  • "Excellent pre arrival information from owner regarding house & parking facilities."

Owner was friendly & keen to make stay as comfortable & enjoyable as possible. A welcome pack of eggs, bacon & milk had been left in fridge. Cottage was warm & cosy with very homely feel -suitable for all year round holidays. We really enjoyed the log burner in the sitting room & the view looking out onto the sweet little back garden. The cottage is ideally located for all the village amenities.....coffee shop round the corner, pub opposite & for woodland walks & longer walks down to Hartland Quay. We had a delightful stay- thankyou Linda- and would highly recommend this holiday cottage.

  • "We arrived at cottage late, on a very wet, cold Saturday evening."

Parked up in the village car park and off we went looking for the cottage. In the email we received we were told to look for a black gate, just behind the house that sticks out opposite the pub. We couldn’t find this gate. And after walking around in the rain, we saw a wooden fence like gate, with the number 82 on and realised it was there (might be worth updating the description). The cottage itself is lovely and quaint. Just what you’d want and expect from a traditional style cottage, with the added bonus of having front and back enclosed areas for the dog and granddaughter. The downstairs of the property is really well thought out, and has everything you could possibly need. The Christmas decorations were a lovely touch, and made the cottage feel really cosy. The welcome gifts were also a nice unexpected treat! Upstairs doesn’t seem to be as well thought out as downstairs, and we felt the rooms could do with a bit of an update. Everything seemed a bit of a mish mash. That said, the beds were super quality, and extremely comfortable which is all you need really. My only real negative was the temperature of the upstairs. Yes, it’s a traditional stone cottage, which takes a lot to warm, but we slept in our pjs and dressing gowns most nights as it was freezing upstairs. I did message the owner a couple of times about this and she did turn the heating up. But warmth is a real individual thing, and what one person may feel is warm, another may not. And 20 degrees in Winter is not what I would call warm. The radiators were never hot to the touch, and we never saw the digital temperature above 19.5. The owner did supply us with a basket of logs and kindling, and advised us to use the log burner to warm the house. We spent an additional £50 on wood etc which did help warm upstairs and keep our grandchild warm. But I really don’t think we should've had to have spent this in addition to the price we paid for the cottage. No other cottage I have ever stayed in have I not had control over the temperature myself, and I didn’t like having to ask for the heat to be turned up. It felt like I was a child again, asking my parents to turn the heating up and then being told to put thicker socks on or a thicker jumper! I really urge you let your guests have some control over the temperature in the cold Winter months. I appreciate it’s expensive to heat the cottage, but it really makes or breaks the comfort of the stay. The village is lovely, and the locals are super welcoming. It’s a great location to explore Devon.

  • "This cottage was perfect for our stay, it's cute, quirky and well placed for day trips in a very lovely village."

The owner is an absolute sweetheart, great communication even prior to our arrival and some essentials left in the kitchen to welcome us were greatly appreciated. Yes the oven is noisy but it works fine, you need to lift the gate when you open it, none of those things impacted our stay. We took two kids and wifi wasn't an issue. Great set up for anyone taking a dog, hard floors which are easy to wipe down, safe, enclosed yard for late night toilet trips and not too many "dog rules" (only what you'd expect, no dogs on furniture, clean up in the yard). We were warm and comfortable and would definitely stay again next time we visit Devon. Thank you Linda!

) Beds very very soft but I guess it's personal choice. Overall decent accommodation lovely area, nice people just in need of a little TLC to make your stay perfect.

Hi I’m sorry that you’ve experienced these problems. No excuses except my personal diy man , my husband passed away nearly a year ago so finding it difficult to find trades to fix the gate. The current guests have let me know about the oven problem, apparently it works ok , so I’m in the process of finding an electrician to come and suss it out. My usual one is away I think. Haven’t had any previous comments on bed softness but it as you say is preference. I will put in a free standing mirror on the window ledge asap. Thank you for helping me improve the property going forward. Thank you for booking Best wishes Linda Property Owner

  • "Book with someone else."

No internet all week, raised with owner who was less than useless/clueless. She even asked me to install the replacement router on last day of holiday! With teenagers and elderly parents, couldn't use smart tvs, internet speak and relied on data use. The twin room is NOT a twin as bed on left side of picture advertised is a makeshift child bed suitable for up to 5ft person. We stayed during the colder/wet spell 1st week of Aug and heating was locked so couldn't take chill away from the DAMP rooms upstairs. Smoke alarm was disabled. King size double is two twins put together. Photo and text message evidence sent to SYKES as part of complaint. Owner refuses to accept any responsibility but is happy to take quite a lot of money for a weeks stay. Am pretty sure the owner will post a dismissive reply stating I should have raised all these issues at the time but my argument is you have a week, make the best of it, don't spoil holiday time and take it up on your return...that's why customers are asked to feedback and customer relations departments deal with post event complaints. I am an honest reviewer and renter, who works in the travel industry, travelling all over the world... This is the worse rental experience I've ever encountered purely because of the owners inability to accept failure to deliver on advertised expectations. SYKES need to remove the property photos and update description to reflect the truth is mis-advertising. I'm not letting issue drop and now considering legal claim using trade description act/miss selling and consumer legislation.

Thank you for booking. You raised the issue of the lack of internet. Which I addressed and we discussed at the time. I did all I could and contacted the supplier as we also discussed. Other issues you didn’t mention to me and Sykes cottages spoke to you. I’m very sorry you didn’t have a good experience. Property Owner

The shower wasn’t great but we were made aware of that beforehand so no issues there- hope you manage to get it sorted because I suspect some people might moan about it. Really lovely place and location next to three pubs, a dog walk, a fish and chip shop, a shop and a coffee shop, all within 2 minutes walk, was just amazing! We would like to move in! Thank you.

Thank you for your review. So glad you enjoyed your stay. Hartland is a lovely village with very friendly people, lots of nearby facilities and businesses, and in a great area with many beautiful places to explore . Sorry that the shower was a problem. • "The property smelt very strongly of damp when we got there."

The heating was not on for our arrival it was cold and damp. The heating in the bedrooms didn’t come on and in the dining room it only came on for 10 mins during our entire stay. The photos make it look much nicer than it was. The stairs are a hazzard so narrow you have to come down them sideways. The bathroom is outside by the back door again very cold. I would never recommend this cottage to anyone. A plus is that the village of Hartland is lovely.

Heidi I was very surprised to receive your comments as they are completely the opposite of what our other guest’s feedback about comments on our cottage. The following facts are relevant. The cottage has been in constant use since April this year and I don't think that any damp atmosphere could have been present, particularly with the relatively warm temperatures that we experienced in September. Furthermore, in the detailed instructions sent to you days in advance of your visit there is a paragraph that reads (there was also a hard copy in the Cottage): “We have recently replaced all of the storage heaters in the cottage with more modern electrical radiators that are able to provide heat throughout the day. These have been programmed to provide an ambient temperature of 20 deg C in the morning and from late afternoon in the downstairs rooms and the same temperature in the morning and late evening in the bedrooms. With this new heating system we would very much appreciate some feedback as to whether the programming has worked to make you comfortable. If it is set too low or too high please do tell us – by email or text. “ Our heating records for the week that you were there show little electricity use as it is clear that the latent warmth in the property was sufficient without having to make extensive use of the electric heaters to get to the desired 20 Deg C temperature. We have individual room records That show : Dining Room - over 20 deg C all week Lounge - heating kicked in at 6pm on the 24th September and maintained 20 deg C throughout the rest of the week with active heating taking place each morning and evening Landing – temperature cycled around 20 deg C all week with little electrical heater demand Main bedroom – slight drop overnight (as expected) but heated to 20 deg C in early morning and late evening Twin Bedroom- same as Main Bedroom Super king Bedroom – same as Main Bedroom At no time did you contact us to sort out your problem which we would have been able to do instantly. There is also a wood burner stove in the property in the lounge filled with wood if you were cold but you do not mention this in your criticism and from the heating records it appears that this was not used. You also mention a cold bathroom but our instructions also advise that there is a heated towel rail that can be switched on and there is also a wall mounted fan heater that warms up the bathroom remarkably quickly. I shall finish this response by stating that we had an Owners Week immediately preceding your hire week and there were no issues with the cottage or the heating system. Property Owner

  • "We had a fabulous stay here over half term."

2 adults and 3 children plus a cocker spaniel. Lovely welcome pack in the cottage on arrival. All beds were super comfy and everyone slept well. Kitchen is very small with almost no storage space for any food you bring, also no washing machine (first self catering cottage I’ve stayed in which doesn’t have one). The stairs are very steep/shallow (which maybe an issue for older people) and the bathroom is on the ground floor. The stairs are very steep with low ceiling and the bathroom is on the ground floor. The garden is enclosed and safe for the dog but no grass however lovely dog walks just 5 mins away. The village is lovely with pubs and shop. There is no parking at the cottage, however the public car park was just around the corner which is free. This could be busy in peak season. We would recommend a stay here and would love to visit again.

Hi Karen, Many thanks for your comments and really please that you enjoyed your stay in our 200+ year old cottage. We considered having a washing machine but opted for a dishwasher instead which we believe is more important and useful for what are predominately 1 week stays - all details of what is provided in the cottage are on the Sykes website. You are correct that the free public car park does get busy in the summer but we have not had a problem parking there or relatively close to the cottage in the surrounding streets - we provide all guests with a map of the best places to park. David, Thanks for your feedback. The heating times have been increased upstairs and now come on earlier than before. As previously explained in my initial email this is a newly installed heating system and we particularly welcome the comment on your heating comfort as we try to get the balance right. This is a 200+ year-old period cottage and the character is such that the bathroom cannot be increased in size. Dawn We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our cottage and fully concur that Hartland is a really friendly village with great amenities. All pubs and cafe are now open again and we hope that this stays that way. We set the wooodburner for each set of guests and provide a full basket of logs and advise that, should you need more, then firewood is available to purchase from the village shop around 100m away. We shall make this clearer in the instructions that we provide in advance of guests arriving. We have also recently installed a new heating system so that the cottage is warm even if the woodburner is not in use and have received positive comments about this improvement. Property Owner

There are lots of amenities in the village - f&c, cafe, pubs, shop, post office etc. The garden was good for our dog. Our only suggestion and it is minor, would be for a bolt to be put on the inside of the front garden gate as we were worried that the gate would come open or someone would leave it open and our dog would get out onto the road.
