it was huge, spacious and airy! The views from the Juliet balcony are lovely, and we spent time most mornings and evenings in the sitting area on the top floor looking out at the harbour. We paid the extra fee for the third bedroom, so our teenage boys didn't have to share a bed. It was bigger than many bunk rooms we've had in other holiday properties. I'm a bit baffled as to why the property isn't marketed as 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6 - there's more than enough space. The only downside of Aeolus house is the stairs. Being a 4 story house there are a lot of them, and making a morning cup of tea to enjoy on the balcony means a trip from the 2nd floor to the basement and back again!

The plug hole in the bath moved so didn't dare take a bath, wasn't sure what would happen. The mattress in the lower floor bedroom wasn't great either. I was also disappointed to be told that in order to stay the complete week which I believe I had paid for but was initially unable to so, that a £30 admin charge would be liable. Not great for customer relations.
