  • "A really lovely cottage in a perfect position for great walking, super pubs and some of the best country side in the UK."

  • "This was our second visit to New Cottage this year having had a glorious time there in June."

Despite the change in season the cottage was just as lovely and welcoming, and we're already checking our diaries to book a short break in the spring. It's definitely our happy place!

The only thing was the double bed, not very comfortable for us but that is personal preference.

  • "A very enjoyable stay, and an excellent, well equipped clean cottage, and ideal location so close to the beach, and coastal paths."

Devon in Winter is always going to be windy, but we did find the house a bit noisy on some nights as the wind rattled through any crevices it could find in the roof space and ventilation areas, but this was a niggle and didn't ruin our holiday, the Winter storms are to be expected. The wi fi worked well, but phone reception as we expected is impossible unless you climb a hill nearby. Overall we found it a great premises, and the only issues were external factors beyond the control of the property owners.

  • "A very enjoyable holiday in New Cottage."

I agree with previous reviews which mention the throws on the sofa smelling quite fusty. Also, although the kitchen and bathroom were clean, the whole cottage was very dusty. A larger fridge freezer would be a welcome bonus. Sadly, the previous occupants had not put the dustbin out for collection, so it was full to the brim with very smelly waste. Maybe put a larger notice in the kitchen reminding people about the collection date. Thankfully Coast and Country sent a man with a van to remove the pungent dustbin contents. Lucky old him !

We really enjoyed our stay and would love to return. It was all good , the location was fantastic much better than we anticipated. Our car is fully electric ( the way forward) it does tell you of charging points but not the details of the charge, slow or fast which does have an impact when you are on holiday. Some local details on this would have been welcome.

  • "The cottage was great!"

Warm, quiet and spotlessly clean. The modern kitchen was good but could do with a larger freezer/fridge and some cushion pads for the wooden chairs. Better lighting for us older people in the lounge would help too! The Wi-fi worked efficiently and the bed was comfortable. Lovely hot water in a modern bathroom. To be able to just see the sea from the bedroom window was a surprising extra and the cottage is well placed for the beach and harbour, the pub and eateries, as well as the coastal path. Such a peaceful and enjoyable break and we were so lucky with the weather.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We were really pleased to read that you found the cottage comfortable for your stay. Thank you for your suggestions regarding the fridge and cushions, we have passed these on to the owners. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. • "Cottage was spotlessly clean with a modern, bright and light bedroom, kitchen and bathroom."

However the lounge was a complete contrast and needed updating. The throws on the settee and chairs ruined the whole appearance of the room. Excellent location with plenty of walking nearby. Parking was a real bonus.

  • "What a lovely find."

A very nice cottage with all the facilities we needed. A short walk to the sea and bars and restaurants nearby. Unfortunately three of the bars close on a Tuesday and Wednesday at this time of year and the Hope Cove House hotel seemed reluctant to want to serve non residents or people that had not booked a table in their small restaurant. The cottage is nice and cosy with off street parking, a well laid out kitchen with all appliances. Good sized bathroom with bath and shower over it. The double bedroom has a nice king sized bed and the other bedroom has two large bunk beds.

  • "Lovely cottage, more spacious than the photos suggest and amazing location so close to the beach, slipway for launching paddle boards etc and the SW coast path."

Really clean and kitchen was well equipped. As others have mentioned, my one suggestion would just be to replace the throw on the sofa! Our kids kept getting tangled in the multiple layers currently on there at the moment which look a bit tired! But overall we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend New Cottage!

  • "Upstairs bedrooms & bathroom were clean and fresh The lounge could do with a new and slightly larger sofa."

The throws used to cover the thread bear upholstery were a little musky and not comfortable to sit on. The kitchen is very well equipped. However I did find a broken glass and a very dirty grill pan. Although this is the responsibility of the cleaning services. It did make me doubt how thoroughly cleaned everything else was. Good parking and Excellent location you almost feel the sea waves!

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay. We’re so glad that you enjoyed the cottage and the superb location it offers. With regards to the sofa, it is well-suited for the space available, and along with the armchairs offers ample seating. We haven’t received other negative comments about the comfort of the sofa, which we find can be subjective, but we will monitor this going forward. There is a large throw, underneath the top covers, that protects the sofa; this along with other covers are dry cleaned or washed regularly. Thank you again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back to the area soon. Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful stay in New Cottage (2 adults, 2 children)."

I've been a regular visitor to Hope Cove for many years and it was wonderful to be able to take the children down there now that they're an age to be able to appreciate it. The position is outstanding for us as we love being on the beach or going for a wander on the cliffs. There was plenty of room for the car with additional space for the kayak. The property appears to have been renovated recently and all of the rooms were clean and in good order. The outside area is a fantastic suntrap - it's not clear from the pictures but it was a great place to warm up after a dip in the sea. An outside tap would be really useful to wash sand and salt out of everything after a day on the beach - there might have been one that I missed. Another bonus was WiFi - wasn't sure what to expect as it was unclear from the property listing/email confirmation. I had no phone reception so internet was essential to (grudgingly) keep in touch with the outside world. Speed was fast and connection was easy. Very well equipped kitchen with induction hob (great when we'd worked out how to use it :-) ). Some dishwasher tablets were also provided which was a nice touch. We hope to be back again soon - thank you.

The itinerary states towels not provided and no Wi-Fi. Towels were provided and the cottage has Wi-Fi. We are in our mid sixties and this cottage was not our first choice primarily because it was advertised as no Wi-Fi and a previous review said there was no mobile phone signal. I believe it is essential that Wi-Fi is advertised as a facility.

  • "Comfortable and warm cottage."

Very comfortable bed. It was lovely to see the sea with duel aspect both upstairs and down. One small irritation was the previous people using the cottage had broken the cruet set. However I was aware that you would have a representative to check the cottage when we left so you may wish to discuss this with your representative. Having said this though we would return given the wonderful vista

Clean, comfy and well equipped, with everything you would need for a lovely holiday. We particularly like the suntrap garden, which is great if you fancy a bit of sun somewhere other than the beach ! Being so near to the sea, its wonderful to watch the stormy waves crashing against the seawall and going to sleep to the sound of the sea on pebbles.

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
