  • "We have enjoyed our 2nd visit to this charming property and loved every moment."

It was a chance to completely unwind in such a beautiful cottage. It had everything we could possibly need and was spotlessly clean. We enjoyed some lovely walks which were right in the doorstep.

A well stocked kitchen and cosy house. A short distance to the beach and coastpath gives plenty of opportunities to keep busy. Thanks so much

The cottage is always comfortable. This year we noted 2 new sofas which were fresh. We may have missed the bbq utensils but they would be a good addition? We also put the bins out on the required day and they weren't collected? We have booked for another year. Such a beautiful place and now our family holiday destination. Thank you

  • "We have enjoyed time in August for six years in this property and are appalled that the day after we returned home endeavouring to book for 2023 we were told that the property was unavailable for anytime in August or July and had already been let."

Obviously we were not expecting to have any priority but would have thought that we might have been offered it or at least given the opportunity to rebook as usual.

  • "This is an extremely well appointed holiday cottage, in the delightful Hope Cove."

We very much enjoyed our week, with lots of walking and reminiscing about my childhood holidays here in the 1960s. I would highly recommend this cottage, it's in a perfect tranquil location with plenty to do and see locally. I hope to return next year, thanks to the owners for sharing their holiday home.

  • "We absolutely loved the cottage, although in the end we were a party of six adults and a toddler and we felt that the house was almost at capacity."

The downstairs area seems rather too small to accommodate eight adults comfortably. Of course, it is ideal for families. The cliff top walks, the sea, the seals and the sunsets were just amazing. The cottage is fantastically well equipped and very clean. Lovely tokens of welcome from the owners too. Many thanks, much appreciated. Hope Cove is very lovely, and we feel sad that the current difficulties are preventing the pub and restaurants from opening as they would like. The village post office/ shop stocks only the barest minimum of tinned and packet foods and no fresh fruit of veg at all. There was no bread for sale while we were there, but they do a nice line in pasties, if you're quick. Our advice is to bring your own supplies at least for the first day or two. Our only other comment is the lack of recycling boxes available for No 4 Coastguards, as all the other houses seem to have them. We regrettably had to throw some recyclable items into the main bin.

  • "The cottage was in such a perfect location and was exactly as expected."

Its was quiet and off the beaten track. The cottage had all amenities as listed. We thought it might be helpful to have a few room fans to keep temperature comfortable at night? We did feel the level of cleanliness could have been better. Finger nail cuttings were found in a bedside draw and odd bits of litter not picked up in the rooms. However although this is helpful to note for the cleaning company it did not detract from our fabulous holiday in Hope Cove. We would definitely return again.

Thank you for your feedback on your stay in Hope Cove. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your time there in our property. With regards the fans to keep the temperature down at night, as you can understand in summer and with the continuation of the warm weather we have been having, it can be hard to keep the temperature low. We will speak to the owners and suggest the addition of fans, and also discuss the level of cleanliness with both them and the housekeeper to see if we can get it to a more acceptable standard. • "Cottage was lovely but I'd suggest listing should be clear there is parking for 1 car only as cottage sleeps 8 people."

I also think given the price an expectation that guests should sort, bag up and log their laundry before they leave is unreasonable - this is not expected in hotels, so looks like a ruse to use the pandemic for a cost saving on the cleaning.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback Laundry - due to COVID-19, our cleaners and the laundry staff have to avoid contact with the laundry for 2 days at the end of each letting, this is why guests are asked to bag up the laundry. We apologise for any inconvenience but we are following guidance that applies to all properties in order to protect the cleaning staff, and are grateful for the support of our guests in this regard. It’s location is wonderful, so close to the sea. Hope Cove is a peaceful picturesque village with character. The property

4 Coastguards Cottage is a big house in a row of five in the little village of Inner Hope 1/3 mile from Hope Cove.

Close to the beach and Coast Path, it is roomy accommodation converted from two coastguards’ cottages in a picturesque setting.

Head up the steps to the front door and you will find yourself in the big kitchen with a dining table to seat everyone, or go on through to the welcoming sitting room with its cosy traditional wood burning stove.

At the end of a fun and busy day on the beach head upstairs to sleep peacefully in four bedrooms sharing a family bathroom and the downstairs shower room.

You have plenty of outdoor space to front and back of the house, with a safely enclosed garden at the front with lawn and a barbecue and outdoor furniture on the patio, as well as an enclosed courtyard at the back where you can pile your surf and beach gear when you come back from the shore.

This is a brilliant place for a seaside holiday with two beaches within 200 yards, where you can launch boats and kayaks and play with the toys and beach games which are thoughtfully provided at the house.

Venture further and you can easily find a different and lovely beach for every day of the week if the mood takes you.

Salcombe is a fashionable and nautical little town which is great for interesting shops and eateries and you can walk there along the cliff top via Bolt Head.

Maybe tee off for a round of golf on scenic courses at Bigbury or Thurlestone.

Or why not simply relax, enjoy the beautiful thatched cottages and shoreline and forget your worries for a while?

4 Coastguards Cottage is a smashing base for all the family to find something to amuse them.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
