  • "We have stayed at the Look Out quite a few times over the years."

It is comfortable and cozy, amazing views, and we really like it. However, there were a lot of cracks in the plaster, the main bathroom floor felt very unstable, missing coat hooks and we generally felt the house needed a lot of TLC. The carpets could do with being cleaned or changed and certainly a whole paint job with lighter colours. Curtain rails replaced in the lounge. But it is certainly somewhere we would return to. Our thanks to Coast and Country for the rapid removal of a dead rabbit in the garden and lesson in how to flush the loo. Who knew there was more than one way!!

  • "We had a fantastic holiday in your comfortable homely spacious bungalow."

We were warm enough; the beds were comfy and we enjoyed the terrace in the sunshine. Very well appointed with no passing traffic. The kitchen is superbly equipped and we appreciated the jigsaws etc. Yes, certain areas are a little dated but the positives far outweigh the negatives. I would like to point out that the bungalow is mainly user friendly for older guests with mobility problems, 5 steps up at the front and one interior step, however, our less mobile guests were not able to walk to the village or beach as it is up a hill and too far- and parking is tricky down there- so only a stones throw for most people but out of bounds for anyone with mobility issues, unless you drive down. Apart from this minor point we had a thoroughly enjoyable relaxing time - thank you so much.

  • "We have stayed at The Look Out several times over many years and are likely to stay again in the future."

However some maintenance is required; the light associated with the ensuite bathroom cabinet has not worked for over two years, the radiator in the dining area hammers loudly at a certain temperature and has done so for at least five years, the outside light at the front of the property no longer works, two years ago some of the windows in the lounge leaked when it rained - fortunately it didn't rain during our recent visit so I cannot confirm if this is still a problem although I suspect it will be if no rectification work to the windows has been done in the meantime. The curtain rail on one of the front windows in the lounge is not secure at one end. Also I marked down on cleanliness because when we moved the chairs in the lounge just a few inches a lot of crumbs and dust was revealed, also when we were looking for pyrex dishes in the kitchen for doing cooking they had not been cleaned very well. All minor points really but a slight detraction from this wonderful property.

  • "The property while well equipped and located is showing its age and in need of refurbishment."

This is particularly true of the bathrooms. The loo seat in the master bedroom ensuite was broken when we arrived and not replaced until four days into our stay. The family bathroom is in a very poor state. There is a lot of give in the floor underneath the vinyl flooring which suggests some structural issues. My guess is this is probably caused by the shower (not used) leaking. Fixtures and fittings are outdated and need to be replaced. The kitchen and living room were fine. Property also not as clean as we would have hoped on arrival (cobwebs and kitchen surfaces dusty).

Lovely location, very spacious for family of 5 including toddler , lovely welcome & cleaning pack on arrival . On reading past reviews did notice the little jobs people mentioned , the leaky window and faulty tap still hasn't been addressed and sorted . Bit more cleaning stuff would have been appreciated i,e bleach etc for.sink & toilets .but over all lovely property for a family break , would book again .

  • "A little disappointed with the general condition of the property."

Some of the plaster is falling off the walls. The floor in the main family bathroom is about to fall through. There is a water leak in the ensuite bathroom that has damaged the wall through to the family bathroom. The main hallway has damaged walls that require attention. the middle bedroom plaster work is starting the fail. In a general terms the property is tired.

  • "The bungalow was very spacious and the location was ideal."

Beautiful views from the balcony etc. It was well equipped for our needs with washing machine, dishwasher and generous fridge. However, we thought the bungalow interior was very tired looking and could have benefitted from redecorating. The bathrooms especially looked very old. As a family of 4 we were running out of hot water in the morning and had to stagger our showers, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. Considering the coastal location and price we paid maybe install solar panels. When we cleaned through the day before we found items under the sofa, under the cushions etc which meant the cleaners weren't doing a thorough clean! Also when we stripped the bed sheets the mattress covers were stained which was not a great sight. Not sure if the owners live nearby to check the property regularly? It's just worth noting so they can contact the cleaners.

  • "The cold tap in the bath in the ensuite is very stiff and difficult to turn off."

The second bedroom floor is quite well polished and two of the rugs are very slippery, if a child slid on one it would not have a happy outcome. Perhaps some non-skid tape to anchor the rugs? As always it is a lovely bungalow, but is looking a bit tired now...a coat of paint throughout would do wonders.

  • "Only slight gripe is that I was asked if I would like a hamper and Christmas decorations."

The hamper was lovely, but no decorations. The house has a few leaks at the windows (it did rain heavily on a few days) but otherwise is lively and cosy, well located and spacious. Will definitely be back!

  • "The bed I used (single in the twin room) was not great."

On the other hand the new bed in the en suite room was declared to be extremely comfortable by my heavily pregnant daughter. The kitchen is really well equipped for family self catering and the large dining area adjacent to the kitchen was really handy. Big comfortable furniture and little seating corners to retreat to in the living room were very good for a multigenerational holiday. Unfortunately we did not get to use the balcony due to weather being either very wet or too windy but that would have been lovely. Three bathrooms were a boon as we all take morning showers so there were no queues. I agree with other reviewers that areas of the property look a little dated but it is very comfortable and spacious, we never felt crowded by one another. Lovely garden and a lovely view at present. The beach is five minutes walk away from the house and harbour beach about 10 minutes walk so it was easy to return to the house for any reason. The key safe is ideal if you’re planning on separate trips as no one needs to get locked out. There are a few interesting artworks and some tasteful touches. I would definitely bring my family back to this property. No supermarket here, nearest we found was in Marlborough a few miles away which has a coop with limited parking and fuel. Nearby is a post office and public loos. Village shop in Cove. We went to Salcombe which was heaving with cars and people so we decided instead to go to Kingsbridge, a market town with plenty of independent shops. The only meal out we had was at The Crabshell just outside Kingsbridge next to the estuary. Plenty of outdoor seating and a varied menu with options for children, and dog friendly. Everyone enjoyed the food.

  • "We were VERY impressed by the well equipped property - down to a garlic press ( I always bring my own as most don't provide !"

) Location go a BIG tick too & the building work in front wasn't a problem at the stage it is / was at. As the owners of a previous rental accommodation business - over 20 years of experience - in South Africa however we would draw your attention to maintenance issues - whoever is responsible for them ?! - 1) "Blown" light bulbs not replaced - main bedroom centre light, table lamp in lounge, utiltity area, one down lighter in the lounge. 2) Sagging lounge curtains as a direct result of broken curtain hooks & / or rollers - west facing probably sun damage over the years 3) NO heating thermostat could be found to correct too much heat in addition to conflicting advice on the control about "tripping" the system. Tall radiatior in the dining area had an airlock / water hammer that needs releasing - perhaps they have been "fiddled with" ? 4) No ice trays but accept this is probably a Covid issue 5) Bath / shower mats would have been helpful 6) Corner bath cold tap needs attention - extremely difficult to turn off - required a spanner ! 7) We finally found the washing rotating line / pole folded up in the garden - not exactly obvious 8) Depending on the personal phone network we had NO internet contact for our network so NO phone as obviously the "house" phone is only for emergencies and we had no intention of abusing it - we feel this information would be helpful for future guests that they may not be able to access networks unless they chose to drive out of Hope Cove "uphill" to receive a signal - BUT good WiFi ! These are NOT intended as negative comments - rather constructive ones to help the owners which we hope will be passed on. Kind regards Alison Ayre

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time at The Look Out and found it so well equipped. Thank you for taking the time to advise us of the maintenance issues, we will look into all these points in the coming weeks. We hope that we will see you again in Hope Cove. Property Owner

(We had to request these from your local office) The garage full of rubbish. Garden and pathways not very well maintained. No barbecue provided. En suite bathroom - Mildew around tiles in shower cubical Middle bathroom - Shower hose badly split and leaking.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We have passed your comments onto the cleaner and the owner in order to get them rectified. • "Our holiday was lovely."

Despite the weather the large sitting room with 3 vistas from the windows provided tremendous relaxation when we could not venture outside. The only spoiling feature was your failure to provide basic information on how to operate the equipment. Also we felt your attitude to the heating was poor. Even in early winter in October people do need to have the heating on from time to time. This is NOT a complaint - it is merely pointing out the obvious. Regards Andrew and Sheila Cole

We've always felt that your company was truly excellent, this year it felt a bit average. Also confused as to whether you're still Coast and Country or have been taken over by Sykes Cottages and whether Coast and Country is now just a brand of this bigger company, hence the changes we noticed ?

Thank you for your recent feedback and please accept our apologies that you felt the property was not cleaned up to standard, we work hard with our cleaners and owners to maintain our very high standards and your feedback has been passed on to the relevant department. For your future reference, please let us know upon your arrival if you are unhappy with any aspect of the property. There have been some changes made since we merged with Sykes but we are still the bespoke Coast and Country Cottages and will continue to maintain our excellent customer service as always, we look forward to welcoming you back to Devon. • ""The Look Out" is in a perfect location for those of us who enjoy walking the coastal path and/or going to the beach, both of which are just a short walk from the house."

It is very spacious with the bonus of having 3 bathrooms, ample parking and a large garden area, ideal for us as 2 grandparents travelling with our daughter, son-in-law and 2 grandsons (aged 5 & 2). The house is very well equipped throughout. Our only complaint is the beds, which were very uncomfortable; the mattresses on all must be of a poor quality as they were very soft and dipped badly in the middle. The children didn't mind but all of the adults suffered from lack of sleep (which was nothing to do with the children!) :) One other very minor negative, was that although a very handy barbecue grill is provided, no barbecue tools are supplied.

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
