  • "The house is comfortable and cosy - as in the photos."

We spent there wonderful time. Fully equipped kitchen allows you to spend nice time while cooking. You can find everything you need and much more in the house. There are board games, jigsaw puzzles and books. And of course indoor football :) The house is super clean and the owners are really lovely and very helpful hosts. And the views are amazing!

  • "This was our second stay at Poppy Cottage."

The fact that it rained every day and I had a raging tooth ache did not detract from the loveliness of this place. Upon arrival we felt straight at home, the peace, quiet and beautiful surroundings give me a buzz every time. Our puppy loves the enclosed garden and large kitchen, especially the little sofa that we cover with our own throws so he can relax whilst we are cooking and eating. The cottage is spacious, spotlessly clean, and so comfortable. We can really unwind here whilst enjoying Kerstin's homemade cake, which awaits your arrival along with a jug of fresh milk and tea/coffee/sugar so you can start enjoying your hols immediately. The hosts are a lovely couple and are at hand if you need them for anything. We will be back again next year for a 3rd visit. The cottage is well positioned for shops, walks, countryside, and coast. It's an amazing place, and we love it!

  • "We had a lovely stay in Poppy cottage."

The owners who live next door (but you hardly ever see them) are so welcoming and friendly and also full of ideas of things to do and made some good suggestions. There was a lovely welcome pack waiting for us including a freshly baked homemade cake which was scrumptious!!! Just everything about the cottage / stay was great. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything you would need, sofas were super comfy as were the beds. TV with freeview and Netflix etc, plenty of books, jigsaws, table football etc all provided too. Bathroom was fine with super water pressure which was really nice, good towels provided too. The outdoor space is kept lovely with outdoor seating areas, lots of birds to watch (we saw the woodpecker!), even a hot air balloon came overhead too. The garden is fully enclosed which suited our pooch which reminds me there are dog things too - blankets, bowls, bags, feedmat etc. You really couldn't want for anything and we highly recommend it, we'll definitely stay again one day 10/10 Places we visited (DF is dog friendly): Bickleigh Mill 2 miles away for great food and shop (daytime only) (DF) Fursdon house/ gardens 5 mins away – super cream teas (DF) Knighshayes house and gardens (some parts dog friendly) Crediton town 6 miles Minehead via West Somerset Steam railway (DF) Dunster - lovely old village, shops, castle, railway, beach Instow (good beach for dogs), Fremington (old railway walk, cafe) and Bideford Tiverton including the Grand Western Canal (lovely walks, cafes, canal boat trips) Dartmoor via steam train and then steam paddlesteamer (shopping, eating, steam buffs) (DF) Tarr Steps good for walks, river, pub, picnic (DF) Dawlish – beach, town Seaton and Beer - Seaton old tramway is a must! It was such a peaceful location! I would have liked to have signed a visitors book. It is always nice to read other visitor comments. The children enjoyed seeing the dog! They also loved the table football. Thank you for a great stay.

  • "We can’t wait to stay again!"

Poppy cottage is the most beautiful chocolate box cottage! Perfectly safe enclosed garden for our lovely little beagle. The cottage is carefully designed with large double height rooms in the kitchen/dining area and the living room. The decor is an eclectic mix of traditional (beams etc) and extremely tasteful modern. Everything you need for your holiday has been thoughtfully provided. The lovely homemade cake on arrival absolutely delighted the grandchildren. They were so happy with the very large garden outside of the enclosed one that they could run around safely to their heart’s content. The beds were so very comfortable that we all slept like tops! Poppy cottage is ideally situated to explore all parts of Devon, we have done lots of the coastal areas so we stayed more inland this time. The Donkey sanctuary near Sidmouth was very much enjoyed. (Free entry) The railway museum is more local and the children did enjoy it but we felt it was a little overpriced. Next up was The Bear Trail, a mud run assault course like Tough Mudder. Never was so much fun had getting thoroughly dirty!! The last activity was Go Ape in Haldon forest. I didn’t think the Bear trail could be outdone but everyone enjoyed climbing in the trees and the huge Zipline was the biggest hit! We would definitely highly recommend Poppy cottage for a wonderful Devonshire holiday. The hosts Kirstin and Dan live in the house behind the cottage and are so very welcoming and available if needed. Hercules is a gorgeous Labrador who visited twice a day to check in us but knows his boundaries and was never intrusive just super friendly. The girls(hens) were around and delighted the children when they were spotted but the safe and enclosed garden we had meant I didn’t have to worry about my pup chasing them. Don’t hesitate for a minute if you’re looking at Poppy cottage you will have a truly blissful experience there.

  • "We had the pleasure of staying at Poppy Cottage for one week beginning the 13th May."

Upon arrival you are greeted by lovely green fields and stunning thatched properties. A little drive in from the gate and you can see your accommodation. A delightful cottage with well kept, secure garden and bistro set. Our puppy was delighted with his playground and the his supplies of towel, rug, bowl and treats that were kindly supplied for him. Upon entering the cottage you are met with a bright, colourful airy kitchen with tiled floors and a delicious homemade cake, which started the holiday off a treat! All rooms, as shown in the pictures on the Sykes site, are decorated to a high standard; immaculately clean, and very comfortable. The bright pop of colour everywhere was to my taste exactly. We felt at home straightaway. The owners live next door, Kerstin and Dan, who are very friendly, but do not intrude at all, but are there if you need them for anything. Oh and don't forget Hercules, their friendly Labrador and the 'girls' (Hens) who you can sometimes catch sight off roaming the grounds. We had a fabulous time here, weather was kind too and it was hard to leave. We would put this in our top 2 choices for holiday rentals and we have stayed in quite a few over the last 30 odd years. Thank you for letting us stay at your delightful cottage and we would definitely love to come back!

  • "Whilst the owner's farm and house is just behind Poppy Cottage, they have positioned it to perfection."

You feel like you are completely secluded, facing away from the owners and looking out over the beautiful countryside but at the same time, they are there at a moment's notice to help with any concerns you may have. The garden is a sun trap and it was so lovely to sit out and enjoy the surroundings, watch the birds (including a cheeky Robin) and just unwind. We were lucky with the weather and were able to sit out right through the day until early evening, the aspect of the garden and cottage is that good. We were left in peace for our stay, the welcome was lovely: some home-baked goods and a personalised welcome sign. The cottage was spotless, bright and airy with some lovely décor touches and we immediately felt at home and comfortable for our stay. And the beds were so comfortable! Some simple and understandable house "rules" to follow, and plenty of local information including "in case of emergencies" numbers; nearest chemists etc. as well as things to do, which is a great help as other places I have stayed do not always think of that much detail. If you love animals, this is also a plus for you, their chickens "the girls" are adorable, and you will more than likely have a four-legged visitor most if not all mornings: a gentle and sweet Labrador called Hercules. All in all, my sister and I had a lovely stay there at Poppy Cottage and we would not hesitate to stay there again if we needed a place in that area. Totally recommended and our many thanks to Dan and Kerstin

The cottage itself is thatched so looks amazing, the Poppy theme is continued inside with poppy mugs and other bits and bobs, really nice touches. The ceiling in the main bedroom is very low but wasn't a problem for us for the week. The cottage is in stunning and peaceful surroundings, perfect for an early cuppa on the patio watching the birds and bumble bees or watching the sun set. Definately worth a drive out to The Beer Engine pub about 20 mins away as well, great pub with excellent beer and food. All in, this was a great week in and idylic cottage!

The glorious landscaped gardens of Killerton House make a truly lovely setting to enjoy a leisurely stroll, with over 6000 acres to be explored, whilst the Gothic Revival architecture of Knightshayes Court is well worth a visit; marvel at the period interior or get your steps in with a wander through the trees of this remarkable National Trust property.
