  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Three Squirrels - Lodge 14, the lodge has a lovely feel to it, and gives the appearance of being in a treehouse, the angle that the trees are outside."

I love the big windows looking out at the trees. It is really peaceful and a great space to relax in and unwind, with the option of sitting / dining either inside or on the wraparound decking outside. We really liked its location on the site, just off the path and down a short way, and there is a good distance between the other lodges. We cooked and dined in the lodge at times, as well as eating out. It was great to have a dishwasher and the kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils, cutlery, crockery, etc. We found it a great base also for visiting places, and ventured into Cornwall as far as Port Isaac (Doc Martin fame), Boscastle, Bude, as well as into Devon as far as Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, and locally visiting Clovelly, Hartland, Bideford, and the closest village of Woolfardisworthy. We also took a local walk into Hartland Forest. The A39 provides an excellent way to travel around Devon and Cornwall and is just a short drive from the Lodge. It was great to come back and relax at the lodge in the evening. We were really pleased with our accommodation and beautiful quiet location.

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Three Squirrels, were comfortable there and took advantage of all that the area has to offer. Thank you for your kind words. Property Owner

  • "Filthy disgusting dirty"

We are very disappointed with your comments as we take great pride in our property, as does our cleaner who looks after many lodges and is well thought of in the area. Her number is provided in the property so we wonder why you did not call her during your stay if you were so unhappy. Sykes has also asked you for evidence of your complaint, but this is yet to be received as no response has been forthcoming. Please note that it is 'spider season' so cobwebs are prolific at the moment and can appear from one day to the next. This does not constitute 'filth'. We do not feel that your complaint is justified. Property Owner

  • "Should have read the reviews before booking, They all seem to be accurate."

The lodge was damp and had only had a light surface clean. The outside sitting area was unusable. It was filthy and covered in bird poo. The rest of the decking had not been maintained and so became dangerously slippery when wet. The surrounding trees meant that the lodge was always dark and the lights were needed even when it was sunny. There is a lot of new tree planting so that will only get worse. Will not use Sykes again as they have ignored the previous reviews thereby demonstrating they only want their commission.

I am sorry you found the lodge not up to your expectations. I believe that the heavy rain in recent months contributed to the deck being slippery and the prolific tree growth. I have asked the site owner to cut back the trees and have had the deck pressure-washed and painted with non-slip decking paint. Property Owner

  • "To us this is no place for anyway disabled or not good on their legs as the lodge was down a sloping path a good distance from where we had to park."

So bringing down our luggage and food was quiet a struggle and spoiled the holiday before it started. But the lodge was comfortable clean and tidy nor so good on cooking facilities as the cooker oven did not work. Outside there was no nighe lighting and the lodges seemed to be very much under trees stopping out lighting and sunshine.Would not go there again.

Indeed, this lodge is not really suitable for disabled people. I am sorry you found it hard to negotiate the path down with your luggage and that this spoiled your holiday from the start. My housekeeper was not aware that the cooker oven has stopped working and she wishes you had phoned her so that she could have got it sorted out for you. Property Owner

  • "The lodge was very comfortable but very dark and it was necessary to have the electric lights on most of the time in spite of bright sunny weather."

It was also very isolated along a single track road .

Thank you for sharing your views. I'm glad you found the lodge comfortable. The site is indeed rural. With two decks it is possible to sit in the sun despite it not entering the lodge directly. I hope you enjoyed your holiday there and that you were able to explore and enjoy north Devon. Property Owner

  • "Points to consider: A flat trolley to use on arrival and departure dates, to make unloading the car to the lodge easier."

As parking nor car access to the decking was close to the lodge. Cobwebs build up need clearing. Otherwise very clean. Well equipped, may wish to consider a boot tray, saving messy boots\shoes dirting the entrance way. Some screws around the door carpet mat don't appear to be flush to the metal trim, I kept catching my socks or toes. Sofa nearest the kitchen seems to sink a lot, might be worth replacing or repairing firmness. Shower tray plug seems to drain very slowly, I was concerned that the water will leak over the top of the rim. Welcome pack could be out ready, I felt a bit guilty looking through drawers. Summary: I think the lodge is well equipped and enjoyed the peaceful setting. Nice touch that there is access to the fishing lakes for a walk and watch the wildlife. .

Thank you for your feedback. A boot tray is a very good idea! I have noted your other suggestions and will see what we can do. Property Owner

  • "On arrival we were not greeted by anyone, and didn’t meet anyone the whole length of our holiday."

The setting of the cabin was really lovely but inside was very different. The double bed was the worst we have ever been expected to sleep on. It felt like it was boards with no mattress! The sofas were extremely uncomfortable and we highly recommend that double bed and sofas need replacing. Such a shame as the setting is beautiful.

I am sorry your expectations were disappointed. Three Squirrels is a self-catering lodge with a key safe and it is just not possible for anyone, either from Sykes or myself, to greet arrivals. Regarding the mattress, it is a firm one but I think you will agree that comfort is very personal and I and others have slept very well on it. I could change it for a softer one, but I expect someone wouldn't like it either. Property Owner

  • "The property was well furnished and very clean."

However, there was a terrible smell of damp which needs attention. I had to wash everything on return to remove the smell. This is probably due to the back of the property being constantly in shade due to the tree foliage. It made the twin bedded room very dark and this suffered from damp the most. Everything else about the property was excellent and very well maintained and clean. Sykes should say that the property is very rural, accessed only by single track roads.

I am so sorry about the damp smell. I will see what we can do about that. I will ask Sykes to add your comment about access. Kind regards Property Owner

Very reasonable price for a weeks holiday. Wifi was good considering where the lodge was, all in all had a lovely week and would recommend.

Thank you so much for this feedback. I am so pleased you had a good break at the Three Squirrels. Annie Property Owner
