  • "The description of the cottage was good and it was very well equipped, especially the kitchen, although I was unable to find a hairdryer."

The cottage was clean and tidy on arrival and the booklet of information basic, but useful. It was great to have the linen and towels provided too. The garden was a good size, nice seating, which we used when the sun was out and secure for the dogs. It was a surprise to see the peacocks wandering about. There was a very nice park with a children's play area locally. The directions were very useful but we did get confused looking for a black gate - it's no longer black, the neighbours were helpful. We enjoyed a peaceful and restful stay. Thank you

Kitchen has everything in it you’d need. We had a few issues with heating whilst we stayed but our contact for the property and the owner were both very helpful

  • "We had a wonderful week at Quist Cottage the garden was perfect for the children and dog to run around and not worry."

The visiting peacocks and other birds made it more exciting. The table tennis and darts in the playroom kept kids and us quiet! Old house with real character tucked away at the end of a lane made it very peaceful. Nice village and park opposite for walks and playground. Left feeling refreshed. Plenty of books to read too! Would stay again if in Somerset.

  • "Loved it. Clean and spacious property."

Good wifi in most rooms, Netflix and even have a piano. Lots of character and lovely big garden, with enough trees and bushes to play hide and seek with the dogs. Hatch inn, couple of hundred yards away, very welcoming - had a few meals and drinks there and very dog friendly. Lots of interesting locations/walks etc nearby.

  • "The house and grounds were perfect for our stay."

We held a family party while we were there and the children played happily in the gardens, climbing trees, playing hide and seek and generally doing what children should do. The house is exceptionally well equipped with everything we needed and the large fridge/freezer was a blessing. Upstairs the roomy bathroom helped with small children and there was plenty of room for us all to have our own space but get together when we wanted to. The village is beautiful, with a play park across the road and lots of lovely walks. The Farthings hotel is wonderful for an evening drink or a beautiful supper and the pub down the road is friendly and family orientated. I would recommend Quist Cottage unreservedly.

  • "The area is not particularly good for dog walkers who are looking for: a."

Long country walks, as the styles are not dog friendly and in some cases were blocked or locked by farmers. b. a local field to let their dog off for ball throwing etc. The only community field in the vicinity calls for dogs to be kept on a lead. If you want to use the restaurant facility for the Farthings Hotel immediately adjacent, then you really need to book. Not because the place is that popular and there will be a lack of room; but because the owner guests stressed out if everything is not planned and lined up to his liking (told us he'd serve us in about half an hour if we wanted to come back, but made us feel most unwelcome - so we voted with our feet). The fish and chip wagon comes along on a Wednesday, but not when they're on holiday. Not sure how you get to know though, as there's nothing mentioned on their website so we were unfortunately wandering the village looking for them and only to be disappointed. Quist Cottage itself is becoming a little tired now and probably due a good spruce up, but to be fair it's got a lovely garden and is exceptionally well equipped. Generally, this is a lovely location and ideal if you're looking for peace and quiet, but still within a short drive to shops and restaurants.

  • "Really enjoyed our 1 week stay here in July 2020 just after National lockdown 1."

Lovely cottage and gardens in a beautiful area. Lots of room in the cottage. We spent most of our time when we were at the cottage between the kitchen and the garden. In the kitchen area there is the large dining table and chairs and a handy sofa and TV. We spent a lot of time in the evening in the games room playing table tennis and darts. We were very lucky with the weather so were able to enjoy 2 or 3 barbecues and we cooked at the cottage (kitchen utensils were abundant) apart from one evening when we ate out. Fantastic area for exploring. We visited the Watchet area on Bridgwater Bay, Lyme Regis on Lyme Bay and many places in between. I'd recommend the cottage and the area and would go back myself.

  • "Just a lovely location, very private, everything you need to have a great holiday."

Plenty of kitchen equipment, very sociable eating area. Garden full of birds, little seating areas to have a coffee and enjoy. Quirky without being too quirky. Built for country living with washable Hall and kitchen floors, plenty of books though, in the cozy lounge /Reading room or as we made it, the quiet zone!

  • "Quist Cottage is a very spacious well equipped holiday rental situated in a small village with a pub and a hotel (both dog friendly)."

The cottage is very old property and the age is reflected in the fabric of the bulding and the fixtures and fittings. Overall we were very comfortable here and enjoyed exploring the surrounding areas. Owners of small dogs should be aware that the large garden is not secure, both our dogs got out - one through a gap in the fence and one under the gate!! The hotel next door has a muster of Peacocks who regularly visit the garden of the cottage, not great if you have a terrier.

Bigger than we expected with a lovely garden. We enjoyed seeing the peacocks from the hotel next door including one baby. There was everything we needed at the cottage and the village had a lovely pub, the Hatch Inn where we ate a few times. The greyhound pub was also good and a short drive away. The cottage was ideally situated for the Kings cricket festival where our grandson was playing cricket each day.

It feels like a home . Not pretentious or anything like that. The stone floor is a joy for dog owners and easily swept. My husband was overjoyed to find a really good selection of books. He refused to come out with us on one day because he was stuck into Bring on the Empty Horses by Niven and wanted to finish it. He said that it was lovely to relax on his own. I hope we can stay again there. Yours, Jo Franks

  • "Quist Cottage was charming, a sweet, well situated cottage in a lovely village."

The facilities were very good and the house was very well equipped. The only slight problem was my sister and brother in law found the small double and single bed mattresses uncomfortable. Our double bed was fine, on complaints from us. The information regarding things to do and see were comprehensive and the local pub and fish and chips on a Wednesday were second to non, the pub was full of life with friendly people to chat to. Our dogs loved the holiday, particularly the garden and Exmouth beach which they were overjoyed to play on with no restrictions. A lovely holiday, thank you.

The property

Situated on the edge of the Blackdown Hills between Taunton and Ilminster in the peaceful conservation village of Hatch Beauchamp lies Quist Cottage, a stone-built, semi-detached, period cottage tucked away at the end of a small lane in the heart of the village offering a large private garden with plenty of space to relax at the end of the day’s exploring.

The Jurassic Coast, Exmoor, and the Quantock Hills are within a 40 minute drive of the dwelling; the village is ideally located for a West Country holiday while the surrounding Hatch Beauchamp is full of Somerset’s famous cider orchards and rolling farmland.

The cottage has been designed and furnished with relaxation in mind whilst the large and well-equipped kitchen/diner welcomes you with a warm glow from the woodburning stove, a farmhouse dining table, smart TV and a small sofa.

In the spacious sitting room, you’ll find a piano, plenty of games and a large smart TV and DVD player, as well as a selection of classic films and plenty of interesting books to keep you occupied on your days in.

Climb the stairs to the first floor, home to three attractive bedrooms: one king-size, 1 super king size , and a bunk bedroom best suited to children; guests will also benefit from a spacious family bathroom on this floor and a ground-floor cloakroom with a basin and WC.

Quist Cottage also has a rustic, unheated games room with a table tennis table, dart board, and equipment for a range of sports including tennis cricket, badminton, and boules, as well as a handy utility room to freshen your clothes throughout your stay.

Step outside; the large lawned garden has plenty of trees and interesting hideaways for you to explore, alongside a paved patio with table and chairs for when you fancy a spot of lunch outside on those warmer days or even your evening meals in the last of the summer sun using the barbecue provided.

This garden offers plenty for nature lovers - a spotted flycatcher regularly nests here and woodpeckers, buzzards and a host of smaller birds are daily visitors; if you’re lucky you’ll even see a fallow deer in the wood at the end of the garden, but be sure to keep an eye on your four-legged friends as the shrubbery can see some gaps throughout the year.

The village pub, the Hatch Inn, is within 200 yards and even closer is a country house hotel with bar, restaurant and gardens.

Close by, the village playing field and cricket pitch is a short walk away, which also hosts a children’s playground for their entertainment.

Ilminster is the nearest town, and is full of surprises for the curious traveller, discovering a mix of antique shops, wonderful butchers, and some interesting boutiques alongside the usual essentials including supermarket, chemist, bank and post office while Taunton is the county town of Somerset and is a bustling town with a splendid museum, plenty of excellent shops and restaurants, and is the home of Somerset cricket.

The aforementioned Jurassic coast is a short drive away, with numerous sand and shingle beaches, rock pools, and always the chance of finding your own million-year-old fossil, whilst the many towns and villages on the coast include Lyme Regis, West Bay and Burton Bradstock offer everything from arcades and mini golf to beautiful cliff walks, windswept beaches and fishing trips.

With coast, country, adventurous activities and many National Trust houses and gardens all within easy reach, Quist Cottage is the perfect location for a traditional break in the lovely county of Somerset.
