A hint for the en-suite use the trouser hangers & hang the blanket in the doorway this makes a perfect door!

  • "Quiet location."

Local village shop has closed down so nearest Supermarket is in Okehampton, although the Shell Garage as you come off the A30 does have a small Waitrose. Very comfortable with the exception of the bedroom/en suite. Extractor fan to shower not powerful enough to extract steam when showering, needs door between bedroom and bathroom. The filter on the shower tray was blocked with hair so water came over the tray on to the floor so we had to clean it out and was then ok. As mentioned by previous guests, a curtain or frosted glass should be on a ground floor bathroom for privacy in this day and age and also to block out the early morning light for those who have trouble sleeping if not completely dark!

  • "We enjoyed our stay at “Woodlands”, the property is very spacious & secluded, & ideally suited if you want a really “peacefully quiet” location."

It’s location means that you will need to drive at least one hour to any of Devon's main attractions, or into Cornwall, though Dartmoor is very close. The property itself was clean, though not spotless, it is comfortable, though one of the wicker chairs in the conservatory was badly split on the arms & was therefore uncomfortable. I would also mention that the bedroom next to the main bathroom had a very firm mattress, the other two beds had softer more comfortable mattresses. The cottage was well equipped, though the dining table really needs to be replaced with something more in keeping with the other furnishings. A lack of a few other things would be a definite improvement, such as: an extra larger frying pan, a serrated edge bread knife, a potato masher, some oven gloves, a mixing bowl, & a fruit bowl. Also there were no pillow protectors in two of the bedrooms, & one bed did not have a mattress protector. The main bathroom had a glass fronted cabinet on the opposite wall to the sink, which was below a window with a sill, but for the men that need to wet shave, there was no mirror above the sink. Also, the en-suite walk-in shower did not drain very well, & if not monitored closely, can fill up the shower tray & spill over onto the floor, there was no window blind, & in my opinion, there should be a privacy door to the en-suite. One of the most important things that we found strange (we have rented several cottages over the years) was the lack of a written welcome, which could/should include instructions for how to turn on the hot water & heating (it was quit cold the week were there, but I did manage to work it out), also, there were no instructions on where to put black rubbish bags, which were supplied. Important point to note is that because of the cottages location, mobile phone service is very poor or non existent, we could not get a signal all week with O2, but the wifi worked all the time, but was a bit slow. The welcome pack of milk, scones, clotted cream, strawberry jam & butter was much appreciated, & the fresh flowers was a nice touch too.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and we are pleased to hear that you appreciated the thoughtful welcoming touches at this peaceful property, as many other guests have done. It is useful to know about the few maintenance points you mention: and of course mattresses are a matter of personal preference. Rural locations might not offer the network coverage and wifi speed which you might experience in a city but the Reservations team are always able to answer any queries you might have regarding this prior to booking if this is a deciding factor. The handy map at the foot of the listing makes it easy to decide if this is the right location for your needs. Property Owner

  • "Whilst we appreciated the Easter buns, milk and butter that was left for us we felt that the cottage lacked a book of information regarding the working of the bungalow and local attractions."

We would also note that there was a scarcity of toilet paper (requiring a trip out after we arrived) one dishwasher tablet and no black bags for the rubbish/ dirty linen. The onsuite toilet/ shower needs a window blind or obscure glass to give some privacy and perhaps a door. Bit of a shame as the bungalow was very comfortable and warm and just needed a bit more care and attention.

Thank you for your review: and it is good to hear that you enjoyed the welcome at Woodlands. With self-catering properties while a starter amount of essentials such as toilet roll and dishwasher tablets might be provided the expectation is that guests will purchase their own supplies thereafter. The owners are aware of your feedback: due to the exceptionally secluded location the ensuite window was left with clear glass. It's reassuring that you found the property comfortable and warm, otherwise. Property Owner

  • "We had a good week in this spacious, countryside bungalow."

We wanted somewhere with a good kitchen and a wood burner. There is a lack of some basic kitchen equipment but when we approached the owner a tea pot and casserole dish were provided. The wood burner was efficient but the lack of fire tongs made the use of it somewhat challenging. The dining room table is rather small but was easy to move into the conservatory which is a lovely space. As there were just two of us, the seating worked fine and would be good for four but with only 2 pairs of chairs in the conservatory and lounge seating for 5 people we can’t see how it is suitable for 6. The sofas are very comfortable and the reclining features were appreciated. Others have mentioned the poor Wi-Fi so we were prepared for that but with neither of us having a mobile signal either, we felt vulnerable. We wouldn’t have booked this had we known. The bathrooms are excellent but the en-suite ( actually to the main bedroom) is completely open to the room which rendered it unusable to us. The other two rooms have double beds ( blinds not curtains) so with no twin room this might limit the possibilities for families with young children. The location is peaceful and the garden is a haven for birds. Regular visits from squirrels and rabbits, pheasants, a fox and a couple of deer were lovely. The nearest village is 2 miles away and has a good pub but you need to drive as the lane is narrow with high banks in places, as is typical of course.

  • "We had a very peaceful, warm and quiet stay."

Woodlands is spacious and there were only two of us. Six people or families would not get under each other's feet. Bathrooms, kitchen and living room are nicely, newly decorated and all other rooms are fine. The conservatory is quite a feature, and the garden is big too! Internet access is a little more than limited as the property is in a very secluded area. The kitchen is well equipped with just about all one needs. We would just make the point that bedroom linens were not of particularly good quality, but we did not pay an absolute fortune for our off season week. However a little TLC is needed and the property could have been cleaned more thoroughly prior to our arrival. Apart from all this, it is well situated for access to Dartmoor National Park, the main towns and, Cornwall. The welcome pack was thoughtful and very welcome.

  • "A large detached bungalow set within acres of its own grounds."

The property is completely private and noise free. The property is very spacious and warm (we went in February). It is a short drive from Okehampton. Walking south from the property there are some great walks that take in views of the hills of Dartmoor and Exmoor. The property would be great for families with young children as there is so much space to play and explore, just be wary of the steep sided stream that runs through the garden. We met the owner briefly who is friendly and helpful and leaves you to your own privacy.

Very nice welcome pack, thank you. We had an issue with the Wi-Fi when we arrived which was quickly dealt with however due to the remote location of the property the Wi-Fi is very slow. Midway through our week the Sky TV stopped working and unfortunately, despite the owner trying to get an engineer to fix the problem this did not happen until the last afternoon. Thanks to PJ (owner) and Sandy for their support and help during the week. Thanks for the loan of the casserole PJ.

Northlew is a Devon village on the edge of Dartmoor. It has an attractive main square surrounded by traditional buildings, some of them thatched; just off the square are a pub, useful community shop and Post Office. The village is 5 miles west of the ancient town of Hatherleigh, consisting of cob and thatch cottages situated in the heart of rural Devon. Hatherleigh lies in the Torridge Valley just seven miles from the edge of the Dartmoor National Park, and is a wonderful central location for the coast to coast long distance trail, which includes the popular Tarka Trail. The town itself offers a varied selection of interesting craft shops, country inns and cafes.
