  • "I stayed in this lovely cottage for several weeks whilst between houses, after an earlier visit in the year when on holiday."

The cottage was ideal and everything that I needed for the duration was already there; I lacked for nothing and the welcome gifts were great. The owners are really lovely people and were very helpful and kind, even taking in my mail, concerning my house purchase, from solicitors, and providing a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Exeter, 4 miles away, could be seen across open rolling countryside, with sheep in the fields, and it would have been lovely to sit outside with a drink to relax and absorb the relaxing atmosphere but, sadly, the weather and temperature in December was not conducive to it! I can heartily recommend Ash Cottage, set in the countryside but convenient for Exeter and the rest of Devon. I shall certainly be back!

Thankyou for your lovely comments,we were so pleased to have you staying at Ashcottage. We hope you have settled well into your new abode and wish you luck and happiness.Hopefully see you again one day.x Property Owner

Appreciated the tasty welcoming treats and the books and games provided. Comfortable beds but the open plan mezzanine bedroom meant it was a bit noisy as we all had different bedtimes! Unfortunately we couldn’t make use of the outside space due to the weather but was a lovely peaceful area.

  • "We had a lovely break the views from Ash cottage are wonderful and it is well situated enabling us to explore both Dartmoor and Exeter and the surrounding areas although a car is required."

Ash cottage is very well equipped however the fridge freezer might be a little small for four. Although the cottage sleeps four the mezzanine level is only suitable for young children as we were unable to stand upright upstairs, as there were only two of us this didn’t bother us. Ash cottage has good WiFi and tv and a nice little seated area. We felt that for us the toilet is low and the mattress lumpy but this might be fine for others.

Thankyou very much for your feedback,we are glad you had a lovely holiday. Property Owner

  • "Loved the welcome goodies, nice touch, thank you."

Plenty of kitchen items available that we did not expect like teapot, coffee cafetiere, tea towels, washing up liquid, shopping bag, ice trays, etc. Brilliantly well stocked. Shower is one of the best we've come across in rented cottages. Lovely! Double bed mattress a bit bumpy and could do with replacing, and the bed frame was propped up underneath with stool and bricks. Good to replace with King size bed. Upstairs bedroom head height only about 5'10" in the middle of slanting room so not ideal for tall/large people upstairs. Overall a comfortable cottage with lovely views over fields and a great base for exploring Devon.

Thankyou for your feedback,so sorry about the bed we cant fit a kingsize in with comfort to get around. There is a very thick topper on the bed it probably needs to be shaken we will look into it,also the bed base is slated so the stool under supports if needed. We hope you had a lovely holiday. It was great to have a smart tv and to have a good internet connection. These are often lacking in a holiday cottage. It is well equipped with everything you would need for a self catering holiday. It is also spotlessly clean. The weather was very good which enabled me to go out every day to lots of wonderful beaches and places to visit. I only had one thing I felt would have made the stay 100% It would have helped to have a grab rail in the bathroom next to the toilet. The toilet is very low down and as someone who has problems with their hips, it would have made life a bit easier. Other than that, I would recommend Ash Cottage to stay in.

The cottage was in a good location and only a couple of miles from the nearest Sainsbury's. There was a lot to see and do around the area. We particularly enjoyed visiting Killerton House (National Trust) and the towns of Exmouth and Newton Abbott. It was just like the pictures on sykes. The owners had left us 4 pints of milk some t bags and nice biscuits. Thanks. We had a lovely stay there. Had all the home comforts and we were able to use it as a good base for sightseeing. We were in exeter when the tour of britain cycling race came in. We visited a couple of beaches around the area. Went to killerton a national trust place. Worth a visit. We ate at the twisted oak on our last night. Meal was nice we shouldve eaten there more but the facilities in the cottage were good we cooked for ourselves quite a bit. The Alphington sainsburys was good to stock up on our food. In Exeter we parked in the quay which is free after 6. Loved the Quay.

We felt that the directions to the cottage could be more comprehensive e.g by saying estimated distances before turning etc. On our day of arrival we tried to follow the instructions and went wrong twice and then trying to correct ourselves on the narrow roads was not easy. Very small points but the first bread knife that we used wouldn't have cut anything but then found another one tucked away in the drawer which was far better. Also tried to use another, what we thought was a sharp knife, to get into a pre-packed piece of cheese without any luck. Very comfortable and relaxing stay with no issues apart from the small points above. We would stay here again.

A footpath at the bottom of the garden and a within a hundred metres or so there are more stunning views in the opposite direction to the south west and towards the sea. There are other footpath walks within a short walk from the house, some through woodland and some over hills. We walked up the lane a little way and down a lane to the left and saw two red deer one evening. A reasonably short distance from Exeter and also lots more exciting places to visit. In the other direction 10 - 20 minutes drive took us onto Dartmoor. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. There is normally a lot of wildlife to see in the field opposite but this had just been cut for hay and we didn't see much. An idea would be to have a map of the footpaths in the cottage.

It didn't bother my wife ... she made me drive. :-) The mezzanine bedroom is a curious 'room'. The two single beds are under the eaves and unless you're the size of a twelve years old you're going to be banging your head a lot. If you ARE a child then the bed's OK but the stairs might prove a problem especially for toddlers. Overall the accommodation is first class and well equipped for holiday needs. The wi-fi was adequate and fast enough to stream Netflix (not provided - it's not a Smart TV); and my wife managed to upload over a 1000 photos and videos to Facebook without a hitch. ;-) Finally. We were woken most mornings at around 5am to 5:30am of our 14 night stay when a large black bird kept crashing into the kitchen windows! This may or may not be a regular feature.

About the location

EXETER

Shillingford Abbot 2.4 miles; Exminster 4 miles; Topsham 4.4 miles.

Exeter is a lively city in south Devon with a magnificent cathedral, historic quayside area with artisan shops and cafes, guided tours of the maze of underground passages and a wealth of bars, shops and restaurants. There is a good choice of excellent museums tracing the city’s lengthy history including an interesting medieval building The Tucker’s Hall, built for the Company of Weavers, Tuckers and Shearman which houses exceptional carved panelling, rare silver and a 4 feet long pair of fulling shears. Nearby Parliament Street claims to be the world’s narrowest street – less than 25 inches at its narrowest. The gatehouse and tower of Rougemont castle still stand in the city, surrounded by Rougemont gardens with a backdrop of Roman wall ruins - a tranquil haven. Exeter’s one time importance as a port is reflected in the Custom House, now the centrepiece of the Quayside, a fascinating complex of antique shops and cafes. Within a 15 minute drive of the city, there are some fabulous beaches at Sidmouth and Exmouth, and the start of the 95 mile stretch of Jurassic Coast, all of which provide ample opportunities for relaxation, sport and exploration. Exeter is an ideal south Devon base from which to explore pretty countryside and Heritage Coast.
