Our only gripe was we couldn’t get the bbq to work and if there were any instructions, we couldn’t find them. Property would also benefit with getting a dust pan and brush.

  • "Initially, a problem with the heating not working."

Fortunately resolved next day, glad we has brought logs with us for a very chilly first evening. Great location to watch Storm Nelson, very pleasant 10 minute walk to pubs and shop along the coast path. A separate room where we could feed/dry dogs was very useful. 3 good sized bedrooms but very disappointed with the ensuite bedroom - very small and cramped and the only one with no sea view. We had thought this room would be the best. Please could you place a mirror near an electric socket for hairdryer etc in bedrooms. Random assortment of lids for saucepans, few of which fitted the pans!

Rusted radiator main bathroom No logs or starter pack ..your assistant offered to deliver but they didn't arrive which is poor. Nowhere in village to purchase, recommended shop miles away. House had general tired look..not plush, smart enough for the price. Not £400 per day, lack of care and attention. Standard of cleaning and maintenance is not high. Lighting poor. Wardrobe full of towels unable to use fully. Whole downstairs area is draughty in winter..no doors to close. View to downstairs bathroom no privacy. Unable to close doors to downstairs to keep dog in one area when wet. Boot room needs a sink to make it fully useable. Stairs unsafe at the turn at the top..would not recommend for a toddler/elderly person.Hit head on the ceiling as came downstairs. Immediately needs some improvements and general upkeep. No fresh milk left in inadequate welcome pack. Probably won't plan to book with Sykes again as your quality standard is poor.

Well who needs a television! Perfect for the children and dogs. It has everything you might need for a week stay. Only one point that could have made it easier for the week would have been some sharp kitchen knives.

  • "We have had a wonderful weeks stay at May Cottage!"

The position of this property is amazing and so close to the beach, where we saw wild seals daily which was definitely a highlight! And great walks on your doorstep. However the property itself is definitely in need of some attention, its tired and in need of a deep clean! The blinds are broken, and windows are difficult to open. The carpets are really grubby and the walls are in need of a coat of paint. The shower door downstairs also kept falling off. But the most disappointing thing of all was the garden, its overgrown and full of weeds and looks completely unsightly! Dont think it would take much to tidy this up, but from reading previous comments it seems to have been like this for some time! Its a complete lack of care and very disappointing

  • "An extremely good value for money holiday cottage, although beginning to show some need for general attention."

Our dog companions were somewhat disappointed by the state of the courtyard garden, with the rear non patio section over grown with weeds and nettles. Parking is not easy, if you have a car larger than a golf size car, and we needed to park on the road outside the cottage, which is limited due to the use by locals dropping infants to the local nursery and those looking to avoid paying the car park fees. Whilst we ate out most days at the excellent Hope and Anchor, we struggled when trying to use the electric main oven as its thermostat has stopped working, meaning it is fully on or off with no in between. Generally, however, the kitchen equipment supplied is sufficient, if a little dated. But these minor issues can not take away the many positives of staying at May Cottage. Its location only yards from the beach and easy access to the village (although up a good incline). The interior makes for a comfortable stay. Overall we would recommend a stay here, and may well book again.

  • "We had a wonderful week in beautiful May Cottage."

The house was clean and well equipt with everything you could wish for. The outside space was safe for the dogs and a great suntrap for alfresco dining which we managed every day due to the perfect weather! The bedrooms were all large with really comfortable beds. The front bedrooms also had spectacular views of the sea. The lounge had ample seating for our family and there are plenty of bathrooms so no need for queues in the mornings. We had a perfect week and will definitely be back next year. The only criticism is the lack of a gate at the front of the house, we did manage to borrow a pallet from next door to keep the dogs safe as it only takes a second to get from the front door to the road. It didn't spoil our stay but could be a worry for families with young children.

  • "We did try to use the hoover but it was fairly ineffective."

Cleaning up during the stay and at the end would be easier if there was some cleaning equipment and products. Time does tend to standstill when we are there, if the clocks had working batteries in them time might seem to go faster! It will be a relief when the neighbour actually finishes his garden project as the jcb does not make for easy conversation when enjoying what sunshine there was in the garden. Yet again had a thoroughly enjoyable time at May Cottage, and will be looking forward to our next visit.

Also lots of hot water which is a big plus with two families. Ample pots, pans and cutlery etc, again ideal for two families. Excellent position to access beaches and amenities. It was superficially clean but in my opinion would benefit from a deep clean. Some maintenance required on window fastenings and door handles on downstairs toilet and back door handle. We would stay here again if we were coming back to the area.

Unfortunately, it was not as clean as expected or as we have experienced in previous years. All crockery and glassware required rewashing, cottage smelt of stale food, bin was full and smelling and BBQ was not working until all the grease had been removed from the gas jets (but clean no works after a bit of elbow grease!). Bed in rear double not ensuite not comfortable. Garden a great sun trap but requires weeding and tidying up as really not to the standard one would expect for the price. Could have been fantastic but fell short. We did discuss issues with Coast and Country who added in two cleans to help resolve some of the issues.

  • "We stayed in May Cottage in 2020 , thoroughly enjoying the location."

Sadly there has been no investment in the property over the past year. The upstairs blinds are badly soiled and need cleaning. The family shower head is too big for the attachment and has a tendency to spray everywhere when turned on full. Underneath the beds need to be cleaned as there was residue dust and articles visible. This was apparent when looking for something which had been misplaced. As it is a house accommodating 8 it needs a larger fridge. The oven needs replacing as it does not work efficiently. Down each side needs a good clean as there is a collection of food detritus. A suggestion - move the washing machine to the back room and install a tumble drier. As it is a property which allows pets please ensure sofas are cleaned appropriately as the far sofa smelt of animals as it did in 2020 requiring a deep clean when in situ. At a cost of @£3200 per week and an increase of @ for 2022 more is needed. We would not hesitate to recommend the location but feel the rental price is now excessive for what the property provides.

  • "Having stayed at this beautiful cottage before we were disappointed."

The cottage seemed tired- broken blinds, chipped paint, holes in the towels. It is an amazing cottage, in a beautiful location, but it needs a bit of TLC as we noticed such a difference since our last visit (two years ago). The cottage needs a lick of paint and the garden needs sorting. It didn’t have the same luxury feel that we have felt here before. We had called coast and country in advance to see if we could have a travel cot put in the house, they called back to say no, however when we arrived there was one in the utility room. May Cottage is in such a fantastic location, with beautiful views of Hope Cove and is such a fantastic space. I hope that it gets the attention it deserves to bring it back to a lovely holiday home.

Unfortunately, once inside we found the kitchen was not very clean. Work surfaces, crockery and cutlery were dirty. The fridge also had bits of lettuce stuck to the back of the fridge and something spilt inside the door. Had to spend the first couple of hours of our holiday making everything clean. Loaded the dishwasher with cutlery and crockery but once finished found black bits all over the contents and inside the dishwasher door. (Note left for cleaner, but she arrived a few minutes before we left so Hubby spoke to her). We also found the courtyard garden was full of weeds spoiling what could have been a nice space. The rest of the house was spacious with comfortable beds and a powerful en-suite shower. For a 4 star property we were a little disappointed.

  • "We stayed at May cottage with our two elderly parents and it was a perfect location, being so close to the sea and so easy to carry chairs and cups of tea down to the jetty."

Walking up onto Bolberry Down and swimming in the clear lovely sea most days was a delight and hard to leave at the end of the week. It’s set in a perfect location. The cottage was beautifully decorated, sparklingly clean and the beds, sofas etc super comfy. The bedding/towels were very luxurious and hotel quality. The kitchen was well equipped though we were surprised to have to go out and buy bin bags, salt & pepper, washing up liquid, hand soap, toilet rolls, anti-bac and dishwasher tabs. A couple of small suggestions would be to have a gate to stop dogs (and small children) running into the road as you’re getting out of the front door, and a couple of discreet grab rails - my father was too unsteady to use the shower as there was nothing to hold onto. We used the courtyard a lot for meals and would have liked not to have to clear it of dog poo first / and it could have been a bit tidier though I know it’s hard to keep on top of a Holiday cottage garden. We used our own beach parasol as there was no shade over the table. This might be outside of your control but the guests in the cottage next door were a large young group partying till at least 2am every night and we could hear every word - loud laughter/singing/generally ‘having a good time’ - even a cough or sneeze echoed straight in through the bedroom windows on that side (maybe reflected off the walls). So not much sleep (they were quiet one night after we asked them). Despite that we really loved our holiday and were blessed with the best possible hot weather. The info from Coast and Country was good but I wasn’t at all impressed we had to pay £200 extra to move our booking due to covid - and there was no option to cancel and have a refund. (I have cottages myself and have given full refunds throughout).

The house and the location are even better than we expected, and the photos on the website don't really do it justice. Everything in the house - decoration, furniture, equipment, utensils, etc. is of the highest quality. The house has been furnished and equipped as a family home, not just as a holiday let. The downstairs is open plan - bright, airy and a perfect mix of contemporary style and tradition. The bedrooms are all spacious and comfortable - the view from the king-size bed in the main bedroom out the window to the sea is particularly memorable. The patio is private and enclosed, with sunshine all day, plenty of seating (table & chairs - no recliners) and a gas BBQ. The location of the house is perfect - it is on the edge of the village in Inner Hope, so very quiet while still only a couple of minutes walk to the centre of the village. We could walk 30m down the road to walk on the beach (when the tide is out) or sit on the sea wall with a glass of wine and watch the amazing sunsets. The house is also only 30m from steps up to the coastal path, and within 5 minutes you are on the cliffs overlooking the cove with miles of footpaths over the cliffs to explore at your leisure. All in all, it is a fantastic house and location - we all loved it, and were very reluctant to leave it and return to the real world.

Only one thing, it could do with a tumble dryer at the property, with 10 people and the weather not too good, the back room looked more like a laundry room for most of the week, as we could not use the outside drying line (too wet) House in perfect position, virtually on the beach. Grandchildren loved it. Very safe beach for chidren.

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
