  • "Beautiful property with everything you need for a break away from everything, pity the beach wasn’t what we expected for the dog walking but Dunster beach is only half an hour away and is perfect."

The Hood Arms is great for food and the hospitality from the landlord and employees was second to none and highly recommended

  • "Lovely cottage, very comfortable, cosy and well equipped."

Slept really well as quiet and bed very comfortable. Close to great pub restaurant so big bonus. One tiny thing that sounds petty but is important: when we arrived there was only the end of a toilet roll and shops were closed. If there had been three of us that would have been a problem.

The property

Nestled in the coastal village of Kilve, surrounded by the glorious Quantock hills, is the beautifully styled 1 Old Thatch; a thatched cottage set just a stone's throw away from the stunning coast, perfect for both small families or a romantic getaway for two.

Park up outside the enchanting cottage and easily manoeuvre your belongings inside as you breathe in the refreshing sea air.

Enter through the stable door to discover the wonderful sitting room, traditionally-decorated with beamed ceilings and an exposed brick wall with a decorative woodburning stove; this rustic living area is the perfect place to curl up on the sofa in front of the TV.

Stepping through the property, find the dining area fit with a drop leaf table for more space when it's not in use; gather together around the table and pop open a bottle of fizz to toast to a wonderful holiday near the sea.

Venture to the thoughtfully laid-out kitchen, home to all the necessities you could need to prepare mouth-watering dishes, benefiting from underfloor heating that will keep you toasty as you prepare a hearty breakfast in the morning.

The utility cupboard provides extra amenities, with a handy washing machine to refresh your wardrobe throughout your staycation.

For a relaxing evening, find the ground-floor bathroom for a luxurious soak in the tub, where the neutral tones create the ideal setting for winding down after exploring the rugged coast of North Somerset.

When sleep calls, retreat upstairs to locate a double and a single bedroom, both boasting character with beamed, sloped ceilings.

Back on the ground-floor, gain access to the patio garden through the back door; an idyllic space to enjoy a meal around the table, alfresco-style, and savour a glass of wine as you soak in the tranquility of the quaint village.

To explore the area, lace up your walking boots and embark on a fantastic nature walk around the scenic landscape of the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or head to Jurassic Coast for spectacular views.

A little further afield rests the large village of Williton where you will be spoilt for choice with the variety of shops, pubs and places to dine out, as well as Williton Station, where visitors can enjoy a a unique steam train experience.

The historic town of Bridgwater is also worth a visit; uncover the town's heritage past at the Blake Museum and for an insight into Bridgwater's culture tour the Bridgewater Arts Centre.

About the location

Williton 5 miles; Bridgwater 13 miles.

The small village of Kilve is situated in the Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just five miles from the village of Williton and thirteen miles from the town of Bridgwater in Somerset. Kilve hosts a quaint pub, Post Office and shop for all your general needs, as well as the Old Chantry tea rooms, which are set in an ancient monastery. There’s plenty to see and do from the village, including a beach, just 1.5 miles away, from where you may be lucky enough to spot fossils amongst the rock formations. Your first point of call is surely to explore the Quantock Hills, known locally as ‘the hidden jewel of England’. At 9,500 acres, there’s open moorland and woodlands on offer, along with an abundance of wildlife. The town of Bridgwater is also within each reach, offering several buildings of historical interest and an excellent selection of restaurants and pubs, as well as the annual Bridgwater Illuminated Carnival in November, where the use of over 20,000 light bulbs result in a mesmerising display of colour, sound and entertainment. Also in the area are a number of other beaches at Watchet, Dunster and Minehead, historical places of interest, such as Montacute House, Dunster Castle, Barrington Court, Cleve Abbey and Glastonbury Abbey, as well as the cities of Bristol and Bath, which are well worth a visit. A lovely base for your Somerset retreat.
