  • "School House is lovely, full of character and much larger than expected."

Tastefully decorated throughout. Very clean and well maintained. Very well equipped kitchen. Very comfortable beds. Huge games room which is wonderful for children, they would never get bored. Beautiful location, just inside Dartmoor National Park with access to the moor virtually on doorstep but only couple of miles from Ivybridge which has everything. So peaceful too, only sounds are the babbling streams and birdsong. Highly recommend this place, one of the nicest we’ve stayed in.

  • "Lovely house in a beautiful area."

Gail was very sweet and left a bottle of wine and some fresh milk for us in the fridge. The house is equipped with everything you need. We found the kitchen very well stocked and loved the attention to detail. We were there in very cold weather, but the rooms were stocked with wood for the fire, blankets, and hot water bottles. The game room was great for days spent indoors, playing pool, Scrabble, air hockey, ping pong, or any of the other dozens of board games. The library has loads of books to choose from, too. In the evenings, the sitting room was so comfortable once we lit the fire. The garden was the best thing for our cocker spaniel and even though it's not fully fenced, it's big enough that Ruby never tried to get out. She had plenty of running space there. Plus, it was peppered with snowdrops, which was just beautiful. Really recommend this, and we will probably book it again, but do bear in mind that in winter, the house is quite cold. Plus, there's no phone signal in the house or the immediate area (though we didn't miss it, and the WiFi worked great), and the nearest shops are in Ivybridge, a 10-minute drive away.

  • "A stunning cottage that was lovely and warm in mid November!"

The snug that is mentioned on the website, but is not in the pictures, is very cosy, and the shower is epic! Turn left out of the gate and the moors are just up the (quite steep) road. Our Border Collie had the week of her life, which is the best recommendation I can give!

  • "We particularly enjoyed the relaxing environment, the wonderful garden and the spacious accommodation."

The interesting range of books in the library and the historical details showing it was once a small village school. It was very clean and well equipped.. the surroundings are beautiful and it is great for dog walking. There is some confusion about the signage for road closure and this might need clarification as it confused us and we took longer to arrive than we anticipated.

Kitchen needs an extractor...fire alarm went off with cooking sausages! Another saucepan would be useful. Also useful to state which day to put out bins for refuse collection.

  • "Lovely, spacious and very clean accommodation."

Garden is huge and although not secure for dogs the house is in a very quiet area so not a problem for us. It had some some stunning plants but was a little wild and little overgrown in places. It was absolutely ideal for my husband and I and 2 small dogs. Would easily accommodate 4 adults. Thank you for a fantastic stay - would definitely recommend to friends.

The large garden was much used and appreciated, so colourful at this time of year (mid May). The quiet location is just perfect, surrounded by pasture and woods with the open moor a short walk up the lane. Would thoroughly recommend.

One of the most comfortable cottages we have ever stayed in. Location perfect for the moors and all we could hear in the garden were the birds singing. will be back hopefully next year as still have plenty to see and do locally. lovely extra little touches too.

We much appreciated the welcome wine biscuits and tea when we arrived and the friendly welcome from the two ladies as we arrived a little early after a long journey. Our children loved the huge garden with lots of different areas to explore and we enjoyed wandering up the short (safe) road to Dartmoor to see the ponies. The house itself is lovely and very well equipped, and the garden is stunning. Harford was very peaceful and tranquil, but not too far to drive to places that we wanted to visit. We also really appreciated the Saturday changeover day, as travelling on a Saturday is so much better! Thank you for an amazing holiday, we would love to return one day!

Everything has been well thought out and every utensil possible is there. The games room is great especially for rainy days and the real bonus is the garden for the dogs. We felt right at home the moment we arrived. A fantastic location for the moors and also 3 beautiful dog friendly beaches- Mothercombe, Whitsand Bay and Bigbury on Sea. We can’t wait to return - Very highly recommended.

  • "Beautifully decorated and comfortable house with a lot of character."

The kitchen was superbly equipped for cooking. We and our dogs especially loved the beautiful garden. The dogs had space to roar around and chase balls and we loved relaxing amongst the spring flowers and looking across the valley and at the pretty church next door. The owners went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. We used the house as a base for walking a week of the 2 Moors Way as Dartmoor is a 20 minute walk up the lane. Highly recommend this, we hope to return.

  • "We loved the School House and really enjoyed our stay."

We'd love to come back again - which we rarely say about holiday cottages. The main part of the house was comfortable and very well presented and easy to keep clean with a dog that loved being in the wonderful garden! The bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen suited us very well. We also really enjoyed the games room, especially our 14-year old son learning the art of pool, which held his interest longer than the air hockey - although that was fun as well! The School House is an all-round super place to stay. Our only disappointment didn't relate to the property but instead the restrictions on dogs on Dartmoor (a short lead at all times). All very reasonable but we were perhaps a little naive about the springtime presence of ground-nesting birds. So just a word of warning to other owners of energetic dogs!

The house boasts great family space & facilities, inc. washer dryer, dishwasher, iron & ironing board , & even a barbeque for guests use (we’d brought our barbeque with us not expecting one to be there.) The owner/s really had thought of everything that guests could possibly need whilst on holiday, a real home from home. The standard of cleanliness for a rented accomodation was A++. Comfortable beds. The property also boasts a very beautiful large garden which is also great for children & dogs -if the weather is good. Log burners for those chilly evenings. Can’t really say enough good things about this property! Our party hugely enjoyed this fantastic holiday accomodation.

We would definitely consider returning to the School House in the future.

About the location

IVYBRIDGE

Plymouth 12 miles.

Often referred to as the ‘Gateway to South Dartmoor’, Ivybridge is set in one of the most beautiful areas of Devon and provides the perfect base from which to explore the county’s glorious coast and countryside. The town’s namesake, the Ivy Bridge, is a 13th century construction originally designed for packhorses and widened during the age of coach travel. Nowadays, it is a popular landmark on the town’s Heritage Trail, which also takes in other noteworthy historical buildings, such as a paper mill which remains Ivybridge’s major industrial employer. Some of the most architecturally pleasing sights in the town are the aqueduct, now a listed site, and the much photographed remains of a viaduct built by Brunel. This riverside town offers a great local shopping experience, with a variety of independent shops in the compact town centre making browsing a pleasure. When it’s time for a break, take your pick from the many cafés, tearooms and bakeries in the covered arcade serving delicious food and treats to help you recharge your batteries! Just on the brink of Dartmoor National Park, Ivybridge is ideally located to explore the 368 square miles of rolling hills, rugged granite outcrops and fresh, clean air. With over 450 miles of public rights of way, you’ll find enough walks to keep you busy for a year, let alone a week! If you’d like to mix it up a bit, cycling, horse-riding, climbing and kayaking opportunities abound. Nearby Wembury is the starting point for the Two Moors Way, a 201 mile coast to coast walking route which passes through Ivybridge and continues on through high moorland and deep wooded valleys, taking in some of Devon’s most unspoilt rural scenery. At 17 miles long, the Erme-Plym Trail is slightly shorter and leads in the opposite direction through some pleasant countryside, passing the pretty Hooe Lake en route. The area surrounding Ivybridge offers a fabulous variety of attractions and days out, from the stunning beaches of the South Devon coast, to the bustling city of Plymouth.
