  • "Access to the property was a little stressful."

Inside the property, it was quite dark, so quite cool. The disposal of all rubbish was a little confusing, so not at all sure we did all this correctly. Everything else was good. If it matters to anyone - it clearly showed an extra tv in one of the bedrooms, but there wasn't one there.

Weather wasn't great and probably not the best time of the year, but the gardens are a real pleasure to walk around and although no kind of a gardener, the huge variety of trees is unmissable. Comfort is very subjective and I personally find that nowadays most chairs and sofas are too low down and I can struggle to get up but that's my problem......

Delighted to have got 10/10 from you and that you appreciated the clock so much. It was very nice to meet you both. Property Owner

  • "Had a lovely stay at the Clock House which is very well equipped, comfortable and warm."

It could be mentioned in the description that the way to the cottage off the main road is a very narrow road with very few passing places and no lights. Following the directions supplied by yourself these took us up past the main house but the owner preferred that we bypass the entrance with the green railings and drive up to the entrance further up the road and turn into a gateway which is directly in front of the cottage. We also had a problem with flies. The owners are aware of this but haven’t addressed the problem. We had to use fly spray each morning before we went out and on our return had many flies to clear up, one afternoon there were more than 100, not what you would expect to do on holiday.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are sorry to hear about the issue with the flies but would advise that we have certainly done our best to address this by engaging professional help and carrying out works to the property. Cluster flies can be an issue at certain times of the year and this year has been particularly problematic due to a longer and milder Autumn than usual. We are pleased to hear your positive comments, we work hard to ensure all our guests have an enjoyable stay. Property Owner

  • "The Clock House is located in a beautiful part of Devon on the edge of Dartmoor."

The instructions to find the house and the key were spot-on, even in the dark. The gardens are wonderful and very interesting with lots of unusual trees and shrubs to discover, even in November, and the distinct areas of the property make it a delight to explore. The cottage was very clean and the bed we requested had been made up. The owners had kindly left some cake and laid the table out for afternoon tea - a lovely touch. There was plenty of wood for the wood burner (which the dogs loved), the kitchen was well stocked with equipment and utensils and the water pressure in the showers was excellent. We enjoyed the 2 local DVDs (Devon & Dartmoor) and the jigsaw puzzles. There were multiple entry points to the cottage - the side stable door was great for getting the dogs in after a muddy walk. My only request would be a very small length of hose attached to the outside tap to hose off the dogs if necessary, although we tried to do this before we got back to the house. The owners were on hand for any issues. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the cottage to anyone; there are plenty of great places to visit and eat - our highlights were The Ship Inn (Ugborough), The First & Last Bistro (Ermington) & Drogo Castle

The sole improvement for me, as a dog owner, would be a small secure area of garden for a late night comfort spot, rather than having to put the dogs on a lead and venture out into the dark! (The mobile signal is not wonderful, but that is not in the control of the home owner, admittedly.)

The only drawback in a hot summer - we could not have the patio doors open, because we had dogs with us and the (otherwise understandable) 'dogs on leads only' ruling even applies to the small area immediately in front of cottage, which is not enclosed.

The grounds are absolutely stunning and it was a real bonus being able to stroll through the gardens daily. The Clockhouse is very dark inside, due to its age etc and the floorboards upstairs are terribly creaky. This did have an impact on those sleeping downstairs as your sleep was disturbed every time someone turned over in bed above you. The kitchen is very well equipped which is another bonus. A nice gesture of milk and a piece of cake on our arrival. For those who love gardens this is a real treat. Owners left us to it which is what you want.

Everything is comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, it all feels like a real home. The gardens are truly amazing and having your own access directly on to Dartmoor is a real treat. We didn't use the car for a few days just exploring what was around us. As the garden was open for a couple of days we even had tea and cake in the tea room. Bliss! Having a downstairs bedroom with an en-suite wet room was perfect for me as I'm having mobility problems at the moment. The property has been thoughtfully designed making it convenient and comfortable for all guests whilst maintaining the historic character of the building. The disabled facilities and level entrance were ideal for the elderly and frail member of our party. The kitchen is well equipped to handle holiday cooking and the utility room is very useful. There are plenty of games, books and DVDs for rainy days and the only thing we would have added is a Smart TV or DVD but this really did not detract from our enjoyment. The hosts have provided a vast collection of local maps and guide books making the planning of days out very easy and we were especially grateful for the information about local dog-friendly beaches. The gardens are beautiful and peaceful and it was fantastic to have the freedom to explore. Lorna is an exceptional hostess and we very much enjoyed learning of the history of the estate and getting a chance to see inside her house. Finally, we took our two classic cars with us as we were attending a show whilst in Devon and Lorna very kindly allowed us to photograph the cars outside the house. We enjoyed being able to explore the beautiful and tranquil gardens at Lukesland. My father has difficulty walking long distances and standing for any length of time. The groundfloor of the cottage is all on one level which made it easy for him to get from the bedroom with ensuite wet room to the living room and kitchen/dining area - the shower seat in the wet room was extremely useful for him. Lorna and John, who own Lukesland, were very welcoming and it was very helpful to be able to order a delicious ready meal for our arrival. The gardens are open to the public twice a week during the Spring and Autumn but the cottage is tucked away at one end of the estate and so we didn't feel any invasion of privacy. Ivybridge is well located for exploring the South Hams area and is on the edge of Dartmoor. It has a great farm shop (Countryman's choice) at Endsleigh garden centre with delicious cheeses, butchers and pasties and a good local pub (Trehill arms) as well as a Tesco extra, very close.

The property

Beside one other cottage and disused barns 200 yards from the Victorian house at Lukesland, with its lovely 24 acre garden, is this cottage 1½ miles on the Dartmoor side of Ivybridge.

Light and roomy with the stunning surroundings, this is wonderfully peaceful accommodation for relaxing and recharging your energy levels.

Head through the stable doors into the hall and from here you will find the cosy sitting room with lofty ceiling and traditional wood burning stove and the efficient kitchen with space for family meals.

French windows lead out to your terrace from both these rooms.

For anyone who doesn't want to climb the stairs to bed, there is a handy downstairs en suite bedroom, with the other two bedrooms peacefully upstairs.

Above the sitting room is a gallery with an optional sofa bed, comfy seating and the gently ticking clock workings after which the cottage is named.

Your little terrace is a fine place for a barbecue, or go beyond to explore the woods, lawns and pretty glades around a central stream.

For walkers, this is a perfect spot with direct access to the open moorland of Dartmoor and the Two Moors Way footpath which starts in Ivybridge, and the River Erme valley is also very beautiful.

City fans will love Plymouth, a vibrant and buzzing place with theatre, cinemas and shops aplenty.

For bucket and spade seaside fun, beaches don't come much more lovely than Mothecombe, which has starred in several movies.

The Clock House is set in a unique and beautiful garden, yet with all the delights of Dartmoor and the South Hams beyond.

About the location

IVYBRIDGE

Plymouth 12 miles.

Often referred to as the ‘Gateway to South Dartmoor’, Ivybridge is set in one of the most beautiful areas of Devon and provides the perfect base from which to explore the county’s glorious coast and countryside. The town’s namesake, the Ivy Bridge, is a 13th century construction originally designed for packhorses and widened during the age of coach travel. Nowadays, it is a popular landmark on the town’s Heritage Trail, which also takes in other noteworthy historical buildings, such as a paper mill which remains Ivybridge’s major industrial employer. Some of the most architecturally pleasing sights in the town are the aqueduct, now a listed site, and the much photographed remains of a viaduct built by Brunel. This riverside town offers a great local shopping experience, with a variety of independent shops in the compact town centre making browsing a pleasure. When it’s time for a break, take your pick from the many cafés, tearooms and bakeries in the covered arcade serving delicious food and treats to help you recharge your batteries! Just on the brink of Dartmoor National Park, Ivybridge is ideally located to explore the 368 square miles of rolling hills, rugged granite outcrops and fresh, clean air. With over 450 miles of public rights of way, you’ll find enough walks to keep you busy for a year, let alone a week! If you’d like to mix it up a bit, cycling, horse-riding, climbing and kayaking opportunities abound. Nearby Wembury is the starting point for the Two Moors Way, a 201 mile coast to coast walking route which passes through Ivybridge and continues on through high moorland and deep wooded valleys, taking in some of Devon’s most unspoilt rural scenery. At 17 miles long, the Erme-Plym Trail is slightly shorter and leads in the opposite direction through some pleasant countryside, passing the pretty Hooe Lake en route. The area surrounding Ivybridge offers a fabulous variety of attractions and days out, from the stunning beaches of the South Devon coast, to the bustling city of Plymouth.

Note: From April to mid-June and mid-October to mid-November the garden opens to the public twice weekly.
