  • "The cottage was lovely; and the spectacular views were the high point."

It was also well-presented and to a good standard of cleanliness. The accessibility was the main drawback. We felt more comfortable using the camp-site exit, since it was less narrow and there was more possibility of passing places. We were disappointed that this exit was padlocked half-way through the week and that we were left having to struggle with the padlock in the rain and dark.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tom's House."

The property was very comfortable and had everything we needed for a perfect holiday in a beautiful location. It was peaceful and quiet but at the same time very close to Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and other places of interest we wanted to visit. The views from the property were amazing, we certainly wished we could have taken those views home with us. We will certainly recommend Tom's House to our friends and family and would like to return in the future.

Tastefully furnished to its character, extremely comfortable bed. Sian is a great host. The welcome basket was a lovely touch. She provided us with loads of useful information and was on hand if we needed anything, but unobtrusive if we were content to sort ourselves out. We really enjoyed our stay both in The cottage and In the area.

  • "Lovely property with great views."

Peace and quiet interrupted by dogs barking day and night but ok if you don’t mind that. The internet wasn’t working but appreciated the owner trying to remedy. I noticed a few other visitors had experienced the same issue so I should’ve taken more notice. This did affect my enjoyment as I could not communicate with friends and family as arranged over the New Year, watch iPlayer or plan my journeys and daily itinerary online.

Sian and Nic were really helpful and we will return. Just one thing! I have arthritis in both knees and the sofa was so low I had a problem with that! ….Michael had to pull me up from the sofa every time I sat on it as my knees wouldn’t take my weight! But we loved every minute and we stayed a full week.

The views of the sea and the cliffs from Tom’s House are spectacular and the situation is wonderfully peaceful. We enjoyed a visit from the resident gorgeous chickens and the dogs came to say a friendly hello too. There is plenty to see and do in north Devon, it is ideal walking country and at Tom’s House the coast path is practically on the doorstep. The internet is a bit slow and it is insecure, although it’s OK for reliable light use, preferably via a good quality VPN. We’re planning to stay here again.

  • "Such a beautiful and character cottage!"

The attention to detail with the gifts if jam yes and fresh cut flowers made us feel so welcome. The huge bed was bliss and to wake up with such a gorgeous view from the window was heavenly! The cockerel woke us a little early but that was part of the charm. The outside of the cottage was chocolate box pretty with pots and roses full of colour. The wifi was incredibly slow - less than 1Mbp. Sufficient to browse the web but not great for streaming! More time for reading and jigsaws. Highly recommend "Storm in a teacup " cafe in Watermouth harbour. The walk from the NT car park at Croyd to Baggy point was lovely. Great tea shop too! Cherry pie and clotted cream at Mother Medrum's in the Valley of the Rocks was the best. Two very different but equally beautiful gardens visited were RHS Rosemoore and Marwood Hill Gardens. Love all the little bays /harbours and spectacular cliffs. A wonderful relaxing break all round.

It has a wonderful atmosphere which makes you look forward to returning to it after each day’s outing. It would be very easy to stay put in this lovely cottage for days on end! The views from the property are absolutely amazing. It is situated in a very peaceful setting which is not at all upset by a cockerel with attitude. We looked forward to seeing him every day together with a lovely cat and several dogs, one of which was exceptionally sweet natured. Everything you could possibly need is provided at this cottage, the bed is wonderfully comfortable and the cottage is full of fascinating objects. The memorabilia connected with Terry Thomas is particularly interesting. We would be very happy indeed to stay at this smashing cottage again.

The cottage is perfectly located for exploring the north Devon coast, sitting half way between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. We also visited Woolacombe and Lynmouth which were stunning, as was the national trust at Watersmeet. Would definitely recommend staying here and hope to return soon.

It was very well equipped and the super king sized bed very comfortable. There was a lovely welcome pack of milk, apple juice, chocolate and chutney & jam, which was most unexpected. The cottage has a area of homage to Terry Thomas which is both unusual and delightful. Throughout the cottage there are interesting design features such as stained glass panels in the doors, niches in almost all rooms, beams galore and inset tiles making the place special. One can walk down to the harbour but it is quite a pull walking back up again! We enjoyed a wonderful week, despite torrential rain and strong winds on a couple of nights.

  • "This is a lovely cottage, which is beautifully furnished."

The cottage was a retreat for Terry Thomas and there is interesting memorabilia on the walls. It is in a quiet, tranquil location which is perfect for rest and relaxation, with views of the sea and coastline. The owners are very friendly and leave a tasty welcome basket of goodies in the cottage for you. It has a garden area with a picnic table and two reclined seats, where you can eat or just sit and enjoy the birdsong and occasionally be entertained by the local chickens. The local area is beautiful, with bays full of rock pools to explore and some very good eateries. Within short walking distance (though the walk back is uphill) is the Boat Cafe, where you can sample a delicious lunch or tea. It is only a short drive to Hele Bay and Ilfracombe for places to eat in the evening. I recommend the Hele Bay pub for excellent service and very nice food and the Grampus Inn in Lee, which is the other side of Ilfracombe, especially for a lovely lunch after exploring the rock pools in Lee Bay. I would definitely visit the area again and stay in Tom's Cottage.

The property

Berrynarbor 1.7 miles.

An interesting cottage on a 100-acre farm on the spectacular North Devon coast, surrounded by green meadows and overlooking the sea from its high vantage point above Watermouth Castle.

Formerly the holiday home of the actor Terry-Thomas, and with a welcoming feel throughout, this quirky cottage tells a story.

The ground floor sitting room is comfy while the kitchen is modern and colourful.

However the focus of the cottage is sure to be the spacious first floor bedroom, with a 6’ super king-size bed and amazing sea views across the channel.

The cottage is adjacent to the owners’ farmhouse but has its own private lawn with seating and sea views.

Guests are welcome to wander around the grassy 100-acre farm, which also has a discreet area for camping lower down the hillside, hidden from view but with a useful shop offering freshly baked croissants to order.

The cottage is a five minute walk from the coastal path, and a couple of miles from the unspoilt village of Berrynarbor, with a welcoming pub and village shop.

At nearby Ilfracombe, Damian Hirst's 'Verity' statue rests above the picturesque harbour, and the bustling seafront has many good-quality restaurants and bars along with small independent shops.

Explore Watermouth Castle, the award-winning Tunnels beach and Combe Martin Wildlife Park, all of which are close to the cottage.

The dramatic North Devon coastline will appeal to walkers and a fifteen minute drive from Berrynarbor is the 3-mile long sandy beach at Woolacombe which holds the 'England for Excellence Gold Award' for best family resort and was voted the Best British Beach in the Mail On Sunday.

A romantic retreat with breathtaking views.
