  • "There was a very bad musty smell and we had to buy air fresheners."

Our clothes smelt musty when we got home. No toilet paper on arrival. The welcome pack was pathetic and the two tiny milk cartons were out of date The bath would not hold water this has previously been reported but not repaired. Very poor for the environment The bathroom was very cold at all time and the heater in effective. The beds were comfortable and the house was well stocked. The TV is very small. A radio or better still a Bluetooth Speaker would be a good idea. A little attention and this cottage would get a much better rating.

Thank you for your feedback and sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. The cottage is over 300 years old with solid cob walls, and like most properties of this style and age, some mustiness is expected. Normally there is a little mustiness on arrival but this soon disappears. I will look into why there was no toilet paper and the emergency tea/coffee provision had not been refreshed. If you had contacted us straight away, we could have addressed this. Property Owner

It is such a lovely cosy place and the bed was very comfortable. There are lots of good walks and gorgeous scenery in the surrounding area too.

  • "Started with an unfortunate phone call with the property owner regarding an email that I was never sent regarding the key box."

Found the response a bit rude. We thought the cottage was great, just as described and great for dogs. Outside area was perfect for the dogs. Really comfortable beds. Downstairs was great also, everything worked well. Everything was available in kitchen, a few of the oven trays could do with a deep clean but all other utensils, cups glasses etc were fine. Water pressure is really low. Shower all worked well, didn’t use bath so can’t comment on that. Would absolutely recommend this cottage for anyone staying in this area

Thank you for your review and I'm glad you liked the cottage. I'm sorry that you thought me rude on the phone, it was a very poor line and I could hardly hear you. Please be assured that I did send an email with all the details on getting to and entering the cottage, I do this for every guest to aid their arrival. Jill Property Owner

Keys unavailable on arrival. Property had a dreadfull smell of damp like a second hand shop or jumble sale. Cleanliness poor and maintenance poor. Very poor value - will never use again, suggest it is removed from site.

  • "The cottage was everything we expected."

Previous reviews were accurate and helped us make the most of the cottage and prepare for the parking. The cottage is beautiful, dog freindly, and our dogs loved it. It has everything you need, is well designed and well kept. Ideal for a couple with maybe one child, the pub and shop is a few.minutes walk,.and in the summer heat, the cottage keeps a perfectly cool temperature. Perfect for sleeping. Everything you need to know is explained in the booklets and the beach is a nice walk away. Parking at the beach is a bit dodgy, make sure you pay at the first 2 machines you see, it's designed to catch you out and pay a fine, I read many reviews including an action fraud investigation. Only improvements would be a slightly bigger TV , I felt.like I went back to the 80s, but everything we needed and could want was there.

Very pleasant . Comfortable beds . Lovely walk down Sea lane to Kilve beach . Babbling streams , peacocks , pack of Shih tzu dogs, cows , sheep , rabbits made our daily dog walk down the lane a delight . Really beautiful . Only negatives parking space about small and washing up bowl under sink needs replacing .

  • "A lovely cottage, very comfortable and well equipped."

The only negative was the bathroom that was freezing cold due to the window that doesn’t close properly and only the towel rail as heating. A shame the under floor heating doesn’t extend from the kitchen into the bathroom as that may help.

  • "We had a lovely stay, the cottage is spacious and has everything you need."

We completely understood the need to lock the heating to a maximum temperature, however it would be a good idea to provide extra blankets for the bedroom to accompany that. We ended up using the duvet from the single room as well as the double one to stay warm at night.

Thank you for your helpful feedback - much appreciated. There is a top quilt in the drawers on the landing for extra warmth, but we’ll take up your suggestion of buying some blankets (as well). Thank you - Jill. Property Owner

  • "The property was lovely beautiful setting."

Surrounding areas were beautiful too, lovely walks and a fantastic reaction down the lane. Downside was a problem with the toilet seat, which had been mentioned previously, my Husband mended it as best he could for our stay, but it really needs to be done properly. Owners were not close by but easy to contact.

So glad that you enjoyed the cottage and area. Just to say that we sent someone to fix the toilet seat the same day that you let us know. If we had known when it broke - we could have fixed it straight away. Thanks for your review. Property Owner

  • "A few basic items in the welcome pack and in the kitchen in general would be appreciated."

The parking bay is very tight, we have a van, so even more so for us! We think it's a little cheeky to include with 'an enclosed garden' in your search criteria, it's a courtyard. The area to the bathroom off the kitchen which is also the dining area is a little cramped and doesn't make for a nice eating area.

I'm sorry to hear that the cottage is not to your taste and you are very welcome to express your views; however, on this occasion I feel that it is necessary for me to clarify a few points for those looking to come and stay:- The garden is enclosed and is advertised as so as this is important for most dog owners, and as advertised it is also a patio garden (ie mainly paving & no grass) - please see the photos. The 'parking bay' is around 15' long - plenty of room for any car (even a van!) The cottage was a workers' cottage (part of the East Quantoxhead Estate) and the dining area is small (and for many this is part of the charm). We've had five adults sitting round the dining table - now that was cramped! Property Owner

  • "My partner and I stayed here with our two dogs and 10 month old daughter."

The single bedroom was just big enough to fit our daughters travel cot in (it is a rather large travel cot) and the double bedroom is lovely and spacious. The cottage is a short walk away from Kilve beach which was lovely for the dogs. The bath plug doesn't hold water in and it slowly seeps away. This wasn't too much of an issue for us as by the time the water had dissapeared we had bathed our daughter anyway. The shower was lovely, really good pressure and suited us just fine. There's an alcove in the lounge to the right of the fireplace and if your dog likes a safe space likes ours do then it's ideal! There is also a door at the bottom of the stairs to prevent dogs/ little ones from being able to go up which was fab for us. We had a really lovely stay.

  • "A lovely cottage and great for walks."

The only downside is the water issues. The bathroom sink and bath will not keep the water in . Plugs obviously don't fit too well. The kitchen sink hot tap is so slow it's better to keep boiling the kettle..uses more of their electricity. Not good at this time I would say. Other than that our stay was very relaxing .

Ilovely walks for Dog in area but had to drive to main spots Like watchet and mine head. Blue anchor beach a favourite with mutt. Very clean and comfy apart From Single bed which was AppArantly not very comfortable. A clean comfortable (mostly) place quiet and relaxing. Thank you for Letting us use it.

Glad you had a lovely week. The comfort of beds is such a personal thing. Both the beds have exactly the same mattress, and you found one to be comfy and the other not. The mattresses are 'medium' which apparently is the most commonly bought. Sorry it didn't work for you all. Property Owner

Slept really well as quiet and bed very comfortable. Close to great pub restaurant so big bonus. One tiny thing that sounds petty but is important: when we arrived there was only the end of a toilet roll and shops were closed. If there had been three of us that would have been a problem.

About the location

KILVE

Williton 5 miles; Bridgwater 13 miles.

The small village of Kilve is situated in the Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just five miles from the village of Williton and thirteen miles from the town of Bridgwater in Somerset. Kilve hosts a quaint pub, Post Office and shop for all your general needs, as well as the Old Chantry tea rooms, which are set in an ancient monastery. There’s plenty to see and do from the village, including a beach, just 1.5 miles away, from where you may be lucky enough to spot fossils amongst the rock formations. Your first point of call is surely to explore the Quantock Hills, known locally as ‘the hidden jewel of England’. At 9,500 acres, there’s open moorland and woodlands on offer, along with an abundance of wildlife. The town of Bridgwater is also within each reach, offering several buildings of historical interest and an excellent selection of restaurants and pubs, as well as the annual Bridgwater Illuminated Carnival in November, where the use of over 20,000 light bulbs result in a mesmerising display of colour, sound and entertainment. Also in the area are a number of other beaches at Watchet, Dunster and Minehead, historical places of interest, such as Montacute House, Dunster Castle, Barrington Court, Cleve Abbey and Glastonbury Abbey, as well as the cities of Bristol and Bath, which are well worth a visit. A lovely base for your Somerset retreat.
