  • "Hector's House (Troy) is simply the best holiday property we have ever stayed in."

There are all the kitchen utensils, knives, crockery and saucepans you could possibly want. The beds are comfy, the house lovely and warm, the garden large and secure. It was clear that at some point in the recent past it was a much loved family home. The road is very quiet indeed with almost no passing traffic and having a parade of shops a short walk away is just the icing on the cake. In a way I wish we hadn't stayed here as it has set an impossibly high bar for future holiday cottages. They will all inevitably be compared to this and come up short. Fashion victims won't like the patterned carpets and dark wood furniture, but we loved the very traditional décor. If you are going to oven cook use the nice new AEG, not the range as it is simpler and easier. We would have preferred summer duvets on the beds.

  • "We arrived on a wet evening to discover a lovely cosy house and a cream tea waiting."

There was plenty of room for all of us and we had a really lovely stay. The weather was not particularly kind during our stay but we had usable days and always a warm home to return to. There are several National Trust properties within easy reach and we enjoyed the walk around Burrator reservoir. The Plymouth aquarium is a good wet weather attraction but it was quite busy when we visited. We owe a big thank you to the owners and would very much like to visit again. The house is very well equipped and had plenty to keep us occupied. It was nice to explore the garden and to see so many native flowers and plants on the hedge bank. Our visit to Cotehele House, on the sunny Friday, was certainly a highlight. There is so much to see and do there. We also enjoyed Yelverton and Tavistock. The Yelverton shops and Drake's trail are an easy walk from the house and managed to cater for most of our needs. I would definitely recommend 'Hector's House.

  • "As soon as we walked into this lovely warm, comfortable house it immediately felt like home."

We have stayed in many of Sykes properties and this must be my favourite. Large comfortable rooms felt like your own home - with the many thoughtful touches that come with living in a house for a long time. The kitchen for me was a dream - brilliant, two ovens (please see note below), a proper full height fridge swallowed all my vegetables/salads and soups. An absolute delight to cook in with every utensil you could think of. Very close to the Yelverton shops, in particular The Game Larder, where they have every assortment of pies and quiches you can think of, and for those not inclined to cook, they offer takeaway roasts. A really enjoyable, comfortable stay enjoyed by all age groups. My Mum has mobility issues and with flat access when she visited it was perfect. Loved the lounge with three large sofas and I think 3 armchairs meant we could all sit together in preferred seating. Thank you too for the Welcome Pack - appreciatively enjoyed by all family members after a long journey. One point that flumouxed me was the Oven Knobs on the Range - the majority of the functions have been worn off over time or are only partially visible. It was only by frantic googling and downloading of the specific range instructions compared to blown up photographs of the knobs I managed to save a family roast dinner. Hopefully you will be able to find replacements on Ebay.

  • "Beautiful old house perfectly situated to explore the area."

On our arrival it was so lovely to walk into a warm house with a lovely cream tea waiting for us. Lovely touch and much appreciated. The house decor is dated, however this absolutely suits the property, and it has clearly been lived in by elderly people at some point with many assistance aids fitted around. We all agreed it is probably the most comfortable, well equipped, warm and spacious house that we have stayed in. The garden is beautiful; we would love to visit in the summer and enjoy the outdoor space more, which our dog certainly did. The owners have thought of everything, even down to providing a dog bed, towels and bowls. It’s just a short walk to the local parade of shops, which includes a local pub, and slightly further on to the cycle tracks and the moor. Great location to explore further afield, Plymouth, Plymbridge Woods, Tavistock and of course Dartmoor itself, with splendid walks around Burrator Reservoir and Sheep’s Tor. We would definitely recommend staying here and would love to revisit. Thank you.

  • "Simply the best we have ever stayed in, spacious, clean, warm, extremely well equipped, ample parking and centrally located for our needs."

The beds were comfortable, the living room furniture was good and the kitchen had a wow factor and to top it off everything worked! Should we again visit with our extended family, we would make this our first choice.

  • "We enjoyed a fantastic January break at Hector's House."

The property is ideally located for easy access to Dartmoor and to Plymouth. There's also a parade of shops and a great pub within a very short walking distance of the house. The large, warm and extremely comfortable property is well appointed throughout with the thoughtful owners providing everything that you might need. The attractive garden is fully enclosed making it ideal for visitors with dogs and for sitting outside in warmer weather. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hector's House and hope to return again soon.

The house had everything you need and more! We had a one year old with us and they provided a lovely cot, a high chair and even put a stair gate in for us! We were there for a wedding and it was good to have such a well equipped house with an ironing board, etc! We were welcomed with scones and cream and some lovely Cornish tea, coffee and jam! Thank you so much!

  • "This is a wonderful house which has ample space inside and out."

The kitchen is the best equipped kitchen we’ve encountered and we’ve rented lots of properties in this area. Great location with easy access and plenty of parking. It is also suitable for this less able and my 84 year old mother appreciated the various supports throughout the property. Lovely welcome pack on arrival and we would recommend it.

  • "Am pretty sure that the house was previously a care home or occupied by elderly people."

The decor was very old world as was the furniture and bathroom fittings, but I must admit that we all felt very comfortable in the house. The rooms were very big and the beds were top class, furniture was highly polished and a couple of items could have been antique. Clenliness was very good, only one very minor item needed repair when we arrived that was the toilet roll holder. Equipment was second to none, everything that anyone could need and far in excess of expectations. Thanks for a very pleasent stay.
