  • "The bungalow was lovely, some of the view was blocked by trees."

The bathroom, downstairs cloakroom and what was described as a shower in the master bedroom are in need of updating. The shower in the master bedroom was not used as it looked ancient. Such a large room screams out for an ensuite

  • "Blackgate is a lovely house with perfect views of Dartmouth Naval College and Dartmouth harbour."

The house has everything required for a lovely holiday and is ideally situated for walk into Dartmouth or short drive to Blackpool Sands. We felt at home staying there and didn’t want to leave! Thoroughly recommend the property for families who want to stay local to Dartmouth but can use as a base to venture further afield.

  • "A beautiful home which was very nice to stay in."

The main bedroom sliding doors and balcony was a real treat , and the view truly stunning. The home was well equipped and things like dvds and board games /books a welcome addition which we took advantage of .Ideally I think the bathroom could do with updating .I also think the washing machine is well past its best and certainly did not clean our clothes very well even when it eventually worked. The beds were comfy and extra pillows etc provided. As a party of 6 we found the kitchen of a high standard with the pull out table and separate dining room very good. The home is very nice and as with all our Sykes bookings we were not disappointed. However a negative for us was having to collect and return the key to an office in the town , as we had a large van this required us to walk and was not as convenient as a key safe . The country cottage personnel where not too friendly and seemed disinterested when my wife arrived. The cleaning was adequate but was not spotless , I include this as I'm sure the owner would like to know if they are paying for this . As a final comment I would say , lovely home , beautiful views , well equipped and comfortable. Maybe with a view of some updating in bathroom/ ensuite .Thankyou for our stay.

  • "We’ve had a wonderful first holiday in Dartmouth made thoroughly enjoyable by the generous accommodation at Blackgate."

Plenty of room for everyone and a bonus that the lounge furniture meant there was a choice of comfortable seating for everyone. The views are wonderful especially from the upstairs and we spent most mornings and evenings gazing across at the River Dart and the rolling green hills beyond. In rain and shine, the views were amazing and as I have a disability, it meant that staying in on a few of the days was no disappointment, in fact it was a pleasure! There is everything and more available for self catering and the house has a very comfortable feeling about it. If anything, the house is better in reality than in the photos! Thank you Blackgate, we hope to visit you again

  • "The house was perfect very comfortable with everything we required."

However the description of the property was 5/10 minutes walk from the town of Dartmouth what you fail to state is it’s at the top of a very steep hill and impossible to climb for the elderly. It was also very difficult to get a taxi at any time and if you took the car to the center you could only park for 2 hours anywhere. In the day was fine to use the park and ride but that service stopped at 7pm.

  • "Washing machine tricky to operate and temperamental."

Spacious house. Master bedroom was big with views of the river and we spent most evenings sitting up there. If anyone was considering major works on the house, consider making it an 'up-side down house', with bedrooms on the ground floor, living area on top.

Having off road parking and being so close to town was great but with young children in our party it would have helped if there had been a gate.

  • "Almost impossible to contact the local office by telephone as the local area dialing code links to your national call centre and a very, very, long wait."

If I'd needed to contact them to say we were delayed and unable to be in the office for the key during office hours (times not stated)...... We would have had to sleep in the car! Local office staff all very cheerful, friendly and helpful. House is lovely and my only gripe would be the absence of thick bin bags, advertised on several laminated notices and adhered to worktops. Would I stay at Blackgate again?Oh, yes. I'd love to live in the property and spend all my time admiring the views.

Thank you for your feedback we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Blackgate, and that you would like to return. We do make a courtesy call to all guests that have not arrived before the office is due to close to let them know how to collect their keys, we would also send an email with the information. We look forward to welcoming you back to Dartmouth. Property Owner

  • "The house is absolutely lovely."

It was spotlessly clean and very large, certainly big enough for our party of six people. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen very well equipped (there is nothing we were without and we ate in most nights), and the lounge has plenty of space and sofas/chairs. A nice surprise was the kitchen that had been recently refurbished to a really high quality. The views are superb especially from the main bedroom where you can lie in bed and watch the boats on the estuary. In all a lovely property that we very much enjoyed and a testament to the owners/agency who have equipped it so well and to such a high quality. It will be top of our list for a repeat visit to the South Hams.

The walk down into the centre Dartmouth takes only about 10 minutes and passes lovely, almost Mediterranean-looking houses; the way back uphill takes a little longer depending on your fitness level. Conveniently, there are shops and a petrol station just a few minutes up the main road. We really enjoyed our stay and would love to come again!

Thank you for your feedback, we are really pleased to hear that Blackgate was ideal for your family holiday with its spacious rooms., parking and wonderful views. We hope to see you again soon Property Owner

  • "Blackgate is a very nice house but needs updating!"

The decor and furnishings are very dated. The electrical equipment (washing machine, microwave, etc are archaic! ) The kitchen, though very big is in dyer need of replacing, there is no cupboard space for food at all and the table and chairs in the kitchen are very rickety. One of the gas rings didn't work. The shower curtain in the bathroom needs replacing with a proper screen. The view shown on the website from the garden can only be seen from the bedroom as the garden shrubbery has blocked it out.

Thank you very much for your feedback. Your comments have been passed on to the owner and we are pleased to advise that the owners are looking to fit a new kitchen during the winter down period. Unfortunately, due to the window placement in the bathroom, it is not possible for a shower screen to be fitted. Thank you for you constructive feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to Dartmouth at some point in the future. Property Owner

  • "Blackgate was lovely, a spacious and very clean house, lots of room for 2 families of 4."

The kitchen was well equipped (decor is quirky!), with a good size fridge-freezer plus second fridge in the utility room. The carpets throughout looked new, and the garden well-tended. Amazing views of the Naval college and harbour, particularly from the large master room. It was sunny when we were there (hurrah!) and was therefore very light in the bedrooms in the morning, so advise taking eye masks if you want to sleep beyond 6 in the summer! Great location to walk into town, very steep walk back for working off the fish & chips!

  • "Blackgate is positioned high up in a lovely road overlooking the quay and the Naval College."

The house is spacious and clean and all home comforts are included. The kitchen was great as it had all the crockery / cutlery/ utensils and facilities that you could ask for. A washer / dryer would have been a welcome addition but the clothes airer was very handy as well as the line in the garden . They both served their purposes. The washing machine was situated in the kitchen and may be better positioned in the utility room as there is plenty of space out there. We have holidayed in Dartmouth on many occasions with a variety of our family and Blackgate is the best property that we have stayed in. There is so much to do in and around Dartmouth and on the coast in both directions that makes Blackgate an ideal base. All in all , the accomadation and the holiday itself were very good indeed and we hope to return in the future.

  • "The photo of the patio table in the garden is misleading, from the photo you assume that this is the back garden but the table is actually positioned in the front garden !"

We were expecting to sit in the back garden and see this view but as the garden trees and bushes are overgrown you can only see this view when standing in front garden. Cottage is in an ideal location and is a short walk to Dartmouth Town Centre but walk up to cottage is up a steep hill.

Thank you very much for your feedback, We are sorry that you found the photo of the table in the garden misleading. As you now know, Blackgate is on a corner plot and has only a small back garden. The property is bordered by two very quiet roads and the mature shrubs offers seclusion to the side garden. As well as from the front garden, we hope you enjoyed the river view from the master bedroom and balcony which we think is particularly special at night with the backdrop of the Kingswear lights. • "We have stayed a number of times at blackgate but will not do so again."

This property is a fantastic size and well equipped but it has not been maintained to a satisfactory level at all. The upstairs bathroom toilet has been changed but the remainder of the bathroom suite continues to be in the garage (it was there last year!!) the downstairs toilet floor is continually wet as something is leaking, the place looks like it needs every window professionally cleaned, some of the curtains are not hooked and look like they are about to come off. I could go on. There were also cob webs in the property suggesting it hasn't been thoroughly cleaned and perhaps isn't let that often now, I don't know. It is not what I would expect from a property costing just short of a £1000 per week.

Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart estuary in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the coast, Dartmouth is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Devon. It offers a stunning waterfront, ancient narrow streets lined with boutique shops, restaurants and art galleries plus many local events such as the annual Dart Music Festival and the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, along with the Dartmouth Food Festival held every October. There are many interesting cycling and walking routes around Dartmouth, including the South West Coast Path, the Dart Valley Trail and plenty of quiet country lanes. A trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway through picturesque countryside to Paignton is a must, and so is a boat trip across to Kingswear and on to Brixham, a pretty little harbour town. For those seeking some beach activities, there is a wide choice in the South Hams area such as Blue Flag Award winner Blackpool Sands, and Slapton Sands, both extremely popular and just a stone's throw from Dartmouth.
