  • "A great property."

Loved the sociable open plan living area. Good sized functional bedrooms and a nice bathroom. Really warm and comfortable. Attention to a few simple maintenance things would bring the property up to five stars. 1. Fix the exterior light (dark and dangerous up exterior steps without it) 2. Replace broken cutlery knives (they pull apart) 3. A decent frying pan that works on halogen hob (the only one that works on the hob is dreadful) 4. A good depth non stick wok type pan with a lid would be great for making bolognaise/risotto type food otherwise you have to use a saucepan which ends up sticking. 5. Some tumbler glasses. 6. More cupboard space available for guests food would be great. Most guests unlikely to need cake making utensils. A few tweaks and this is a really great property. Thank you!

  • "The property was adequate for our stay – it smelt somewhat musty downstairs when we first arrived, but generally it was comfortable and well equipped."

Unfortunately, the windows in two of the bedrooms did not have an opening facility, which made the nights rather hot and stuffy. We did notice a few minor problems with the property, which the owner might like to address: a) The outside light at the top of the exterior stairs did not work (we could see that the bulb filament was broken) b) The provided LED torch didn’t work (assume that the batteries were dead) c) The lid on the kitchen pedal bin did not function d) The swan-neck kitchen tap is quite loose on the sink The Sykes advert did state that there were two pubs in the village. This wasn’t the case - one certainly looked like it had been closed for quite some time; the other was in fact not a ‘boozer’, but appeared to be a high class restaurant – disappointing for our all male group, but hey ho! The village itself was quite quiet, resulting in very peaceful and laid back holiday. We would certainly consider staying at the Old Chapel again, if we were holidaying in the area in the future. Thank you for the complimentary milk etc.

  • "It is a lovely place."

Good location for walks straight from the doorstep. Car was not in use for two days (we had an active bank holiday weekend). Nice, quite walk through nearby cemetery. It would be nice to have one spare cupboard for our groceries. Children loved stable doors. Highly recommended

  • "The large rug in the living room was covered in dog hairs."

The steps to the front door had moss and dog hairs on them. There was no outdoor light working to the front or back of the property which was a hazard. The extractor fan in the bathroom was constantly on. It would have been useful to have had a dedicated cupboard for our food.

Thank you for your feedback. Your comments have been taken on board. We are sorry for the any dogs hair that were found. Unfortunately the previous guests were not as respectful of the property as one would have hoped. Property Owner

  • "Lovely property in beautiful small village with great walks to Castle Drogo and Fingle Bridge although roads into the village are very narrow so may not suit some drivers (prior to visiting I was concerned with regards the parking space as thought this may be difficult to access but this was not a problem)."

Unfortunately during our visit the pub was in process of being up up for sale and though open some days was not doing any food and only had one draught beer on, the Old Inn in the village is a gourmet restaurant with two courses £61 (but we didn"t visit) the Fingle Bridge Inn is about a 30min walk with traditional pub menu at reasonable prices. My one small negative comment is that the property details state kingsjze bed but it was a double though this didn't effect our enjoyment of the cottage.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. Lovely to hear you enjoyed the property and the great local walks. As far as we know the pub you mentioned is up for sale, but there are a number of other pubs nearby. We have corrected the bed to show a double, so thank you for bringing this to our attention. • "This was the second time we've stayed at the Old Chapel, a lovely house in a great village location on Dartmoor with pub & village shop - we heartily recommend it."

This time we took the dog to both Castle Drogo and Fingle Bridge using the various footpaths that lead from the village through the woods, cool in this summer's heatwave. We could have done with a fan upstairs though, even with all windows and top half of the door open!

  • "A lovely quiet home in a pretty Dartmoor village, a stone's throw from Castle Drogo and Fingle Bridge."

3 bedrooms on ground floor, spacious living room, kitchen & dining area upstairs, view over countryside at one end, steps down to a small garden & driveway for parking your car at the other. Pub in easy staggering distance, a posh restaurant too - although the owner wasn't happy when we barged in thinking The Old Inn was another pub... Good WiFi, can sign into Netflix on the living room TV. Good shower. All the kitchen equipment you need. A great choice for a stay on Dartmoor!

  • "No welcome pack and had to hunt for spare loo rolls and dishwasher tablets."

Otherwise all very good/excellent. Comfortable, warm, very well equipped

Thank you for your feedback which we have discussed with the housekeeper and she advised that a welcome pack of tea, coffee, sugar, milk and Tunnocks Teacakes are left for guests. They do not usually leave dishwasher tablets or washing pods due to the property being self catering, however they will now leave 1 of each in future. They do leave washing up liquid and a toilet roll is always left. We are pleased to hear you had an otherwise comfortable stay. Property Owner

  • "We were worried about a previous review and contacted you."

We received reassurance that all would be well and the caretaker also confirmed that they had given the place a good clean. The Old Chapel is well situated for country walks. The pub is a genuine old style hostelry. We enjoyed our holiday.

  • "Cottage had overpowering smell of damp, surfaces in the downstairs area particularly (bedrooms + bathroom) were cold to the touch and clammy."

Bathroom had black mould on ceiling and in tile grout. The property had not been cleaned properly with built up (sticky) dust on surfaces and flies etc. Stuck on blinds etc. The boiler has insufficient hotwater to fill the bath more than ~20cm making it nothing more than an ornament and meaning if more than one person wanted a shower the second person could not be sure they wouldn't get showered in cold water. This property needs a lot of work to get it up to a standard for it to be suitable for letting, don't book. We ended up coming home after 1 night of a 5 night stay as we could not relax.

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry to hear you left the property after 1 night without contacting us. Following your departure from the property we immediately sent out a member of our quality assurance team to investigate. Whilst some of the points you raised have been discussed with the owner our inspector found the property to be in good order and described, on her return as beautiful. The property is around 200 years old, the heating had been switched on prior to your arrival so should not have felt damp. The cleanliness issues have been addressed with both the owner and housekeeper and a deep clean has been carried out and the minor maintenance issues have also been actioned. Due to the size of the water tank in comparison to the bath, it is not possible to fill the bath with hot water, the hot water will fill the bath to approximately half way, this will be added to the information folder to make future guests aware. Had you contacted us whilst in the property we would have been able to rectify any issues for you. Property Owner
