  • "I booked this cottage for my granddaughter and her 3 young children."

To say they were delighted with everything is an understatement. Coming from a city into the countryside was a revelation they were able to be up close and personal to lambs and chickens. I am sure it will be a talking point for a very long time. The owners were fantastic when the family managed to get lost. A beautiful cottage with everything and more for a lovely break.

Thank you for your lovely comments; I'm glad they all had such a good time! A note to future visitors: we don't always have lambs and chickens on site, it depends mainly on the time of year. Property Owner

Great communication from owner, advising us about a couple of things, also happy to help with lighting wood burner. Children loved seeing the sheep and feeding the chickens. Has everything you could possibly need for a really comfortable stay.

  • "Lovely house to stay in for the week and explore some parts of Somerset that we had been to before and new places to try walks in."

Richard gave us a lovely welcome and it was nice to try some of the eggs from their own hens. The hosts' cats were also lovely to see as we're cat people. One was quite friendly and had a sleep in my lap at one point! If the weather is good the patio area is a good size to sit outside in and enjoy the really lovely garden. The beds were really comfortable and the jacuzzi bath was a treat to try. The log burner was nice to have as the house did run on the colder side, although it wasn't the easiest of log burners to get going and we were only successful one of the nights. The electric heaters weren't exceptionally efficient with the house often being around 14 degrees and as cold triggers my asthma we had to leave these on for long periods of time. If you bring plenty of warm things - e.g. hot water bottle and slippers - it might not be too bad with these turned off and the hosts do provide plenty of thick blankets to help as well. Generally the house was clean with exception of the shower and bath where there were areas of black mould and grime on the shower heads. I cleaned most of it off immediately due to allergies but not what I expect on first arrival. It was really useful having access to an electric airer though because one of the days we got really wet and needed to dry clothes off. Richard also offered the use of their tumble dryer which was kind. A separate sink to clean shoes was also handy. We were pleased that good recycling options were available as we like to be sustainable where possible. We did find it odd though to be asked midweek to put the bins out for the hosts when we still had 2 - 3 days left in the house so the bins would have to be emptied again after we left. This doesn't seem very efficient and maybe the hosts could change the bins after a stay (so just one bin empty instead of two) and put the rubbish out the following week. The main improvement we felt could help with the stay is putting some shelves in the two bathrooms as there isn't really any space to put your toiletries out. There was only two of us staying so it wasn't a massive issue but I could see this being more of a challenge with more people in the house.

Dear Katy, I’m glad you enjoyed your stay in Goathurst and I thank you for your helpful comments. I’m embarrassed to read of the mould you found in the bathroom; I do give the house a thorough clean after every visitor and shall make sure that doesn’t happen again; my apologies. The ‘jacuzzi’ bath is always a great success! I’m sorry you had problems with the radiators and the fire; both take a bit of getting used to, but I do always ask people to let me know if I can help with anything during their stay and I would have helped you with these. Some groups make a lot more recycling and rubbish than you did, so I find it courteous to get it out of the way for our guests midweek, not just at the end of their stay. Happy future holidays! My best wishes, Richard Property Owner

Lovely walks locally and further afield. We shall definitely return without a doubt. Richard and Wendy were wonderful hosts and were very accommodating even with "unusual" requests. A very minor suggestion, to place a mirror somewhere near a power point for very fastidious ladies (one in particular) for hair drying purposes. Other than that all perfectly acceptable . We visited with 5 in our party, The Gardens was spacious, warm and comfortable with excellent facilities. The property is in a lovely rural, peaceful location and is great if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, but is ideally situated to explore beautiful Somerset. On arrival the property was spotlessly clean and finished to a very high standard. It is clear the owners have put their heart and soul into this property and had thought of everything a guest would need, they were so friendly and helpful too. • "We had some disappointment with the holiday not because of the accommodation, which was excellent, but with the knock on effects of Covid."

Some attractions such as Cheddar Gorge were closed and the many road works, no doubt delayed by Covid (such as the Somerset Railway) were truncated. Others made it difficult for us get to because of the consequential long walking distances from the car park. All three of us are walking stick dependant. Some cautionary notes would have been appropriate.

  • "The booking with Sykes was easy and the cottage we booked was well described."

The description of how to get to the cottage was a bit lacking in details but, fortunately, my son is an excellent map reader so we managed it with only one mistake. The cottage itself was excellent - in fact it is one of the best we have ever experienced during decades of cottage holidays. It was situated in a beautiful location, was spacious, private, quiet, in very good condition and was amply furnished with good quality items. The kitchen was also well equipped - again with good quality items (certainly not the end-of-line oddments that you sometimes find). The cottage was also warm with generous heating arrangements. My wife and I did find that the mattress in the double, ensuite bedroom was a bit hard but our grown up 'children' in the other 2 bedrooms had no problems with their mattresses. In all we would definitely give it a 5 star rating.

We were not blessed with the best of weather during our stay, so did not benefit from the use of the secluded garden or the orchard. However, we are sure we would have if the sun had been shining!! The cottage setting is in an idyllic quiet village, with many walks on the doorstep or via a short drive to enjoy the Quantock Hills and the surrounding beautiful countryside.

A safe and secure garden is available for your private use as well as parking space. Everything we needed was provided and we would certainly hope to stay again at some point.
